Look up tests by lubrication engineers. Synthetic oil quality standards have changed in the last few years the overall #1 and #2 full spectrum range of performance quality from freezing through hot, flow, lubrication, burn off, etc. #1 AMSOIL, #2 Pennsylvania Platform(shocking). They have published their top 100 lists. Mobil 1 has been reformulated and is way down on the list. Many of the oils we once thought were top oils are way down the list. It doesn't mean they won't work well it just means your baby isn't getting the best optimized complete range of coverage. Oh, and as regards to changing oil weights; Do you really think a team of manufacturing engineers of 20 or thirty years know less about what your engine needs then track day boys? Lube engineers don't recommend additives, thicker weights, etc. without documented research data to back their their claims compared to a bunch of kids making claims from rumors they gave heard. This does not mean these guys can't ever be right or invent some new process. But it rarely happens. F1 fan and automotive designer and engineer of 30 years. Wow I didn’t realize Mobil 1 wasn’t as good as they used to be. Thanks for the information. My next oil change I’m doing Motul, not sure where that stacks up on the list haha
@gabrielmarin4593Күн бұрын
Feel free to link said tests because I’ve seen plenty of tests that say the opposite about Mobil 1. Keep in mind they change their formulations a lot. API and EPA requirements change by viscosity. There are now also a million different variations of mobil 1

Changing oil type is stupid. Always stick to the recommended oil.
@StaticGarageUSA3 күн бұрын
@@user-qo2iw5nk2p owners manual states to up the viscosity for spirited driving. 0W20, high oil temps, and a known oil starvation issue on these engines do not equate to a happy engine. If you’re daily driving your GR then 0w20 will be just fine. 5w30 if you abuse your car with high temps
@gabrielmarin4593Күн бұрын
You’re stupid. It’s been well established that manufacturers recommendations can be garbage. They build only to last for the warranty period and to appease the EPA. Very few cars should be running 0w20 but almost every car recommends it just because of the EPA. No car should have the same oil for more than 5000 miles or the same coolant for 150000 miles but again, if they actually recommended the proper maintenance, you would never have to buy a new car again and they’d go out of business. The manufacturers recommendations for this car specifically are way off. There’s tons of proof and failed engines out there. Do some reading instead of talking out of your ass.

7000 mile oil change and people wonder why their shit don’t last
@StaticGarageUSA4 күн бұрын
They claimed to have done the oil change when I bought it. I had purchased it with 7,000 miles. But I wanted to do it regardless since they used a car quest oil filter. The oil was dark so I’m sure they never changed the oil and just swapped the oil filter. But also realize the 0W20 can go 10,000 miles + as recommended by Toyota. But I will be changing it every 4-5,000 with 5w30 full synthetic
@yorkbleyer98034 күн бұрын
Please show or tell me where Toyota suggests changing the oil weight for spirited driving. Or is this statement from the driving public?
@StaticGarageUSA4 күн бұрын
Many people switch to 5w30 especially if driven hard. In the owners manual it says it’s recommended to increase the viscosity of the oil if driven more aggressively. These cars suffer from oil starvation due to the design of the oil pan and due to the 0w20 thinning out on hot days at the track
@vondyhere614 күн бұрын
@StaticGarageUSA Maybe the owners manual says differently on the gen 2, but I have the 2017 face-lift BRZ. Pg. 468 in the owners manual states, "SAE 0W20 is the best choice for fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. IF SAE 0W20 IS NOT AVAILABLE, SAE 5W20 may be used. HOWEVER, IT MUST BE REPLACED WITH SAE 0W20 at the next oil change." Nowhere in that verbage does Subaru recommend the use of a higher viscosity for performance reasons, and nowhere on that page (or section) does it mention using higher viscosity oil. While I don't doubt the possible upsides of using high viscosity oil: the manual does not support that. Furthermore, if you don't follow the manual, your car won't fall under warranty. It would be a damn shame if you voided your warranty and then posted it on the internet as a celebration, so please check your manual because oil does not thin out at higher temps. It becomes more viscous or degrades. (edit, this guy froze or deletes the comments so I can't reply to his blatant misinformation.)
@StaticGarageUSA4 күн бұрын
@ it follows the manual, look up the GR86 owners manual and look through it. I’ll trust the guys who abuse their cars on the track and have blown engines on 0W20 where 5w30 was far superior
@StaticGarageUSA3 күн бұрын
@@vondyhere61 I did not freeze or delete your comment, don’t spread lies. You’re free to your opinion. 0w20 is factory recommended but for track abuse or high RPM driving many many people who track their cars have sworn by increasing the viscosity to 5w30. 0w20 thins easier especially with this engines problem with oil temp and starvation. In the owners manual it states “ an oil with a higher viscosity may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds or under extreme load conditions”. I’m not saying 0w20 is bad, all I’m saying is I chose to run 5w30 full synthetic for peace of mind on abusing this car. If you don’t drive your car hard 0w20 will be better for daily use and fuel economy.
