I moved to Reno from Porterville, Calif in late 1998, and lived off of Keitzke and Plum til late 2000...I loved livin in Reno, had a great job at Custom Glass Inc. off of 2nd St, my cousin was a hostess/server at The Spice House (a strip joint) and as I was goin thru a divorce, that was optimal for my 25yr old self...everyone spoke English, crime rates were low, a was Clamper so I had a lot friends to party with, and I made good money....I left Reno, moved to Westlake, Ohio, outside of Cleveland because my girl asked me to, the 9/11 happened, and I enlisted and ended up deploying to both Iraq and Afghanistan....Smmfh

Moving back to the contiguous 48 in the next few months and planning on renting to see if Reno is right for my family. I'm seeing affordable rental homes in Fernley. Good area? Zillow shows a 40-minute to Reno. Is that realistic?

It depends... if you are comfortable with the commute, it is a pretty straight/flat shot on 80. That said, it does get windy and if there is weather, it is not uncommon to see semi trucks flipped. Happy to chat more if needed :)

Wow Sarah, you should really consider moving to the Bay Area if you are not satisfied here! We moved here from Houston 10 years ago and my life was a wreck there with the horrific traffic, the real estate taxes, the mold and mildew, the humidity with the hot weather, and so many other things! Reno is an amazing place to live. By the way, I lived in the Bay Area for many years prior to that. I’m really shocked that a realtor would post these things. There are many places I have lived and NONE that are as pleasant as Reno. Every place you live has drawbacks, but I haven’t found many here. I’m now in my 60’s and we’ve looked at a bunch of places to finally retire with better weather, but honestly, the weather is a little challenging 2-3 months out of the year and that’s about it. It is MUCH worse in other places. The utilities are FAR less here than I was seeing in the Bay Area and Houston! What the heck was that all about! Soak in what is great here, Sarah! Your negativity is awful! I’m not sure I would want you guiding me if I was looking to move here. Go back to the Bay Area where you couldn’t afford to live on 3X-4X the income and see how much you miss it!

Wow, housing prices in South Reno are comparable to California housing prices? Maybe property taxes and other fees are a little less? What about HOA, utility and insurance costs? How do people afford to live in South Reno? What are the major employers?
@sarahisselling16 күн бұрын
It all depends on which parts. You can still buy in South Reno for $600K. It’ll be a 2000 sq. ft. home with a tiny yard (most likely). HOAs are neighborhood-specific. Mine are only $60 quarterly, so it really depends. Utilities in South Reno are the same as the rest of the city. Insurance can be tricky, especially with all the recent fires. I predict that will become a major obstacle in the future for the whole area. Major employers are in tech (Tesla, Panasonic, Amazon), healthcare (a couple of major hospitals here), and manufacturing.

I have lived in Reno for 35 years and love it. But I do agree that some of the main city streets are unattractive, no real planning with architecture and infrastructure, and so many high rise apartment buildings going up are stripping our view of the mountains. But I live in a beautiful area south of town, and it colors why I find Reno to be very beautiful, especially if you live mostly on the west side of town where it’s greener. I love all the seasons, except the wildfires in summer mostly coming from California. The city is becoming more diverse, nice to see, but also more crowded and congested. It takes a while for people to like Reno, but once you settle in most people enjoy living here.

To add on the transportation, because our public transit system is not great and have to have a vehicle it has made the traffic worse. Limited bike lanes and almost no bike trails for those outdoorsy people. The trails that we have are more geared for ATV/UTV’s and dirt bikes.

The Reno and Carson City area. Has been rapidly expanding since about 1985. Take it from someone who drove from California to the Reno Air Races every year from 1983 to 2006. It’s crazy how it still keeps growing by leaps and bounds! That area does have lots of perks! 😎

Good Morning! I enjoy your video's! Until recently my Wife and I lived in Cold Springs way up in north Reno. Without any doubt Cold Springs is the absolute best community in the Reno Sparks area. Its obvious most of the residents are senior citizens and you can walk on paved walking trails for miles and feed deer at the same time. White Lake is beautiful year round and freezes over during the winter and is absolutely stunning! Its best to have a four wheel drive vehicle to get to Lemmon Drive for groceries. Early morning commute to work can be challenging. Best to set Medical appointments for after 10am. Its not unusual to see wild horses walking through neighborhoods in Cold Springs. I always enjoyed driving the entire McCarren loop just for fun. Rarely would we go to downtown Reno. Sparks had a better appeal and nice stores.

I moved here in 2017 from northern California & was able to procure housing before prices skyrocketed (caused by big tech moving into the region w/o building any housing for its workers). Things I like about Reno: natives are friendly & actually talk to strangers which rarely happens in California. It's also easy to escape the mostly-ugly town w/an airport, a train the the East Bay & the interstate; there are for its size many restaurants & not all are national chains; we have a symphony, ballet & chamber orchestra; there's a small but growing jazz & indie music scene; one excellent used bookstore (Grass Roots); a maker's space (the Generator); an REI; and an IMAX. What I don't like: the arid atmosphere is hard on skin & makes allergies worse; winter's too cold & summer's too hot; drug gangs are real & people get shot & stabbed; the streets are inadequate for its population so there's always road work happening; the festivals are the same year-after-year & become boring; the medical care is okay but access sucks; and now the housing's outrageously expensive so forget about moving into better accommodations. Verdict: it's pretty good for a larger town but it's not for everyone.
@sarahissellingАй бұрын
These are all such great points! I agree with everything you said 💯. Hurray for the arts and for Grassroots too 😊🙌🤓.
