Culturing amphipods outside in a covered large tub or bucket is my recommendation. Add lava rock or gravel, toss in an old sponge filter, add a washed piece of organic vegetables- lettuce works well, and a culture of the buggies. Given a few weeks and your population will explode. Harvest regularly and feel comfortable gut loading them. (Having multiple cultures is recommended as they can crash) no air pump or heater is needed. I don’t think they can survive being frozen outside but they can tolerate a lot!

@@PotooBurd those are great ideas. I’m curious if you actually do this. I used to do it with copepods but then the whole culture was destroyed because it got too hot outside. Where I live now we’ve been having record heat waves so that wouldn’t work for me right now. I am curious if you do do this, how are you able to collect what you need.

Hi Theresa I have always been fascinated by the long horn cowfish? Why did you stop having them in your aquarium? And also the ink they release is toxic was that ever a problem for you?
@cowfishpro

@@MegaMaddydog when my last one passed on, I needed to simplify some things in my life because I was working on my doctorate back then. Part of that process was converting the tank back to freshwater, and I kept fancy goldfish in there for a long time. They were very easy to maintain compared to a saltwater tank. Over the years I did have problems with toxins with cowfish. In fact, I learned more about cowfish than I could find information on, so Iused to write aquarium magazine articles about them. If I ever go back to them, I may do videos and talk about the toxins. Hard experiences, but I learned so much.

@@MegaMaddydog I don’t do anything special. I collect the seeds from the current years pumpkin. Let them dry naturally. After they’ve been cleaned up as much as possible. And then I grab a dozen or so and store them in an envelope. I keep them in a cool dry place and replant them the following year. I’ll probably do a video on it this year since you asked. Other people may want to know as well. Those pumpkins are super huge right now so I will have to do an update video pretty soon.

@@MegaMaddydog anything live added to the tank is a potential risk. This includes macro algae, peppermint shrimp, ghost shrimp, cleaner shrimp, copepods, amphipods, live sand, or live rock. It is a matter of weighing the risk against the longevity of the Seahorses. Usually, if you can order from reliable sources that tend to have clean, cured or cultured offerings, that is best. But it is not always possible. Although it is not a complete answer, I do have some comfort that I have an ultraviolet sterilizer on my aquarium. The cleaner shrimp help with removing parasites from the Seahorses and keeping up sea horse health provides them an immune system that works against potential bacteria or parasites.

I just want to say that I commend you for doing your research before diving in. Too many people think Seahorses are so cute that they must have them without realizing all that has to be done to care for them properly. Then they give up on the poor animals when they can’t sustain the level of care required.

Hi Theresa Just wondering. You got all your erectus from Alyssa so shouldn’t they be already on mysis shrimp. I thought she always feeds them mysis prior to selling them? Are they difficult to get them to eat the frozen mysis?
@cowfishpro
@cowfishpro Ай бұрын
Hi Bonnie. I double checked Alyssa’s site as your question made me wonder. It does say that they are adapted to frozen. I attributed the first seahorses being slow to frozen in my tank because I was still adjusting water conditions. I started them on live adult brine and within a week one started eating frozen. Soon after, the others did too. The new ones have been here a week, but as far as I have seen, they are not yet eating frozen. However, I do have tons of amphipods in the tank. The seahorses snack on that live food all day long. The new babies are eating tons of amphipods, so I think that is distracting them. I don’t find Erectus hard to adapt to frozen. There are various tricks to get them started. Mixing in frozen with live brine, and/or having enough current in the tank so that the frozen is in motion. I think this would make another good video topic. I will add this to my project list. Feel free to reach out with other questions. They help me reflect on my practices.
