Please forgive the question if you have already answered. What are the disadvantages of the various Wholetone / Von Janko keyboard layouts?
@JLMoriart5 ай бұрын
Janko layouts don't differentiate between enharmonic equivalents. This is an advantage in one sense, since you can choose which "version" of a note to hit depending on which one is most comfortable for the finger you want to use. But it's a disadvantage for me, since I'm into microtonal music and things like that, where the enharmonic equivalents can have different pitches, and so need to be differentiated between. (When put over a standard keyboard, those different notes on the overlay still trigger the same underlying key, but hypothetically an instrument could be built that differentiates between them.)
@tech-utuber22195 ай бұрын
@@JLMoriart Microtonal music layout does have that disadvantage for Janko keyboards. Thank you for your response.

So I assume you are manually designing these now instead of using a program like before?
@JLMoriart5 ай бұрын
That's right. It's still parametric, so you can change the values of various measurements to fit different underlying keyboards or to change some parts of the design, but it's not near as versatile as what I built with Java+OpenSCAD.

xD It's probably worth pointing out that the OnShape design doesn't have the same modularity as the openSCAD+java design did. But being able to click "fillet" and then click an edge is magical, and easily worth the tradeoff.

I’d like to see the Chopin Etude in 3rds on this. Is it even possible? How do you play chromatic thirds in one hand?
@JLMoriart9 ай бұрын
I'm guessing it's possible, but I'm not really a janko guy so I can't say for sure. There are some things (like pentatonic/diatonic glissandi) that are definitely impossible to replicate from traditional keyboard layouts, but I'm often pleasantly surprised how well experience with a traditional keyboard translates to isomorphic keyboards.
@danielgloverpiano76939 ай бұрын
@@JLMoriart thanks, John. I’m probably too set in my ways to learn something so radically different. I admire you that you can be adaptable and make it work. It took me the longest time just to get used to a page turn device for my iPad, but it’s second nature now and I use my knee instead of the foot. It’s attached to the underside of the keyboard. My own invention. That way I can use my feet on three pedals and not sacrifice them to turn pages.

Thanks for telling us about this plugin. However, I’m thinking this would not comprehend half-accidentals? That is, for example, in 31TET, I _think_ I’d have to write a C-neutral triad as C-Dx-G, or C-Fbb-G, rather than C-Ed-G, true?
@JLMoriart Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's correct. To me, that's a good thing, because I don't want to add more accidentals. You can reach all the notes in 31 using a chain of fifths, which allows you to notate all notes using standard notation. And if I'm using diatonic/chromatic/super-chromatic "structures" melodically, those spellings carry more "meaning" in the context of those scales. But if you want to think in terms of half accidentals, it is of course a bad thing =P I think there are other plugins that implement/recognize new accidentals though?
@mr88cet Жыл бұрын
@@JLMoriart, thanks for verifying that. I certainly don’t (yet at least), know whether there are plugins that recognize half-accidentals. I presume Musescore has half-accidental symbols? I probably would use Dorico instead if I can’t. In my view, triads are, by definition, written in thirds. C-Dx is a double-augmented second and C-Fbb is a double-diminished fourth. There’s no obvious reason to comprehend either as neutral thirds.
@JLMoriart Жыл бұрын
@@mr88cet Start looking here maybe? It's been a while. musescore.org/en/project/accidental-tuner Triads are defined by thirds, but whether chords necessarily have to be "triadic" is another question ;-)

Interesting to compare the different tunings of the sample piece: 12EDO: Not too bad, except that one of the intervals that appears fairly early sounds WAY wrong. 22EDO: The interval that sounded way wrong in 12EDO sounds a good bit less wrong, at the expense of everything else being a bit out of tune. 34EDO: The sweet spot: The interval that sounded way wrong in 12EDO now sounds almost right, and strangely everything else does as well. 51EDO: Starting to get detuned across the board. 10EDO: Now badly detuned, regardless of using harpsichord sound or funk(?) sound.

It may be a good idea to check the layout of the chromatic button accordion (see Wikipedia). I think you may sell some of these overlays if you would make a layout for it, because players of this accordion system has now to learn the piano keyboard layout. Some of these accordion players use button keyboards, but those button keyboards are old, are not made anymore, and do not sound nice. BTW, it's a two row system (with the possibility of repeating rows), and it goes diagonal C C# D (next 'column') D# E F (next 'column') F# G G# and so on...
@JLMoriart Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! The program is a mess, but someone ambitious could probably implement that using the programs I used to create these designs. See my video "Create your own 3D printable isomorphic keyboard overlays!" Worth noting that large intervals have to be stretched very far left-to-right, so some layouts are hard to keep recognizable as an overlay.

Needless to say, since the time this video was posted, things got even better! 🎹 Nowadays Surge allows editing tuning files within its own UI; Surge team made the tuning code a separate library which other synth creators can use to not check their implementation for weird cases that could be done wrong; more synths now implement MTS-ESP which is useful for synchronizing tunings of several tunings in a single project.

Probably has to do with many microtonal folks focusing more on "texture" and "pushing boundaries" than making something that will appeal to the average music listener. Listen to some serialist composers and you may get a similar vibe. Are you looking for recommendations of microtonal music that doesn't sound like this?
