Love the mention of zooms. When I really need f8-f11 depth of field, carrying around f1.2 primes only to then never shoot faster than F4 is dumb. Zooms all day. I only use primes and wide open indoors if I absolutely have to.

I agree. I zoom lenses for event work and use only f2/2.8 primes for portrait and personal work. With how good cameras high ISO performance is we shouldn't be worried about noise and we did in the past.

You should have a look at Voigtländer lenses. I have the 40mm 1.2 for my Canon R8 and it’s surprisingly compact, making it a perfect fit for an also compact camera. You trade autofocus for the size benefit but that’s a non issue for my style of shooting. Canon’s implementation of manual focus guidance (at least for chipped lenses) is also great. Eye tracking works and it’s super easy to nail focus even without punching in.

Domke’s Rock, I still have my original F3 from 1981. I probably have some 4 Domkes ranging for the F-1X (”little bit bigger bag” early 90s) to Camera Satcher Shoulder Bag, the F2 and the aforementioned F3 from 1981. You can not kill these bags and yes, you are right, you do look pretty damn cool rockin’ one of the bags to a news event. Check out Nick Note in the movie ‘Under Fire’, he’s toatin’ around an Domke F2…as well as 2 Nikon F2s and a Leica M4.

@@DeeRosa It's a monster…I bought mine in the early 90s. I believe they (Domke/Tiffen) may have changed the name or designation in all that time. Oh, yeah one other “bag” that I owned (though rarely use nowadays)…Domke’s ‘Photogs Vest’, a blatant rip-off of Banana Republic’s ‘Photojournalist Vest’. By the time I got around to getting one in the early 90s, the fad had faded (a very ‘80s’ thing). Actually, it is a useful tool as it does hold a ton of gear, especially when a bag would only get in the way, but man, you stick out like a sore thumb.

I've been shooting with the 7Artisans 35mm f1.4, due to budget limitations this was the only option, but since I got the focus wrench or whatever that piece of rubber knob is called, shooting with manual focus has been quite fun, got a lot of street photos, some portraits during events and such. Though I really want another prime lens, I think I gotta get the Tamron 17-70mm, cause in my experience with the Fuji 18-55, I do need just a little bit more reach, and ofcourse the constant f2.8 would be very nice for bokeh, aand Also to prevent the mysterious white dot on my camera sensor from appearing as a black dot. It is not a dust particle cause I have cleaned the sensor 3 times (with the swab and cleaning fluid), and judging from the reflection, it appears to be underneath the top most layer of the sensor 😢. Also, it appears after f4, and also if I do long exposure it dissappears, so to clearly show it I need to make the aperture as small as possible then it will appear.

OMG subbed! ❤ you tell it how it is. I lost my love for photography around 2012 with all the pixel peepers and OCD purists. I was over post processing RAWS. So I have just been using my trusty fujifilm X10 since, SOOC. Haven’t even looked at a newer model until I bought the X-T30ii 2 days ago and coupled it with this lens + the Fuji 35mm f2. This camera will be 100% SOOC shots with the film simulations (I just learnt about recipes holy what!!) so to the point subbed, I love your videos. Thank youuuu my friend.

lovely thank you. i am digging my x-m5 w a fujifilm 27mm f2.8 pancake (i also really like voigtlander 27mm f2, but manual focus w/o a viewfinder is a hit and miss). i am curious about your experience with fanny packs, or what recommendations you might have (a fanny pack sounds like a good idea, but my sense of taste gets in the way;).

I am sorry, but I am gonna need to push back on your opinion on hating this camera because it is overhyped. For the context I am on my 2nd X100V (Sold the first one for 2k, regret my decision and bought it again) and before x100v I owned X100s. I am not hating on the camera, but I find that there are legitimate reasons to think this camera is overhyped and the hype really does disservice for most of the people who purchase this camera. I have seen people who bought X100V or VI as they're first camera, the users are not aware if they even like 35mm as a focal length, they do not really find a need for a optical viewfinder, since they mostly use evf, leafshrutter is something they do not really need and with X100VI the megapixel count is just bonkers for any first camera buyer. These first camera buyers just buy X100VI because that is the only camera they know, but lets face the facts these people are paying for features they do not need and they would be better of with any other camera, like for example XE4 or maybe even XPRO3. Most of the pros these people find with X100vi can be found on those two models. Sadly it appears XE4 is discontinued and like with XPRO3 it is unknown when if ever new models of those cameras will ever be available on the market. Without any facts to prove it I do partially blame the success on X100V on why Fuji has not made those new models.

You can market it all you want. You can add all the software features you want. At the end of the day if the final image it produces is not $800-$1200 better than a camera made 5-10 yrs earlier, then its overhyped. Companies have to sell something and innovations in software and chips move faster than innovations in optics.

Amen! I was quite taken aback with your video. It was as if I was looking in a mirror and seeing myself speaking. I totally agree with everything you said! A Professional Photographer once told me that amateur photographers often take better photographs than do professionals. The difference is that a professional photographer has to take great photos to get the job done. An amateur only has himself to please. I spent 25+ years as a part-time professional. Now I am an amateur. Money ruined Photography for me. When I went back to being an amateur, I regained my love of Photography. I only have to please myself.

It's worth mentionning that the EF-M system didn't only get lenses from Canon : Sigma and Viltrox made a great job of filling out the mount with prime lenses that are actually worth it : the Sigma 16, 30 and 56mm f/1.4 are prime examples of this (no pun intended). In my opinion, the EF-M cameras are pretty underrated (the whole system is). Cameras are decent, and you can find really great affordable gems in this (like the EOS M5 that NOBODY talks about but has a good sensor, decent AF and AMAZING ergonomics for such a small camera body. It was once the EF-M flagship, shame it never got a mark II (it was merged with the M6 line when the M6ii got released. I would have loved an M5 body with the performance of the M6ii). Even for beginners, getting an M50 is a much better idea than getting an R100 nowadays, simply for the lower price, and the articulated touch screen (+ the cheap lenses, which are not here on RF mount for the most part... even the Sigma primes are more expensive in their RF form than they are in their EF-M form...) I personally had an M50,m but it felt really plasticky and toyish, and that's ultimately what led me out of the system. If I want a nice, weather sealed, extremely well built camera with super small and tiny lenses for travel, but without compromising too much on image quality, I go for my Olympus E-M5 mark II. I'm more than happy with this camera for moving around, the small lenses like the 14mm f/2.5 or the 20mm f/1.7 are excellent, the 12-32mm Lumix pancake kit lens is also very sharp and the camera has some really nice creature comforts like a large EVF, excellent Wi-fi transfer with a good app that still supports a 10 year old camera on its latest version (Fujifilm could never), and excellent features to compensate for the relatively lower resolution of the 16MP sensor : if I have a small tripod with me, I can use pixel shift to get 64MP RAW files, or 40MP JPEGs, I can use live composite for thunderstorm photography or anything that involves light painting like star trails etc. Micro four thirds might not be as "forgotten" as the EF-M system but for travel and stuff I feel like it's maybe a better system altogether.
