Your videos take me back to reality that all these lavish and equally outlandish prices these camera brands demand is absurd and ideally put us back into the same spot. They all do the same things. Whatever you shoot (Fujifilm, Canon, Leica, Nikon, etc), will produce you up to good results that YOU can achieve. These expensive cameras don't make or break your photography skills, YOU do. Thank you man you save me (for the most part) from GAS mentality.

nah I don't believe that at all. this sounds like a "gear doesn't matter" argument, but just 10 minutes ago I was messing with my 10 year old micro four thirds and compared results with my new full frame (A7cii). even with the same settings and focal length, the newer camera did much better with lowlight/backlight and colors. the FF also did better in depth of field, but that's a function of the lens more than camera.

I switched from Leica to Fuji around 10 years ago. I had bought a brand new M9, a s/h 28mm, s/h 50mm and a new 90mm. The idea was to slim down on equipment by using just one camera plus three primes. Took the M9 out of the box and started shooting some test shots. The images were soft using all three lenses, and with some more testing I discovered that the rangefinder was off. Brought the camera back to the shop and after testing they confirmed it and the camera had to be sent back to Germany. In the meantime the loaned me an M8 (they hadn't got another M9) and a filter. Long story short 3 months later the M9 hadn't arrived back and I was still using the crop sensor M8. The store offered me a full refund on the body and with part of that I bought a Fuji x-pro and some lenses which was way better than the M8 IMO. I kept the Leica lenses to use on the Fuji via adapter but in tests I found the Fuji lenses to be just as sharp, so I got rid of them. I swopped the 28mm for a s/h Fuji x-T1 which I still have and which has performed flawlessly over those last 10 years. Since then I've added the medium format Fuji 50r and some MF lenses. Leica may have produced some classy film cameras down the years but I believe they lost that status when they moved to digital and compared to the likes of Fuji are way, way overpriced IMO.

I did the opposite than what you did. I had the GFX100 and GFX100s and a bunch of GF glass.... I went to a M10R and later M11 and Leica glass. One thing that will hit you after a while is the bulkyness of the GFX system. The lenses are HUGE and heavier. The image quality is great, , but the kit is big. Good luck with your GFX system and use what you like. Great video!

Can relate a lot. Moved to Leica from Fuji two years ago. The idea was that i could really share lenses for digital and film being all in the M system. And as much as I love my M-A for film photography I can't bond with my M10-R and I'm far from enjoying taking photos as much as I did with my X100F or my X-Pro3. I had a GFX 50R for some time but it was just to bulky for how I'd like to use a camera. Anyways.. waiting for a possible X-Pro update or something into that direction and I think then the M-10R has to go. I think it really comes down to what tools inspire you and get the job done. And that's a very personal and subjective thing.

Fell in love with the Hassy, so I move to the X2D; that is by far my favorite camera to shoot for what I do. As for my EDC, it had been the OG Fuji X100 since I bought it new 13 years ago, but I switched to the X100 VI and absolutely love it, especially since it has IBIS (like my X2D) low light/night photography, as well as 4:3 and 5:4 aspect ratios (the two aspect ratios I shoot or crop to in my X2D. I love all my Leica glass, and I won't crap on the brand's gear, but for what I do, the Hassy X2D and X100 VI are my nirvana.

I’m glad you went on this journey and shared it with us, because your video where you were like, “I shoot sports with Leica because for a long time I kinda sucked at shooting Leica and I enjoyed the challenge” was such an eye opener for me. I have a lot of reverence for sports shooters and value your perspectives, because I shoot a lot of concerts and the demands are similar, but sports pay better than concerts, and it seems to me that photographers really have to pass a high threshold of results in imaging before sporting events will hire them. (With concerts, if you live in a small music market, you can shoot just by showing up with a camera). So seeing you, a professional sports photographer, admit that a camera demanded a lot of you and was a challenge to use made me feel 10000x better about the learning curve I always experience when trying new gear, a new video codec or workflow, or whatever. That vulnerability meant a lot to me and I’m glad you got what you needed out of the Leica system. It makes me feel like whenever I move into my next camera system and feel that “Am I good enough to deserve this piece of equipment?” self-doubt, I can know that professionals feel it too sometimes during a big change.

