Is the bowl curving upwards like that better than if the curve was going downwards?
@ajkiss5270
@ajkiss5270 11 ай бұрын
My theory is that having it curving upwards does a better job of reflecting the heat outwards toward the people sitting around the fire. Having it curve downward would reflect that heat inward toward the center of the fire pit. Juist a theory. I don't have any data to back it up lol

Those shields curve downwards because they are intended for the tall patio heater in which the heat source is above people's heads. But if the heat source is at ground level from a fire pit it actually might be better to have it upside down as you are currently using it. Heat should deflect outward with a bit stronger force before flowing upward. I'm thinking of building one to try it.

That is really amazing. I think it’s just so cool how we can figure out how to make these types of things. They really help us understand how natural events like this happen.

I hung a high velocity fan from the ceiling blowing upwards for the updraft and used a box fan to get the ground level rotation going. It took a while to get the circulation just right but I used two folding tables to direct the wind just right. I also used a fog machine to make the tornado visible. I attached a hose to the end of the fog machine and put a sheet over the hose to help disperse the fog. The vortex (tornado) sucks the fog through the sheet and results in what you see in the video.

@@user-vz9km3xe9t I used a 1000 watt fog machine that I got from Spirit Halloween a few years ago. I found this one which is very similar on Amazon. www.amazon.com/Machine-Halloween-Decorations-Seasonal-Visions/dp/B07GJVJ26H/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=1000+fog+machine+spirit&qid=1607370409&sprefix=1000+fog+machine+&sr=8-3

I like how it uses just 2 fans instead of 5 or more. What kinds of fans were they?
@vortexkid

I do have some advice from my own experience. Make sure that about a third of the box fan that is rotating the air is blowing in the circulation. Then make sure the box fan on the bottom is on it’s lowest speed setting. Then make sure the fan on the top creating the updraft is on it’s highest speed setting.

I have been looking everywhere for the easiest way to make a tornado. I looked it up for 3 years and then two people gave me the idea you and some other other guy Alex lubbers or something like that but I just want to thank you for posting this video cause it helped me figure out the cheapest and easiest way to create a tornado.

That's awesome! I like how you can see it lifting sand and debris from the bottom. Really shows how the pressures work inside a vortex. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to try to find some instructions on how to rig one of these up.

You should try to measure the wind speed.

You can see the tornado trying to pull up the sheet if you look carefully you can see a bump over where the tornado is.
