I don't think you answered the question at all. You need to explore selfishness a lot more. How selfishness drives the vast majority of bad behaviour and the spectrum of selfishness that we find in human beings. This is the basis for answering your question.

@@Philosophyandinterestingre-v8d The second point I would make is that you've got go get to the core of the issue. In the title of your video you stated whether people are fundamentally selfish. The concept that needs to be explored here is the spectrum of human selfishness and the idea is to understand what makes up that spectrum as well as what % of people fall into each category

@@Philosophyandinterestingre-v8d The third point I would make is to define the core issue. I believe strongly that bad behaviour is primarily driven by selfishness. You can also have mental illness, impulse control issues, trauma, desperation etc. but it's selfishness that is the primary driver of bad behaviour

I thought about making a tutorial about how I am making things. I am creating content to consume myself. It takes time to move from consuming to creating. Beyond o1, NotebookLM and crafting the structure of the essay it takes time but it's impossible without AI. It's processing 10's of thosuands of pages.

The problem with treating the brain as the fundamental source of consciousness is that the statement begs the question. It may be that the brain is the same as mind but that has first to be proved. So far the problem of consciousness hasn't been solved.

0:00 - Introduction & Historical Context Late 19th/early 20th-century Vienna: strict social norms, repressed views on sexuality, limited understanding of mental health. Freud’s ideas were radical for his time, shocking society and reshaping psychology. 0:35 - Case of Hysteria & Power of Suggestion Notable anecdote: woman “cured” of paralysis by a broken umbrella. Illustrates Freud’s early insight into mind-body links and the unconscious role in symptoms. 1:05 - The Unconscious & Psychoanalysis “Talking cure” (free association, therapy sessions) to uncover hidden memories/desires. Modern science confirms unconscious processes as significant-Freud’s fundamental breakthrough. 1:38 - Dream Analysis: Royal Road to the Unconscious Dreams as symbolic expressions of repressed wishes. Not all specific symbols remain valid, but the idea that dreams reveal emotional truths persists in various therapeutic approaches. 2:28 - The Oedipus Complex Controversial concept: children’s unconscious rivalry and attachment within the family. Modern psychology adapts this to highlight early family dynamics and emotional development. 3:15 - Sexuality & Gender Freud’s groundbreaking recognition of sexuality as central to human motivation. Certain notions (e.g., “penis envy”) now viewed as outdated, reflecting the biases of his era. 4:03 - Jokes & the Unconscious Humor, like dreams, offers a “release valve” for hidden anxieties or desires. Example of businessmen’s joke reveals anxiety about stagnation under an innocuous guise. 4:37 - Totem and Taboo Freud’s speculative theory tying civilization’s origins to a “Primal Horde” parricide event. Anthropologists largely reject the literal story, but it provokes questions on how individual psychology intersects with cultural norms. 5:00 - Influence, Critiques & Evolution of Psychology Freud’s lasting impact: popularizing the unconscious, early childhood importance, defense mechanisms. Many of his specific claims on sexuality/gender have been revised or refuted. Modern neuroscience and psychology refine his framework, keeping core insights while discarding limitations. 6:00 - Concluding Reflections Freud sparked an ongoing conversation about hidden motives, dreams, and human nature. His work reminds us to keep questioning, exploring, and updating our views as science progresses. Even flawed theories can inspire future breakthroughs-Freud’s greatest legacy is his fearless curiosity about the mind.

