Once Levon, The Hawks, and the Band were brothers, indeed. The key word "once" suggests mystery, but it's no mystery... maybe a poorly kept secret. Truly "heart & soul" human beings and artists, they've given the world so much love and their music "loves on" in a wealth of recordings, videos, and in the millions of musicians they inspired. The iconic tragedy of musicians, addiction, hurt each of them horribly. Alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, pot, heroin, meth... the Band were enabled by family, friends, and their industry advisors, to the point they could not work together. They routinely endangered each other & their loved ones; had myriad DWI injury accidents; and they started dying much too young. So their heroin-coke-fueled "Last Waltz" was a sham; they'd lost their trust in each other; in Dylan; in Producer Scorsese; in their industry advisors. But they toughed it out to earn retirement money. Which they didn't get because so much of the "budget" went to coke. John Hiatt, bless him, is one of the few thriving in recovery. When will we learn to speak up instead of enabling? -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

I met Mavis Staples' guitarist on the bus leaving Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in SF some years. I asked if he went with Mavis to Levon's place. He did. Two of the greatest!

It’s sad that in their later years Levon Helm & Garth Hudson were broke (they were in the biggest band in the world, how could they be broke?)& Robbie Robertson was a multi millionaire. Yet Robbie says he wasn’t stealing money from the band, which is technically true, instead Robbie just arranged to put his name on almost all of The Band’s songs as the sole writer, so he got all the royalties instead of dividing it up with the rest of the group.