I gave my partner my XT3 bc I cant fit it into my backpack for my walk to work and bought rhem a ttartisans lens bc they like to manual focus. My partners photos have real character. You can see the layers the are built from manual focusing and even if they miss a few focus, the ones they nailed are imo really amazing. Far more amazing than what AF can achieve. It really doesnt matter the pixels, the glass, or anything really. If you can think you can do it, you will do it. It takes time, effort and feeling lost sometimes but it doesnt have to be some $10000 camera with the biggest pixel count to ever exist. People conflate gear with skill and thats just not how it goes. Great video and great shots!

Today, Leica’s business model is the same as any other luxury brand. It is an exclusive well crafted luxury item, not a professional product, really. Their range finder camera have been around since the 1930’s and were amazing for the time, the compactness was a true novel and is what started the street photography movement well represented by HCB. They were also very rugged and reliable being all mechanical which made them the standard for photojournalism post WWII. I just wished I never sold my M lenses, if only I could have known one day I could use them again on my GFX body…

I am an amateur photographer shooting mostly street and documentary style photos that skew toward narrative photos styles inspired by artists such as Rinko Kawauchi, Raymond Depardon, Todd Hido, etc... as style reference. I currently shoot with Fuji X-T4m Fuji X-H2 and also a NIkon F3. I am thinking of trading in the X-T4 and a few lenses in order to upgrade to a Leica. Would you say that Leica M (looking at 10 or 11) would be a big step? or should I go with a Q3 (a bit pricey for a point and shoot. also would it be somewhat similar to my X-H2?). I will still keep my X-H2, but is weighing to go with either a Q or M system. Since you seem to be more invested in Fuji system now, I figure you can provide some insight from a Fuji user perspective. Thanks.

Honest question: You mention those who deliberately choose a system that helps them slow down, by demanding a bit different workflow approach - and you dismiss their reason and claim user error. Is there a possibility that you were a bit too quick when jumping to that conclusion? Or do you really mean that choosing a tool that slows your process down to gain a more deliberate way of shooting is a useless argument? I am not in the slow down camp myself, but I don’t quite see how such a broad generalisation is warranted.
@DeeRosa8 ай бұрын
@geiranders70 You misunderstood my statement and I’m not sure why; I am not against the slow down crew but I don’t subscribe that you have to get a certain camera or only ONE brand in order to accomplish that. It can be done with any camera system. It’s a choice. It doesn’t have to be a Leica. It can be a DSLR, it came be a Fuji. I did not dismiss that notion at all and was very clear that the user error was on those who choose not to slow down not those who don’t “buy the right camera”.

I find Leicas glass options definitely appealing, but they are extremely pricey for me. I just recently bought an M3 to use with a vintage Leica 50mm Summicron collapsible, but that’s because I enjoy the rangefinder experience so much. I’ve been shooting on 2 different ql17s for the last few years and enjoy that 50mm look so for me it made sense to get that M3. In terms of my main photography though, I primarily use a Sony a7c and Pentax 67. Both of them have tons of great glass and a lot that can be had at a quite affordable price. If I sold all my Pentax gear and all my Sony gear I would just be able to afford a Leica digital body without a modern Leica lens. For me that trade off doesn’t seem worth it for what I can achieve with the gear I do have. Shooting leica has some unique benefits to the rangefinder experience and their glass but there’s significant downsides aside from cost and if those aren’t an issue to the photographer then I think it’s worth the trade off. I just ain’t one of them at the moment

