It was amazing to arrive on Parris Island in April of 1956, as a member of a mob of Marine wannabees that could barely stand on the yellow footprints, and within a week we were beginning to march in step (NOT VERY WELL, I ADMIT). Then comes the day when all the boondocker heels are striking the parade deck in unison and the sound of it sends chills through you, and the slap-sound of the manual of arms being performed together makes you straighten your backbone even straighter. My God it was a great feeling. And though it has been sixty years since I left the Marine Corps, the memories are still vivid. Semper Fi, Marines. Make us proud.

@@bray1961 Billy Ray, there's a book you may be interested in reading. It was written by a Marine who enlisted in 1958, two years after I did, and went through PI. He remained in the Corps for thirty-seven-and-a-half years, retiring as a bird Colonel. His book is "We'll All Die As Marines." I bought it and downloaded it on Amazon. I've read it several times because it brings back so many memories, even though I did a year in the Reserves and then three years Regular Marine Corps, and didn't spend a long career on active duty. I recommended it to one of my former DIs who I located through the website, ToGetherWeServed. He knew a number of Marines mentioned in the book. Semper Fi, buddy.

It was 36 years ago last week that I graduated from MCRD PI. Feels like yesterday. Listening to the Senior Drill Instructor is like a sense memory as much as the smell of CLP and the unique fragrance of humid southern nights. Proficiency at drill equals discipline, learning to work as a team, and pride. Like Mr. Rousseau below stated; we showed up like a mob of long-haired civilians standing on the yellow footprints and barely walking in step in 90+degree South Carolina June humidity. 13 weeks later we were forged into a unit. Heels thundered as one. I remember the SDI when he would stop calling cadence and let the boot heels driving into the pavement be our rhythm. "Pick 'em up Put 'em down Make that rhythm On the ground. Yo left right You left and right" We had the old M16-A1. We were the last platoon to use them before they switched to the A2. The old plastic handguards were loose, but they made a great SLAP when we did our manual of arms. Damn, I sound like an old man reminiscing.

This is a good looking platoon. Good dress, they seem to hit all their pivots, and they all stayed in step as far as I could tell. Naturally, this is final drill (you can tell by the the Drill Instructors with clip boards and because the DIs are in their alphas). My platoon won final drill at PI (PLT 1017, A Co., 1st BN, graduated 18 Feb, 1983). I hated PI when I was there, but I have to say I am quite nostalgic now! My OCS Platoon also won final drill (1st PLT, C Co., OCC - graduated Aug 17th, 1984). Btw, OCS was much easier than PI - not in the PT standards, of course, but we did not get near the harassment in Quantico that we did in PI. I have been back to the drill fields in both Parris Island (2011) and Quantico (2006) since graduating, and its amazing how you only remember the good times.

Fond memory from 1980 in San Diego... Our guide and squad leaders were getting worked over in the barracks while the rest of us were in the middle of a field day. The DIs took the guide and squad leaders outside to continue the pit call in the dirt. This went on and on. The rest of us could see the butt whooping from inside the barracks. One of our recruits yelled out "this is bullshit!" In unison we all ran outside behind our leaders and locked it up in formation. The DIs yelled "What the F is this?" They dismissed our leaders and proceeded to give us a long beat down in the pit. It was a good day.
