To anyone who is unaware, Mandarin cafe used to be a bookshop in the mid 90's. And there's a shop near Heng Lee that rents out video cassette tape. I lived in Gelugor between 92 to 98 before eventually moving back to KL.

I chanced upon this place this morning. Had the CKT and I loved it. Flavor of the CKT I had in the 60's. Only rm 7 for a plate and the portion is almost twice that of that one gets in urban Penang. Going back next weekend for the Tai Lok Mee. Uncle Loo is 72, old school guy, fun to chat with. The laid back atmosphere of Balik Pulau makes the old time taste of the CKT doubly great and the motorcycle shop next to Uncle Loo's shop has a small collection of bikes from the 60's ... that makes the spot close to a time portal to the 60's

The mural painting by the foodcourt is very informative. According to temple Chinese calendar, , it happened during early Qing dynasty. Those years, no camera! The artist described how it was. Even before police barracks. about wet market economy. Not many Malay/Indian costumes. Next time in BM, I would research more on it, as I did in Taiwan which easily dates back to Ming dynasty.
