None of the equipment you have in the sharpening corner draws much current so I would add a surface mount 1900 extention ring witha single flat mud ring mounted on the back attached to the duplex outlet mud ring and install a four gang (2 duplex outlets in the larger surface mounted 1900 box making it easy to plug in all your equipment w/o too big of a job. Yep, not an overly complicated fix but, better planning up front would have been more appropriate. Thanks!

Was nice to see some things you would have done differently! With the idea of another building for lumber storage, would it just be extra long term lumber storage or all lumber storage and you wouldn’t have much lumber stored in your shop? Also, I’m assuming the building won’t be heated or cooled so would the changing conditions of frigid winters and hot Montana summers have any effect on the lumber or is that not an issues as long as there’s not a lot of moisture?
@KevsWoodworks
@KevsWoodworks 26 күн бұрын
Thanks Jeff.. There would still be lumber in the shop but, the racks would be for the current or upcoming projects only. As for the temperatures, it's not really the temperature that affects the lumber, it's the humidity. There will still be an acclimation period as lumber moves into the shop for projects.

Put a pump on the barrel and pump it directly into a dumpster or an enclosed dump trailer. Set it up so that when the dust collector is on the pump is on also.

Just used Fiddes for the first time on an antique restoration project. The aim on this particular project was to "conserve" the look of very old, high patina wood (deep ridges, dips & worn areas from 100+ years of use, and variants in color of the wood) - and Fiddes has left the wood looking healthy, natural & smooth to the touch without being sticky, glossy or plastic-like. It has conserved aged wood in a restorative way without removing the wood's history. My only warning would be that it significantly deepens the wood color. I had hoped not to deepen the color too much, so I was a bit disappointed - however - the wood was very dry, needing the oil, and it still looks amazing. The color is rich & natural. Definitely test an area of wood first before beginning.

Being an oil base, it's going to darken the wood color. Especially on darker woods.
@JHall-jo9rm
@JHall-jo9rm 22 күн бұрын
@@KevsWoodworks I was prepared for that due to previous projects with oil bases - but this is a very light wood - and it's even harder to preserve that raw, light color unless you top coat it with something first (which I couldn't do in this case) or do a wash (water based paint mixture to stain the wood first)... which I didn't want to do either. The project is a Japanese Tansu with Paulownia & Cedar.. it naturally darkens no matter what you put on it - but I just loved the natural look it had after cleaning it. Just couldn't find any product that would have prevented that. I've noticed that Rubio doesn't darken quite as much.. but it was out of my price range.

Can I just use this sled and make my own "XL" fence? I get that I won't have the bigger metal keys, but as a beginner, I just didn't want to make a whole sled from scratch.... PS: I have one coming today that has 3 size keys - 1/2, 3/8, & 1/2. Will likely make a fence for 3/4 & 1".

The honest answer is I'm not completely sure. In theory, you should be able to but, I haven't tried it. I actually ended up giving this one away and going to the Incra IBox which is a much better unit. I would try this change for you if it was still in my shop.

does this help in keeping big sheet good,s like lets say sides for a pantry, right on the fence?
@KevsWoodworks
@KevsWoodworks 2 ай бұрын
Yes, it does help. The wheels are tipped at about 5 degrees to help pull material into the fence. You still need to practice good technique at the saw especially with larger pieces. These help but, don't do the work for you.

Can you briefly explain how you squared up your miter slot to the fence and blade? Is the fence just sitting directly above the blade to line up with the kerf?
@KevsWoodworks
@KevsWoodworks 2 ай бұрын
Absolutely. I actually used calipers to line up the miter slot / fence / and Blade long before this video. They were all squared. I set the fence close to the blade to ensure it was as square as could be to the runners. I simply cut off the excess and then aligned the fence from there. Apologies if I didn't cover that that sufficiently in the video.

Very timely video as I just started to investigate alternatives due to cost. Some of the new alternatives available in US and Europe are not available here unfortunately. Does your cost comparison take into account double coat requirement for Fiddes?
@KevsWoodworks
@KevsWoodworks 3 ай бұрын
This is a great question and I think I covered it in a quarterly review but, just in case... When you add the second coat of Fiddes, you start to build a film and it looks more like a wipe on poly than a hard wax oil. I like the Fiddes much more with only one coat but, the durability isn't there. But, it similar to the others with just one coat and easier to repair. Hope that helps!

