My father went through PI in 1951. He said when they were marching he thouht they looked sloppy. One day he had fire watch duty in the barracks so he was at a distance while they marched. He could then see are well they marched.

In my time aboard PI I never saw anyone march at left shoulder beyond transitioning between rifle positions with marching manual. Did there used to be drill cards that stipulated marching at left shoulder?

He moves them with ease...I got to do that once during practice for IG Inspection...even got to call my Daddy's cadence...that sent chills down my back 30 years later his cadence echoed once again at PI. Unsure if I ever told him.

I could be very biased but I'm very particular with who used to call cadence for me, still to this day, my senior drill instructor had the best cadence rhythm and voice. He was very passionate bout drill. He did more than njst call cadence, sing cadence, he felt the cadence qnd when he sung it, it still gives me the chills. If there is anything to this day that I take away from the Corps, it was drill.

Is form for chow on that drill card? He almost marched them right into the 1st Bn. chow hall. My final drill was indoors. Inclement weather card, no actual marching. It was a lifesaver. BTW awesome camera work there, DI Michael J Fox!

After years of thinking about it I've come to the conclusion that Marine Corps cadence in this style was probably a combination of Irish Sean Nos singing and African American slave chants. The Irish folk music especially, you can hear the Irish folks influence in alot of Sea Shanty's and Naval songs and it's probably that Naval tradition that you hear in this style of Marine cadence. Check out Sean Nos singing