'More compression' is cited here as an advantage of medium format but that is a myth. Check out a video by magic wedding photographer titled 'Lens Compression: APS-C Mode vs Full Frame on Sony A7R V'
@LIGHTHUNTER.D8 ай бұрын
@@definingslawek4731 it’s not that it’s “more compression”. The lens is the focal length it says it is, as with APS-C being wider. What I said is true.
@definingslawek47318 ай бұрын
@@LIGHTHUNTER.D What do you mean by that? The lens being the focal length it says it is changes nothing besides depth of field, and with digital medium format lenses being slower than FF, there is NO change. I mean, besides the fact that at f4 for example on the 50mm equiv medium format lens, the depth of field will be shallower than at f4 on the FF lens. But you can just open up the aperture on the ff, and ff has more opportunity for shallow DoF anyway. DoF is the only difference I can think of really. It works between aps c or smaller formats like phones and full frame. A phone has an f1.8 lens so it gets the same exposure as your full frame camera at f1.8, but given the same FOV it will have a much deeper depth of field simply because it's like a 1-10mm lens instead of like a 75 or whatever.

This is practically how I always feel when I think of my switch from Sony back to Nikon and Fuji. Sony is popular, I didn't exactly enjoy shooting it after I picked up a Z6II. Didn't like the build quality or the digital hotshoe Sony was using so bailed. Fast forward a handful of years and Sony is gone and Nikon and Fuji are back in a big way and I even invested in a GFX100S. It's money, but I'm a happier shooter for it.

In my opinion, at some point when you work hard and get exceptionally good at what you do you can shoot with everything. At this stage of your career gear not only should be able to keep up with you but also bring you joy. I use my Sony' A7R5 x2 for assignements and M11-P just for fun. I love working with sony because it's reliable and doing my personal projects on Leica because i love the process of ragefinder. There's no good or bad answear, Fujifilm makes great cameras so I wouldn't listen to those comments.

Nice truth bomb video 👍. I shoot all kinds of different cameras, and it all depends on what your goal is image-wise. I like the camera that gives me the shortest, simplest way to get there. For portraits, that's a GFX 50R, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. But when I shoot dance, as soon as it becomes dynamic, i simply have to switch to an R5 because the AF gets in the way (and I can't reliably focus manually with that 50R viewfinder: kudos to you 👍). Have shot both subjects on a Leica M before, and it definitely can be done. But it has limitations. Tell you what though: if I grab a camera to take with me on holiday, it's an M. I love small and simple.

I think it just comes down to what you prefer to use and whatever inspires you to go make photos. If you want an M6 and that makes you excited to shoot, then I say spend your money and get an M6. Same goes for a Hassy, F3, AE1. Not only is it that though but is it a tool than can get the job done? There are plenty of folks doing commercial work with brands like Oakley, GUESS, Dior etc etc that still use 5diii's (which I love), and more creative work where people are shooting on $100 polaroid cameras in that same space. The endless talk about gear is so silly.. just use what you want.

sheeeesh lol talk about a return on investment lol. One thing about leicas is they depreciate very very slowly.
@DeeRosa5 ай бұрын
Actually not true - if I’m being honest. If you bought the new Leica M11 at launch for $8K after 30 days you’d only be able to sell it back to Leica or other resellers for $5K. On grey market like Fred Miranda or Facebook you’d only be able to sell for $6K. Don’t buy a new Leica. Buy used. Used gear doesn’t depreciate as much after initial purchase. But Leica has a larger depreciation due to inaccessibility at MSRP. So when people HAVE to resell they have to lower their price dramatically. Leica is a bad investment but sometimes you get a great deal.
@DayumMarq5 ай бұрын
@@DeeRosa that’s true. lol I guess another way to put it would be buying a used Leica, usually stays at the price for a good amount of time. My mp240 has only gotten more expensive in the used market since I bought it. But definitely took a drop off from the original msrp. As with all things tho, if there’s no demand for it the price will just drop until someone buys it haha. Leicas are so niche it’s gotta be tough to sell one. A lot crazy cameras out there if I was in the market for a camera and had $4k+ to spend lol.
@airi659115 күн бұрын
Good video. Leica is a brilliant system. The higher price of Leica is because it is made in Germany and they are paying people properly. Consumers are too used to having things cheap by being made in low cost countries where working conditions may not be as nice as where you live. So perhaps reflect on that. Ultimately the gear makes less of a difference and it's down to the skill of the photographer. BTW - Your photos are so good and inspiring me to get better...
