Fantastic video and fantastic teacher as usual. What about the uneven asymmetrical waveforms of the brasses? Do you tend to fix that in other situations? I guess here is not critical as you don't apply compression (or barely) on those individual tracks, but would you care in other situations when this issue becomes critical on how affects the compressor behavior?
@InTheMixJoeCarrellКүн бұрын
@@PereRevert thank you so much. The only thing I ever do to the individual files may be high Pass filter if I can see that it is needed (that can change the offset), clip gain if needed to balance the section, And every once in a while, flip phase. Isn't Harrison Mixbus just an opensource DAW with awful design that they just took and added their analog emulation to it?
@InTheMixJoeCarrell6 күн бұрын
@@LeChapeauMusic I’m not sure of the opensource question. It does have their own emulations of the Harrison eq, comp, gate, and analog saturation as the basis of every channel. As far as the design, it’s set up like an analog console., which in the easiest and quickest way to get a mix going. So to me it would depend on the goal of the end user. I know Joe Carrell knows what he’s doing. But when I see an instructional video titled “Mixing Drums” or fill in the blank - guitars, vocals - I just have to shake my head. I’ve made records 45 years and I still have never used the same setup on a drum kit twice. Even in a live show, which is a bit of a specialty for me, the drums get changed to fit each song, and sometimes profoundly changed. There’s a lot to learn here but definitely don’t get the wrong idea. How to mix music is about as valid as how to sing. It just makes zero sense to imply any sound is the right one.
@InTheMixJoeCarrell9 күн бұрын
@@artysanmobile well I agree and disagree. The tools and approaches can be very similar repeatedly. Of course the compressor attack and release, equalization, type and amount of effects will all change on a song by song basis…it is also the job of some veteran engineers that have acquired a lot of knowledge and were blessed enough to have great veteran mentors teach us and allow us to watch over their shoulder when we were young and getting started. I luckily stay so busy that I don’t actually have time to teach. However, I feel it’s my responsibility as a very blessed veteran that has reached this level to help inspire and teach others what they have never been lucky enough to experience. Many will simply never get “in the room” but are still hungry to be the best they can be even if it’s only on their own arrangements from their bedroom. Rather than learn from someone who’s never been succesful and is also limited in experience, of course these friends deserve to learn from people that have been living it every day for decades. I take that duty serious and will continue dropping videos so they can not only see drums, vocals, etc, BUT ALSO see it from one song and one genre to another and study what may be different and how I handled it. They may not get to truly study under me the way I did daily for three years as an assistant to a very succesful dude, but I can can give them the next best thing right from their couch in Iowa! Have a good one

Hey, Joe! Gotta question: When working on the acoustic guitars, you mentioned that you wanted that to sound like he's right up front in your face. How do you go about making those decisions during a mix? I feel like i've heard that there is a standard location "protocol," but I feel like that would limit the mix? Is it feeling for you? Ref Tracks? Genuinely, curious. Thanks for the video!
@InTheMixJoeCarrell9 күн бұрын
@@MixingInActionStudios absolutely correct. I don’t go in with preconceived ideas with only one option for anything. I think you are on the right track, listening to the song and deciding how it feels and what we can do to make it feel even more of that. Whatever that is. Whether that’s bright and upfront, dark and distant, dry, heavy reverb, etc. It’s all on the table at the beginning of the mix.

The horns sound SO good even before any processing! For future videos like this, I'd love to see a few photos or video of your recording setup. I know you explained it a bit while you were breaking down the mix, but it's easier to grasp it with a visual aid. Just a thought. I'm not saying you have to film the band during the recording process. I know you're focused on recording, and I know many bands don't want to be filmed anyway. But even just a walk-through of the room before they get there with an explanation of where they'll stand or something. Ftr, your processing did make it really come to life. But even before there was a single plugin, the recording itself was immaculate. Obviously, having great performers who are used to playing together helps too.
