I like the Quansheng. I bought 3 for trying different firmware and I bought one with the hardware board already installed. Great little radio for the money. Thnx Jeem. :)

Hi and thank you for your video, how do I add multiple talk groups for the FREEDMR, I already have one tg in the field that I use with my anytone 878 but would like to add many more and don't know how. Can I just add the second, third tg number next to the first with a space in-between?

Lol... I bought the Quansheng UV-K5(8) on Prime Day for the same reason... price($19) and something to play around with, with all the different firmware hacks available. The most common ones are Egzumer and IJV. I discovered a modified version of Egzumer called F4HWN (V3.0) done by F4HWN (Armel), after trying out the other two, I tried Armel's version and I really liked it and that's what's running on mine. I completely agree with your spectral purity assessment, Jim. I'm not going to pass up a pretty decent radio just because 1 harmonic, is just a you-know-what hair above the limits. Thanks for the review!

My go to HT is the RA89. It also technically failed harmonics. Its main selling feature, for me was the IP68 rating. A better and cleaner HT would be nice but the IP rating and cost (I often play in the water and mud). Thanks for your videos and 73, KF0NNQ.

Is it a rebranded Quansheng UV-K5?
@FEPLabsRadio3 күн бұрын
Very probably rebranded, or a very close cousin. The K5 failed basically the same way, by only a few microwatts too much power on the one harmonic it showed.

I feel like an idiot for asking this. Do I need to add static talkgroups for Brandmeister in my WPSD? I can't get my parrot to come back to me but noticed I have no static talkgroups. I have not seen anything about those so I never touched it.
@FEPLabsRadio3 күн бұрын
No sir, don't feel like an idiot! Honestly, I don't understand the difference between static and dynamic TG, other than what the name implies. AFAIK, the static TG linked to your hotspot stay connected. WHY that matters at all, I have no idea. The way I program my radios, when I change TG on the radio, it changes TG on the hotspot. I *think* the static/dynamic is more of a repeater thing, than specifically a radio/hotspot thing.

Right? I mean it's a technical fail, but only barely, and let's face it, 65 uW ain't gonna transmit far. As I mentioned, WiFi sigs are around 25mW by default on most SOHO routers. And that shit don't cover the whole house most of the time! LOL. Now, there are some radios that are realllllly bad, and I've had a few on the channel. That's a whole 'nother story. This thing - well close enough for ham. Thanks for watching!

I much prefer to put 4x the price towards a solid rig from Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu that can easily pass the test with flying colors and give me many years of good operation. You get what you pay for fellas. IMO, it is foolish and shortsighted to mar the optics of the hobby with a cheap transmitter that can't stand up to the FCC rules and regs. Thank you Jim for the testing and shared results. 73 OM

Dude, I don't disagree with you (you're smarter than me), but honestly, a $17 HT that is only 20uW over the threshold.... cost/risk/benefit. In a perfect world, there wouldn't be fake FCC ID's, harmonics, etc. ,and we would all carry D75's as our daily driver. But - as far as cheap Chinese radios go, this ain't all bad. Thanks for watching bud!

They work great for POTA. People always walking into antenna . No matter what color or flag on it. The fix for the lawnmower guy is do your own yard work. Honestly, IMO, not so much. I get the open source part of it, removing proprietary algorithms out of the mix, or specific hardware, but at the end of the day... It's an interesting project, but it needs a lot of commercial backing before it gets adopted widely. The guys working on it are sharp, no doubt about that, and are continually updating things. We'll see where it goes.

Has anyone else noticed a really bad battery life on the 8w version. I realize it has a much better display than the Baofeng UV-5R & UV-82HP, but I keep the back light timer at a minimum and have even tried the deep battery save mode. With little to no TX and very small amounts of RX, the battery drops too quickly. I turned it on the other day and it read 7.8v. Two days later with no use at all it reads 7.2v. My Baofengs under the same conditions last a ridiculously long time. Any ideas?

There is so much confusion on this subject. Back in the 1950s SWR became a "thing" and mushroomed so that today it is the big bad boogeyman waiting to sabotage your radio activities. Radio manufacturers now have built-in power fold back to "protect the finals". As far as I have seen, there are few amateur radio courses teaching the simple fundamentals of feedlines and antennas. Talking about relfected power, what happens to the reflected power as it propagates down the feedline? Reflected power is NOT dissipated as heat in the transmitter! It is reflected once again now in phase with the forward power, and again the majority of the energy is absorbed by the load (antenna). This because there is a matching network at the transmitter, which does not allow reflected power to enter the finals, unlike an audio amp which does not have a matching network. Recommended reads - ARRL Antenna Book and Reflections by Walter Maxwell (free download). With regard to infinite impedance on a transmitter, let's refer to Ohm's Law. In a circuit with infinite impedance, how much power can the generator produce? Answer - zero. What can happen is that high voltages can develop across the transistors which will blow a hole through it. When I taught the courses, I was a little OCD about teaching Ohm's Law and all it's derivatives. If you understand the basic concept of Ohm's Law, everything else becomes fairly straightforward. RF engineers seldom talk about SWR, as it is mainly besides the point. What is important is system losses, feedline losses, efficiency and radiation resistance of the antenna itself.

I first had an Ailunce HD 1 with GPS around 2018, then sold it in 2021. Now I have it again since last year, among other analog-dmr HT's too. It's ok to use, but not great. Thanks very much for the research and revelations about what Chinese Electronics companies do to theirs. I think Ailunce and Retevis are the same companies, among other units like the Radioddity GD88 HT, and the Retevis RT73, 20 watt mobile, which is also the DB-25. The Radioddity and Retevis CPS for both the GD88 and RT73 are the same looking and both didn't work for my attempts for both the HT and mobile. I used the Ham made Code Plug Editor you can download from MM7DBT. Now that I tried the Radioddity GD88 and I am requesting to return it to Radioddity because it appears to be used and had programming already on it from Germany of all places. Now the similar CPS for my Retevis RT-73 doesn't work correctly, letting me program the RT-73, but an error message pops up when trying to save the RT-73 code plug, with the Big Red X WARNING, to quit or try to continue, and a long incomprehensible dialog about the problem follows, even if I delete and reinstall the Ham made program by MM7DBT in the UK. 73 de W2CH Ray 62 years licensed an 80 years old, 100% Disabled Veteran from the Vietnam War, over 50 years ago.😊
