The earthquake started about 20 seconds before I started filming, Because it was going on so long I just hoped to catch a bit of it. I didn't know I'd catch the main tremors which happened after a minute. There was little actual damage in our area of the office but copiers and drinks machines fell over elsewhere.

Well, if you don't drink your tea or coffee, the earthquake is likely to just spill it and waste it. It's not like there's anything anyone can do the stop the earthquake. I guess that's part of what makes long earthquakes particularly disconcerting.

In Japan, it is said that there are more than 1,000 earthquakes a year that can be felt by the body. And buildings are built with the expectation of a major earthquake. They have built a relationship of trust with builders. Also, schools and companies always conduct drills in anticipation of earthquakes. This is why they can remain calm like a man drinking coffee.

It was preventable. There were old stone markers in Fukushima saying "don't build stuff below this", and people didn't listen. This is the danger of building along the shore where there is no protected harbor. That's why all the major port cities in Japan (and other nations in the ring of fire) are built in protected harbors. Because it offers protection from Tsunamis. It wasn't a mystery. But fools decided to build there at Fukushima anyway. Now they know why! Maybe they should put a second stone marker next to that ancient one, with the inscription "no, really, don't build below here!"

It’s interesting seeing the calm demeanor of everyone here. Meanwhile, I was huddled under a table in an English class with 2 women who were screaming in my ear as though that was the end. Our building was only 3 stories. Not being from Japan and never being in an earthquake over 5.0 before, I thought we were going to die.

KZbin suggested this video for me. It's been quiet a while, but I was in Tokyo just before the Sendai quake struck, so I missed it. I was, though, in Northridge for the 1994 Northridge quake. That was huge, but brief. I don't think that one shook for more than 20 or 25 seconds. I'm glad your co-workers saved their drinks from a disastrous spill. Another was still on their computer moving their mouse, during the quake. That's dedication. He should have got a raise for that.

this earthquake still comes to mind from time to time... although the building will withstand (hopefully), it is still advised to go under desks (i know it's kind of embarrassing, i also wait till the last moment) since ceiling parts and drawers can fall on you. running out of the building while the earthquake is going on isn't advised, unless you know the building is not designed to withstand it. roof parts and windows falling outside is far more likely to hit you than the building (which all except really old should be built to standards) collapsing on you. once the earthquake has settled, it is better to go out (making sure nothing is falling) and check that there are no major damage to the building (maintenance crew should be doing this for large buildings) in japan, if you are entering a structure that is expected to collapse with an earthquake, there should be a briefing beforehand telling how and where to go when an earthquake happens (those places aren't open for public though, and helmet is a must)

Call me ignorant or dumb but never realised how long Earthquakes lasted. I thought they'd be quite quick but destructive but then again saying that 4 minutes isn't a long time on the scale of things. In the UK we rarely get earthquakes so I've never been in one.

depends on how large the earthquake is! a 5-6 magnitude is farily common in California and last under a minute. Alot more comes into play depending on the soil composition of where you live.

+Nathan Johnson This is a subduction quake which always happen under the ocean floor,they are rare,the Indian Ocean quake was a subduction quake,they are usually very big...8 mag.plus and generally spawn tsunamis,because the tension at the plates under the ocean have been straining for thousands of years eventually they give in hence you have much longer quakes,from 3 min. - 5 min...depending on how shallow the quake,the deeper the quake the less damaging it is...depending on where the quake happens(country)will be dependent on amount of damage,Japan has great building codes so you will see less damage than in other countries,its the tsunamis that could take the highest death toll
@kevinday107
@kevinday107 7 жыл бұрын
most quakes do not last this long. Japan's 8.9 was a mega quake. Here in California they last anywhere from 15 seconds to 1.5minutes. I've been in much more violent and destructive shaking than in this video, that lasted only about 15 seconds here. The type of faults involved, the type of soil you live on, and your proximity to the epicenter can make a bigger difference than the actual magnitude. Typically the larger magnitudes last a bit longer, but what really makes a difference is how long the rupture is on the fault. For example. the Northridge earthquake f 1994was a 12 mile fault rupture and lasted from 20 to 30 seconds depending on the topography in and around your location. The Landers Earthquake of 1992 ruptured up to 53miles long and lasted up to 2 minutes in some areas.

At 1:35, you said "it's better if you go out" the building. I assume you're new to Japan? It is more risky if you stay outside during earthquakes. Falling windows will definitely kill you. We Japanese have a strong faith into our buildings.
@GregInTokyo

Actually I've lived in Japan for a total of 14 years. The getting out was meant to mean assembling at the external evacuation meeting point as per company policy. Building security told us first to stay put then had everyone evacuate the building about 20 minutes later.

+Chung do Current buildings here in Japan won't collapse unless we are shaken at intensity 7-upper, but that is a very rare thing. That is why, starting from young age, schools teach us to refrain from going outside unless if there's no any physical hazards.
@whoever6458
@whoever6458 3 жыл бұрын
@@ryun25 They tell us not to run outside in California too. I did it once because the earthquake started right when I walked in the door and so I couldn't help but run out. The thing about running in an earthquake is that once you start, you can't stop. I ran until long after the earthquake itself was over but I guess it's good that I got some exercise. Nothing at all fell here but it was a 7.1 in Mexico. I was in two ones that big or bigger before that and nothing fell from the building, although my lamp did fall during the Landers earthquake and that made me somewhat afraid but I was only 12. There was another 7.1 kind of nearby last year and I only got up and went to the hall because it seemed to last longer than I thought it should for me to just stay sitting in front of my computer. My cat was on the top of the cat tree and she didn't seem to even care that there was an earthquake. I did really want to run outside during that one but just because it starts to get disconcerting when the shaking keeps going, even if it's not bad, because you never know when it might get worse.

Actually, it's not a wise way to run out of a building; earthquake-resilient buildings can mostly function as a kind of shelter against falling rubbles and tsunami, according to my experience in 2011.
@redwithblackstripes

It really depends on the context you are in, sometimes you are not in a modern building, or they are hazardous materials,fire risks or the ceiling is coming down, the wise thing is to have a plan tailored to your situation in case that happens.

When you said "the emergency doors shut" what does that mean? Do Japanese buildings have doors that lock you inside?

British stiff-upper lip and all that rot. I stutter at the worst point because I was getting scared. The roof tiles hadn't started falling and it was more of a large rocking motion than abrupt shaking so I wasn't worried about anything dropping on me just the whole building collapsing as on 9/11.

What worries me the most in this video is the idea that people have to work in offices like that one. Imagine that...yeah- there has been a really bad earthquake and you feel scared to death.