0:00 - Introduction & Scope Overview of the source materials: Merton’s journals (Volumes 1-5, Dancing in the Water of Life, No Man Is an Island) and biographies (e.g., Beneath the Mask of Holiness). Goal: uncovering The Man Behind the Monk-his inner struggles, evolving spirituality, and social engagement. 0:45 - Early Fervor & Arrival at Gethsemani (1940s) Merton’s initial zeal for the monastic life and whether it masked deeper motives. Sacrifices for a greater purpose vs. the possibility of “escape.” Journals reveal tension between dedication and doubt-even in the earliest days. 1:25 - Solitude & ‘True’ vs. ‘False’ Solitude Merton’s love of nature and silence, as seen in Dancing in the Water of Life and No Man Is an Island. Distinction between humility-rooted solitude (leading to generosity and peace) vs. prideful, isolating solitude. Relevance for our hyperconnected age-how Merton’s solitude can inform our search for inner stillness. 2:20 - Confronting Desire: ‘Run to the Mountain’ & Detachment Internal struggle to reorient worldly love toward God and service. How “letting go” of ego/possessions doesn’t equate to passive withdrawal-rather, an active practice of self-confrontation Ongoing question: genuine calling or subtle form of escapism? 2:55 - Merton’s Forbidden Love: The Relationship with ‘Margie’ Beneath the Mask of Holiness reveals Merton’s affair in the 1960s, challenging vows and personal identity Tension between monastic commitment and the human need for love and connection. How the experience reshaped his understanding of compassion and the redeeming power of love. 3:50 - A Broader Worldview: Social Activism & The 1960s Turmoil Merton’s shift from cloistered monk to outspoken critic of nuclear war and racial injustice. Passion for Peace and other writings condemning societal violence, urging moral responsibility. His evolving conviction that contemplative life and social engagement can-and should-intersect. 4:45 - Stirrings of Inner Conflict & Desire to Travel Journals mention invitations to conferences (e.g., at St. John’s Abbey, a retreat in Cuernavaca, Mexico). Merton’s paradoxical pull: craving new horizons vs. deepening his solitude at Gethsemani. Ultimately, he declines these trips, questioning whether “escape” is truly the answer. 5:25 - Nights with the Psalms & The Power of Ritual Merton’s late-night vigils, reciting Psalms alone in the dark. Descriptions of feeling “face on the floor,” seeking a profound spiritual connection. Solitude as both liberating and perilous-he calls it “dangerous power,” acknowledging potential psychological pitfalls. 6:05 - Tension with the Monastery & Yearning for Hermitage Growing strain between Merton’s evolving inner life and communal monastic structure. He sees the Abbey’s expectations as confining; contemplates a hermitage on monastery grounds or beyond. The search for an environment reflecting his deeper call to contemplation and personal authenticity. 6:50 - Choice & Consequences: Staying or Leaving. Merton weighs the impact on fellow monks if he departs. Worries about the “network of lies” permission-seeking might entail-desiring honest freedom. The discovery of a small cabin, eventual move into a dedicated hermitage, and the community’s mixed reactions. 7:40 - Late Journals: Asia, Zen, & Expanding Spiritual Horizons Encounters with Eastern religions, especially Buddhism-Merton finds parallels to his contemplative practice. Ongoing passion for peace, nuclear disarmament, and ecological sensitivity. A “lifelong learner” mindset-traveling, conversing with spiritual teachers, weaving new insights into his monastic identity. 8:15 - The Paradox of Love & Solitude Revisited Post-affair reflections shape a more nuanced understanding of human connection, compassion, and spiritual solitude. Emphasizes that true solitude feeds an ethic of care for the wider world. Revisits the line between personal desire and committed vocation-an acceptance of contradictions as part of growth. 8:45 - Final Reflections & Enduring Legacy Merton’s honesty about doubt, “inner ambivalence,” and leadership burdens. Summation of Merton’s core message: faith is not static, but an evolving journey demanding courage, vulnerability, and openness to mystery.

0:00 - Introduction & Scope of the Deep Dive Hosts introduce the focus on ancient rhetoric in Greece and Rome Emphasis on both theoretical underpinnings and real-world applications of persuasion 0:31 - Early Greek Rhetoric & Its Negative Connotations Discussion of how rhetoric was initially seen as “trickery” or verbal sleight of hand Mention of Corax and Tisias as early systematizers of persuasive techniques The debate: Is rhetoric about finding truth or simply winning? 1:18 - Plato’s Critique of Rhetoric Plato’s suspicion of rhetoric as potentially manipulative Gorgias dialogue comparison: skilled rhetoricians likened to “pastry chefs” Idea that rhetoric can enslave people to the speaker’s will by bypassing rational thought 2:42 - Aristotle’s Pragmatic Turn: The Three Modes of Persuasion Aristotle reclaims rhetoric as a valuable tool, provided it’s used ethically Logos, Pathos, and Ethos: how appealing to logic, emotion, and character shapes persuasion Contrast with Plato: emotional appeals are not inherently manipulative, if ethically employed 3:50 - Transition to Rome: Cicero & the Power of Words Rhetoric in Rome as a real tool for political and legal success Cicero as the quintessential Roman orator, politician, and statesman His mastery of persuasion in high-stakes scenarios (e.g., winning trials, influencing the Senate) 4:20 - Ethical Questions in Cicero’s Courtroom Strategies Example of the poisoning case (defense of Cluentius) and the notion of “throwing shadows” Reveals how deeply Cicero understood (and sometimes stretched) human psychology for courtroom victories 5:20 - Cicero vs. Catiline: Rhetoric Under Pressure The Catilinarian conspiracy (63 BCE) as a critical moment for Roman politics Cicero’s powerful orations exposing Catiline’s plot and rallying the Senate Use of prosopopoeia (giving voice to the laws of Rome) to evoke strong emotional and logical responses 6:35 - Atticism vs. Asianism: Competing Styles in Roman Oratory Definition of Atticism: clarity, conciseness, restrained emotion Definition of Asianism: ornate, elaborate, and emotionally charged style Ongoing scholarly debate about Cicero’s exact stylistic alignment-and his skillful adaptability 7:40 - Cicero’s Adaptive Strategy & Chiros (Timing) Importance of tailoring the speech to the audience, occasion, and purpose Cicero as a ‘rhetorical chameleon,’ mixing Attic clarity with Asianist drama when needed Lesson for modern communicators: choose the right style for the right moment 8:40 - Quintilian’s ‘Institutes of Oratory’ & Ethical Rhetoric Quintilian (1st century AD) as the premier educator of Roman rhetoric Rhetoric as a holistic way of life, not just a technical skill The ideal orator: a virtuous person with broad education, using persuasion for societal good 9:55 - Applications for Today: Timeless Principles of Persuasion Modern parallels: advertising, social media, political spin doctors The same ancient techniques-logos, pathos, ethos-still shape contemporary discourse Importance of ethical persuasion vs. manipulation in our “information overload” era 11:00 - Critical Thinking & Ethical Communication How understanding rhetoric helps us become more discerning “consumers” of information Tips: examine sources, watch for emotional appeals, evaluate logical consistency Awareness and integrity as key defenses against manipulation 12:10 - Building Trust & Cultivating Character (Ethos) Aristotle’s notion that the speaker’s credibility is essential to genuine persuasion Cicero’s example: skill must be paired with trustworthiness to be truly compelling Relevance for everyday life: authenticity, moral character, and subject mastery 13:30 - Conclusion: Ancient Rhetoric as a Living Art Rhetoric remains alive in modern communication-public speaking, social media, everyday interactions.

