My problem was that Windows can't open the PAGES file, so your method doesn't work. It turns out, however, that I can delete pages in the file name and type zip to convert it to a compressed folder. Then I can extract and convert it to a PDF. And finally, to a Word document. It's such a pain that Apple and Windows do not play well together...