Nice improvements. Love seeing the tools tighter together. I do like hand planes on shelves but usually when it’s an overflow cabinet and not for your most used planes in a vertical oroentation. I still really love the saws, measure & marking, and chisels on the outside great choice. My only hand tool snob comments are my preferences. Shooting plane I find too awkward in wall cab and the extra step so I store it with the board under my bench. Then the bigger snob thing is magnets for planes are not for me. I love the short pocket for the heels to sit inside. Deep enough to not allow plane to tip out even if pulled back on purpose. Those things are minor to the work done and usefulness your cabinet will provide.
@KevsWoodworks
@KevsWoodworks 3 ай бұрын
Thanks! I really wanted to do a tilted plane till but, just didn't have the depth for it. This would have kept me away from the magnets. As for the shooting plane, you may be correct and that's an easy fix in the future. Admittedly, I don't use the shooting plane as much as I should.

I've had my set for about 2 years now and they are the single best update to my saw. I use them for nearly every cut and they work perfectly. I even ordered an extra rail so that I can place it, along with the arms, on my router fence when needed. It improves my handling of larger cuts when making either rabbits or custom trim parts. While I have an use the Jessem router stock guides, the extra reach of the table saw stock guides on the router fence comes in handy with larger stock at times. (My router table is a wing extension of the table saw, allowing it to handle large items)

Beautiful shop. How nice to work in. The one thing you had that was most important is your shop dog. No shop should be without one. I have a 6 month old Beagle and she can find things I didn’t even know I had. And if you drop something you have 2 seconds to pick it up before it’s gone lol well it’s 2024 and I’ll bet you have your new lathe. Your granddaughter is very lucky. When my first of 3 sons was born I made an 18 th century reproduction cradle. All solid black walnut. Carved wheat sheafs W on the top front. A family heirloom . Four grandkids started life in there lol. Before too long I suspect a great, great grandkid. Interesting as I was a tool and die maker at the time. Now my garage hobby shop is metal and wood working. Pretty much the same processes. Just different medias. Wishing you much success sir. Enjoyed your video. Hope to make my first shop tour in a few months.

I feel like I won the lottery this morning. I have had the same table and stand for a really long time, and dust collection has always been its Achilles heel. For anything other than something small, I usually roll it outside which is a pain. I was lying awake in bed this morning working through what an enclosure may entail given everything on the underside of the table. I ran a quick search hoping to find that someone had done something sufficiently similar on a more generic table and lift that I could adapt to the undercarriage of the Jessem table/stand. And when I saw the intro to your video, I instantly recognized the setup. I know you thought the video ran long, but for my purposes, thank you for every minute!

@@KevsWoodworks When I was scoping it out last night, I dropped the lift down pretty far before putting a tape on it to see what kind of clearance I needed to allow just in case. I couldn't remember what the measurement was when I watched this morning, but when I heard 13.5" for the drawer, that did sound a smidge higher. I appreciate the heads up.

Liked your magswitch inset for better rigidity under kickback stress. One question though. What jigs would interfere with the Jessem T-track they provide? (assuming the rollers are removed from the track prior to using the jig on the fence ). PS. Nice smooth drone footage on the intro!You’re one of the few flyers that actually doesn’t film himself in the zoom using the clip to imply an aerial transition into the woodshop. You obviously know your tools well.

Simply using a paper bag to wipe a finish after it's cured. Smooths out the surface and removed any dust nibs that may have cured in the finish without damaging the finish.

Amazing shop Kev!!! Layout is perfect!! Your shop is almost a blueprint. Of what I wanted my shop to be. When I first started woodworking in 2020. I built a roubo style WB with the benchcrafted leg vise. Im about to install that HNT Gordon Tailvise into it. Just finished my mitersaw station with a ton of drawers. my first "big" project was my 4x8 torsion box outfeed/assembly table with a lot of drawers. my space is just 20x20 but having a lot of drawers and flat surfaces has done wonders for the size constraints IMO
