Great stuff. There always seems to be some magic to pre-internet trip reports or videos. Trips like this in 2024 are still impressive, but 30 years ago was a whole different ball game.

All these vintage videos need to be viewed by more people, today’s paddlers would benefit from these trips prior to a time when people made KZbin videos of the same canoe trips. It sure would’ve been nice to have some drones filming along the way, but they didn’t have them back in those days. These paddlers built up some seriously great memories.❤

Thanks for sharing Al. I had forgotten that we shared the train ride with you till I saw my cameo while helping load canoes.

In the modern you-tube era, I've seen a bunch of trips in which certain aspects of the trip were designed specifically for youtube purposes. That hasn't to my knowledge yet included deliberately choosing a kevlar boat, let alone a 30 lb ultra-light. I have a 30 lb solo canoe myself, and it's not going to survive one single hit in rapids like that. I can see how the soloist could have paddled out in one of the tandems if the canoe was damaged late in the trip, but there's too much gear to do that in the early stretch along the dePas.

How did he film the scenes where there are four of you paddling on the river together?

There were 5 of us. 2 tandem canoes and one solo canoe. Dick, who did almost all the filming, had the solo boat. Sometimes one of us used his camera to film Dick.

July/August. Most ponds and lakes & streams still frozen in June.
