When you at it folks, the GB&W is similar to Arkansas & Missouri, Trona Railway, & even Transkentucky Transportation. For each has a fleet of DIE-HARD verteran diesels that keep rolling up the miles into the 90'S but prove to be quite the challenge to be kept maintained.

Awesome videos! My only request is longer versions showing complete trains if the footage exists. Fallen Flags and consists galore! Speaking of reroutes, did you guys catch any of the CP Alcos during the Canadian indian blockades? Quite a sight! And I was lucky enough to catch the Soo imspection train with the CNW cars later that afternoon near Watertown, WI and ended up following them up to Portage where i finally caught them filling water tanks and departing 3 Light off the Hwy 16 bridge. Certainly a surprise catch.

This is incredible. On my 14th birthday, in September 1986, my mom took me and two railfan friends to this roundhouse to look at what was there. The three of us asked one of the workers if we could go inside, and he invited us in to look around. We were subsequently given a tour of the entire shop, shuttled from worker to worker. We got to go inside the cab of C628 #6728, we saw GP7 #1518 which had just been repainted into the classic C&NW scheme at this shop before it headed to the Illinois Railway Museum, and to top it all off, we were given a ride in SD40-2 #6812 as it was moved from the roundhouse out to the ready track. One of the workers gave me a valve from an Alco 251 engine, which I still have. I took lots of photos with a cruddy Instamatic camera, and recorded the entire visit on a tape recorder. One of the workers told us that the shop was going to be closing soon--so I imagine that this video was taken about the same time as our visit. In fact, I recall the cab of that MILW unit that you can see next to the roundhouse. I got a photo of the inside of it. It was from #15, an SD45. I always wondered if they used some of its nose to rebuild the #1518 back into its original high-nose design at the Green Bay shops. Anyway, I just can't believe that this video exists. It totally takes me back to that visit. Those shop workers were the best--they gave three teenagers a fantastic tour. My mom was waiting for us for hours and hours in the car, next to the roundhouse.

Great story! Thanks for sharing it with us. Aside from the gracious assistance and permission from CNW in making Centuries of the North Woods, we too have had experiences of kindness from CNW folks when it came to shop access, cab rides and information. I didn't realize that 1518 was painted in Green Bay before presentation to IRM. I thought she was painted at the EMD facility in McCook. RR

Now down to just two trains per week on the former J through Rondout. CN no longer goes to Waukegan and the last two customers are EMCO and WestRock, both in North Chicago. That construction company no longer gets deliveries of aggregates by rail though the siding is still in place.
@EastEndProductionsArchiv-lm3lq4 күн бұрын
Yep. The CN really pissed away the business on this line. Peter Baker at Rondout got 16 loads of gravel A DAY and got great service from the EJ&E. It only took a month or so for CN to kill that business. RR

I worked those round trip from Fox Lake to Chicago but we didn’t have “Metra” cars. If I remember correctly, we usually had four cars and engine. Absolutely love the Milwaukee road.

Thanks! The SOCAL rail society at one time held Wildflower Specials from LA to Mojave to Bakersfield....no longer. The line from Searles to Inyokern/Ridgecrest on the Jawbone Branch was still in the ground while I was there, but if I recall correctly the shipments to China Lake via rail from the Seal Beach Ammo Facility in "Aluminized" 40' box cars had ceased. Forklifts were grounded via a long cable, with the "bad" (leaking) case ammunition, crystalized/crusty-surfaced silk powder bags, and other sketchy materials taken via truck to the burn pit for disposal by the EOD types. Takes a special breed of folk to work in the Trona area....just miserably hot, even though the relative humidity is typically between 16 and the low 30s. Greatly appreciate the sojourn back in time!
