Markham skatepark southeast corner of Markham Road and Hwy 7 Skated there many times and remember buying a set of UFO conical wheels there and many Lonnie Toft stickers and the little Sim and Tracker stickers. Skated with Dave Campbell quite a few times also, This was before the Superbowl and Landsdowne skateparks. i bought the first skiateboard out of Peter Wheldrakes hogtown skate shop at Main and Gerrard. A variflex el gato with indy 169's and bones threes.

this earthquake still comes to mind from time to time... although the building will withstand (hopefully), it is still advised to go under desks (i know it's kind of embarrassing, i also wait till the last moment) since ceiling parts and drawers can fall on you. running out of the building while the earthquake is going on isn't advised, unless you know the building is not designed to withstand it. roof parts and windows falling outside is far more likely to hit you than the building (which all except really old should be built to standards) collapsing on you. once the earthquake has settled, it is better to go out (making sure nothing is falling) and check that there are no major damage to the building (maintenance crew should be doing this for large buildings) in japan, if you are entering a structure that is expected to collapse with an earthquake, there should be a briefing beforehand telling how and where to go when an earthquake happens (those places aren't open for public though, and helmet is a must)

When you said "the emergency doors shut" what does that mean? Do Japanese buildings have doors that lock you inside?
@GregInTokyo Жыл бұрын
They are fire doors that are meant to stop the spread of fires. There are always routes around them for people to get to fire escapes on either end of the building.

What worries me the most in this video is the idea that people have to work in offices like that one. Imagine that...yeah- there has been a really bad earthquake and you feel scared to death. But on the other hand you deeply know that this was the most remarkable moment in your entire lifetime....and it just lasted for 3 minutes. Back to office-work and bungee-jumping on your weekends.

It’s interesting seeing the calm demeanor of everyone here. Meanwhile, I was huddled under a table in an English class with 2 women who were screaming in my ear as though that was the end. Our building was only 3 stories. Not being from Japan and never being in an earthquake over 5.0 before, I thought we were going to die.
@00ta3 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's not a wise way to run out of a building; earthquake-resilient buildings can mostly function as a kind of shelter against falling rubbles and tsunami, according to my experience in 2011.
@redwithblackstripes8 ай бұрын
It really depends on the context you are in, sometimes you are not in a modern building, or they are hazardous materials,fire risks or the ceiling is coming down, the wise thing is to have a plan tailored to your situation in case that happens.

In Japan, it is said that there are more than 1,000 earthquakes a year that can be felt by the body. And buildings are built with the expectation of a major earthquake. They have built a relationship of trust with builders. Also, schools and companies always conduct drills in anticipation of earthquakes. This is why they can remain calm like a man drinking coffee.

KZbin suggested this video for me. It's been quiet a while, but I was in Tokyo just before the Sendai quake struck, so I missed it. I was, though, in Northridge for the 1994 Northridge quake. That was huge, but brief. I don't think that one shook for more than 20 or 25 seconds. I'm glad your co-workers saved their drinks from a disastrous spill. Another was still on their computer moving their mouse, during the quake. That's dedication. He should have got a raise for that.

Hey I just realized I am in this video at 2:30 I wipe out, lol. I recognized my hightop blue Nike’s, and stickers I on my protect helmet!
i suppose that a 9.0 richer in "epicenter" is about a 6.0 or less in tokyo 'cause fortunally tokyo was too far from the earthquakes (they was 3 different main shocks in the northeast, on the sea, if i remember well) "epicenter"

Great! I skated there just when it opened (can't remember when) but I was so bad at it, and never seemed to improve. But I loved it. Thanks for posting this video. The building, if I remember, was actually the old curling rink, though probably a barn before that. I had to make a movie for some class at MDHS as well. It was stop action of me skiing through the school. Probably in 79 too. Do you remember what course this was for? I can't remember.
@GregInTokyo6 жыл бұрын
Was that perchance the stop-motion film where you went out from the shop wing, over towards the football field (where the new school is now) and ended up in a forest somewhere? If so, we actually made that together! The forest was behind my house. Mr Dickinson's film studies class it was. Bird course if there ever was one.
@complicitytheory6 жыл бұрын
you know... the part I remember the most was trying to ski up the stairs, and failed, but I remember coming out of the shop wing, I think electronics. And it was definitely Mr Dickinson. I wish I could remember more of it. Is that all you remember?
@GregInTokyo6 жыл бұрын
We did a bogus "jump" cut where you were up on the football stands and we filmed from underneath so that you were supposedly flying through the air then you just magically appeared in the forest. Don't ask me why I remember this so well. Probably because that class was the most fun.
