143 and 144 all had cummins not leyland. Only 141 and 142's started off for a few years with the dreaded leyland engine then went to cummins with voith transmission

I wonder how those who left negative comments about the Pacers 10-12yrs ago felt about them in 2021 when they were withdrawn en Masse. These tough runabouts kept the railways going on local services. The 142's had a purposeful front end design, unlike the 'soft' looking 143's, great acceleration and all seating positioned the correct way, unlike the horrible 150's and 152's.

God I remember being cooped up on both of these going from Derby to Skegness. 90 miles on hard plastic seats. Ouch. The 101 may have been older but at least it was comfy and roomy.

Ghastly little train, I remember when they were introduced, we use to dread them, they were more unreliable and uncomfortable than what they replaced, I still remember hearing their axles scream at Shipley.

It used to have a musty underground tunnel , I am not 40 yet but I do remember the old station in the eighties , going to see nan and grampy on the train from Watford .
@PHDarren6 жыл бұрын
I was commuting from LB to Northampton around 1990-1992 so had both the old station to begin with and the new station build and completion at the end. Hate the new one, the old station had proper cover on the northern platform not the stupid plastic bus stop shelter it was given which gave no protection from the sun in the hot summer and freezing cold in the winter because the walls didn't go all the way down to the ground and the seats were uncomfortable metal benches. Also I remember the old Dunstable platform line still there between the mainline and the old station.

It has now become a little boring reading totally ignorant comments suggesting Pacers were 'cheap' without any evidence to back their statements up. I decided to do a bit of research and came up with some real facts and figures: In the mid 1980s when they were new, a two carriage Class 142 unit cost £350k per unit. A two carriage Class 143 unit cost £300k. A two carriage Class 150/1 Sprinter unit cost £500k per unit, (the latter had a 30 year fatique design life and in recent times there have been severe corrosion issues with some units). When built it was estimated that bogies would have added around £30k to each Pacer carriage. The lower price of the Class 143 was due to competitive tendering by Walter Alexander Coachbuilders of Falkirk. This information came from BRITISH RAIL FLEET SURVEY 9 Diesel Multiple Units The Second Generation and DEMUs by Brian Haresnape, published by Ian Allan Ltd 1986. ISBN 0 7110 1604 6. At this time, a new double decker bus cost around £80k. It can be seen that ONE Class 142 carriage cost over twice the price of a new double decker bus. This was due to the rail nature of the underframe (which was not merely a bus chassis as alleged, but rail based and was built by BREL Derby for Class 141,142 and 144s or Alexander Barclay Kilmarnock for Class 143s. I have not been able to find out the further costs of the various modifications made to Pacers over the years. The main ones were fitting Voith transmission to all Class 142, 143 and 144s by March 1991, due to the high failure rate of the original flawed SCG gearboxes, (probably around £10 - £14m). A direct operating braking system was fitted in 1990-1. The Leyland TL11 engines were replaced by Cummins LT10Rs between March 1993 and April 1996 (to an extent this was due to normal wear and tear, as BR had found that it was more economical to buy new Cummins engines than overhaul the Leyland ones), plus new doors/door mechanisms at the same time. When Pacers were first introduced, the ride quality was certainly a problem on some lines, due to the large amount of poor jointed track that was still around. It is not so much now. In fact the Siemens Desiro Class 185s and 350s are not that much smoother than a Pacer when going over points, despite having bogies.

From memory the underframe was based on the BR high speed freight wagon, max speed 75 mph.

For the price of trains, they were cheap and they were scabby, bouncy and loud garbage.

I heard the wiithdrawal of the Northern Pacers will start in September next year with the last to be removed from traffic in October 2019 before the deadline of Pacers on 31 December 2019. I reckon 'a few people will mourn passing of the Pacer. Northern has announced a multi-million pound investment in 281 new carriages, with the first of the new fleet being delivered by October next year. The 100mph trains will include air conditioning, power sockets, toilets and free WiFi for passengers.
@HORNEBEEDUBLO7 жыл бұрын
It is not so much moaning of the Pacer. It is the fact that on a lot of Pacer routes, (around the same age or marginally older) cascaded Class 150/1s that no other TOC wants, will in fact be used to directly replace them. I consider that a Class 170 Turbostar is a bare minimum acceptable direct DMU to replace a Pacer and the eldest of these are now appraoching 20 years old.

The 143s originally came to Heaton -built by Alexanders of Kilmarnock. Because of massive gearbox problems the gearboxes were changed to Voith -after all the bugs were sorted out they were transferred to Cardiff and Heaton got 142s instead the first being 142 050 in Chocolate and Cream!! -in the North East!

later on the class 142's were retrofitted with Cummins 10 litre turbo LTA10-R 6-cylinder engines with voith hydraulic transmissions. The 143 and 144's also had the same engine and transmission retrofitted. The class 141 also got the same Cummins engine and transmission I've just learned.