0:00 - Introduction & Why Meister Eckhart Matters Hosts kick off the deep dive, noting Eckhart’s profound theological and spiritual ideas Overview of the big questions Eckhart addresses: the nature of God, meaning of existence, and spiritual transformation 0:31 - Made in God’s Image: Trinitarian Theology & Human Intellect Discussion of Eckhart’s view that our intellect is made in the image of God The Son’s relationship to the Father as a mirror for how our minds can be “identical” in divine potential The idea that the source (God) and the image (human intellect) interpenetrate one another 1:18 - Detachment & Letting Go: Creating Space for the Divine Eckhart’s emphasis on renouncing ego and personal desires Analogy of an “equal exchange”: the more we empty ourselves of self-interest, the more room for the Divine Not a call to passivity but a change in perspective-acting from inner freedom rather than ego-driven motives 2:08 - Suffering as a Path to Inner Freedom Eckhart’s radical claim: genuine peace can persist even in Misfortune Why a detached heart can find growth and spiritual wisdom in trials Suffering’s role in loosening our attachment to worldly comforts and egoic control 3:07 - The Ground of the Soul: Depth Beyond Time & Space Metaphor of the ocean depths for the “spark” or “ground” within each person A still, eternal core that remains untouched by life’s surface-level chaos Eckhart’s teaching that this ground directly connects us to the Divine Source 4:00 - The Birth of God Within: Tapping into Eternity Now Eckhart’s image of “God giving birth to the Son in our souls” Challenging the linear notion of time-eternity is accessible in the present A mystical vision: not just imitating Christ, but experiencing the same divine birth ourselves 5:05 - Live Without Why: Acting Beyond Egoic Motives Famous Eckhart phrase explained: not rejecting action, but critiquing self-serving intent Modern scholar John Connelly’s analysis of “living without why” as freedom from attachment to outcomes How this perspective transforms our relationship to success, failure, and even suffering 6:30 - Virtue, Detachment & Ethical Living Eckhart’s view that authentic spirituality naturally flowers into compassion, humility, and generosity Virtue as an expression of a soul aligned with Divine Will, rather than rule-following out of fear Emphasis on action flowing from love and surrender, not passive withdrawal from the world 7:40 - Reconciling Mystical Vision & Everyday Life How to hold Eckhart’s radical ideas alongside daily responsibilities and relationships “Living without why” doesn’t mean apathy-it means a shift toward deeper, more conscious engagement Cultivating mindfulness and trust in a greater power working through us 9:00 - Eckhart’s Radical Theology & Universal Access Eckhart’s inclusive stance: the direct experience of God is available to all His challenge to medieval power structures-emphasizing the “divine spark” in every person The link between personal spiritual insight and making the world a more loving place 11:50 - Integration: Spiritual Practice & Ethical Action Practical pointers: inner surrender, present-moment awareness, and letting Divine grace guide transformation Virtues emerge naturally as we align with the “ground of the soul” Recognizing the same divine spark in others fosters compassion and unity in a divided world 14:10 - Conclusion: Eckhart’s Enduring Relevance Hosts reflect on Eckhart’s continued power to unsettle, inspire, and liberate The invitation to see spirituality as a path to freedom, not escape from the world Parting thoughts: keep exploring, questioning, and recognizing the “birth of God” within
