SC2 with domed jaws is a great piece of kit, fit for purpose, small turnings. I noticed you use carbide scrapers, that may contribute to your perception that the jaws don’t hold well. I only use sharp gouges and skews when using this Chuck and have never had any slippage issues. In fact I love the smooth inner surface as it never marks my work pieces, several times the finished piece is reversed into the jaws and any roughness would be detrimental to my work. Carbides, in my opinion are too aggressive for such delicate turnings. To each his own.
@WoodenItBeNiceАй бұрын
Thanks Bert. I use a mixture of traditional and carbide tools. I'm pleased you like the chuck as well, it is a nice bit of kit. Take care and thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Cheers, Huw

I have made my first Celtic Knot at 45 degrees, that turned out OK. My second one at 50 degrees well a bit flew out. Then I made a checkered pen. That worked out fine.Then I saw your pen. Um, I think I will have to give it a go. Thank you, that is a very nice pen. The only bit I did not like was the hand saw. I think you should get yourself a nice bandsaw. If you have the room. Have a lovely day.
@WoodenItBeNice3 ай бұрын
Hi Alan, Congratulations on your Celtic Knot Pens. Bits can fly out as the do get quite small during turning. I do have a very nice bandsaw but did it this way for one main reason, to show that you don't necessarily need expensive tools to make segmented pens. Thanks for your continued support, really appreciate it. Take care Alan. Cheers, Huw

...I know this is an older video, but luckily I found it...I watched Emma use these powers some time ago but I remember her saying she doesn't like to clear coat over it as it deters some of the effect... I'm happy to see that lacquer is suitable especially on a piece that will be handled often...so thank you for sparing me the experiment ordeal...😅👍 Matt

Glad I found your video: you saved me quite a bit of money since now I'm not buying the SC2 nor the dome jaws. See, Teknatool listened to the complaints and milled their own dome jaws with a groove for better grip right at the factory. No modding needed. I'll buy the Nova Dome Jaws instead. Thanks!

I will try your alternative to a CA finish. It takes me a lot longer to finish a wood pen than an acrylic pen. I do not use CA glue for my brass inserts I prefer to use epoxy. I glue up a batch one day and start pen making the next few days. That way I can work at my own pace. I like the finish. Thank you from a Brit living in Australia.
@WoodenItBeNice5 ай бұрын
Thanks Alan, A very good friend of mine, Andy, told me of this way of finishing a pen and thought I would try it. It works really well and have finished all my pens this way for the last nearly 3 years without any complaints as well. It is a lot quicker than a CA finish as well. Take care Alan and from a wet and windy South Wales ( not the new one lol). Cheers, Huw

Thanks Andy, Lots of people think that an air line will remove all the dust, which as I showed, it doesn't.
