@Network Admin Life: Good afternoon. I'm a Network Admin in the military. Getting out soon. Have a few questions to ask you if you don't mind... Was curious to know what vendor specific routers and switches you've worked on recently out there? I've been trained mostly on Cisco. But have touched Juniper, and Brocade when I went through training initially (years ago lol). Any big changes you've seen between 2020-2024? What are some things you had to adapt to in that time as a Network Admin today? Has AI advancement helped or hurt your career as a Network Admin? I have other questions. But I'll lead up with them
@NetworkAdminLife12 сағат бұрын
First of all thank you for your service in whatever nation's military you have been serving in. I've been solely managing Extreme Networks equipment for the last 15 years or so. The concepts are the same however, only the commands differ. Knowing Cisco is a better bet over all. Many more employers look for Cisco expertise. If you can you may want to add a security certification. It will give you better marketability. However, having managed a switching environment in the military will help immensely as well. God bless!

All of you data centers guys drive me nuts lol. Just today I found out that a dcops guy ran a upc sc jumper to an apc sc panel. And was all confused why his otdr shot ended at 200m. Scope and clean every single time you remove the fiber. If the fiber touches air, clean it. There’s junk floating around everywhere regardless of how good your filtration is. Even when the fiber is plugged in, dust can still encroach on the mating surface.

Our edge closets are VERY dusty. Most of them give me no problem but this one. Yeah, I really need the scope. God bless!

Try using extreme network's command "show port transceiver information detail" to see the optical RX levels, I'm a Cisco bigot so not sure about extreme but in my Cisco world, a greater negative number means less power received, and it appears extreme is much the same. Clean fiber spans that have the lowest signal (greater negative number) and those links that go down unexpectedly may well stop doing that (they may operating close to the limit). You should get an inspection microscope if you don't have one (they are inexpensive) and then you can see the dirt you are cleaning (compare before and after cleaning) but what matters is how many photons that are getting through. Using the error rates is not as reliable because a link that is just barely enough signal to stay up and living on the edge may run error free (until it doesn't). I'm used to seeing normal values of - 2 or - 3 dBm loss (over many kilometers), a dirty cable may be - 5, - 15.5 is the low alarm threshold and at - 16 the link will go down, - 40 is shown when a fiber patch is disconnected. NOTE: In show ports transceiver information output, the Rx/Tx power values shown may be +/- 3dB from the actual value due to the limitation of SFP and the accuracy depends on the SFP vendor. For accurate power measurement, it is recommended to use a power meter but the advantage of reading the likely less accurate values from the SFP is you don't need to disrupt the span. Hope this helps! Take care my friend and God bless.

Have you used other vendors? Most engineers I know who are Cisco shills are simply inexperienced with other vendors and tend to be close minded.

It's OM4 and yes, it's the trunks giving me the issues. I have one other place to check where fibers are cross patched in another rack. God bless!

as a FE i have seen this kind of fault many times. dirty fibers can be the fault, but i always check the connectors inside the patchpanel, many times the tech who built it didnt put in the connector all the way. As mentioned before, a powermeter is an extreme good tool to have when looking for faults. Also faultlocater ( red laser pen).
@alexanderg91066 күн бұрын
That why you call it clean and patch 😅
@NetworkAdminLife5 күн бұрын
I think you're right about the connectors on the back side of the patch panel. I do have the red laser pen. We connect it to the far end of the fiber and then shine it on a piece of paper and use our calibrated mk.1 eyeballs to see if there is a noticeable difference in light levels. Not very scientific. God bless!

I'm starting to learn that. Our fiber installation has been around for a while but seems like we have a few fiber pairs lately that just stopped working as good as they used to. I'll keep at it. Are those clicker cleaners from Amazon good enough? Any other cleaning method you'd recommend? God bless!
@NetworkAdminLife5 күн бұрын
Yeah, and we don't really have the expertise to use one here. It would be hard to justify the expense. God bless!
@jeroenklvr2 күн бұрын
@@NetworkAdminLife you can also use some cleasing cassettes where you can slide the fiber tip on it. This also can work. And if that is not good enough, there is also cleaning alcohol in combination with special fiber cleaning tissues. We have all of these. But the cleaning pen will do the trick most of the time. We also have an scope, powermeter, dwdm powermeter and an otdr to troubleshoot fibers at our campus. But repair work we dont do ourselves unfortunately.

Is it the concept of converting a all physical unit into a logical unit I mean configuring a management inerface to act as master one
@NetworkAdminLife12 күн бұрын
Well, it's more like adding more ports to your existing switch. Each new switch that is added to the stack becomes like an additional module in the existing switch. So think of the original switch as having one slot with 48 network ports, then you add a switch to the stack and now it's a switch with two slots of 48 ports. And the management port stays on the original switch in the stack, also called the "master". God bless!

Can you have full-duplex communication on a single fiber? Or, does that two fibers? (One for send, one for receive)
@BradMottram13 күн бұрын
You can use a single piece of fibre to transmit and receive at Full Duplex. The optics are generally called BiDi (BiDirectional) they transmit and receive on different wavelengths which is why you are able to use a single fibre. BiDi optics come as a matched pair for this reason.
@NetworkAdminLife12 күн бұрын
Yup. What @BradMottram said. We use two fiber optics because they are generally cheaper. I think you can go longer distances when you use two fibers for full duplex. Sounds like have some stellar folks who know more about fiber optics than I do. They can correct me. God bless!

I'm kind of mixed on the whole IP address revealing debate (more broadly, not just this channel). On the one hand, security through obscurity is garbage. On the other hand, there's no reason to make reconnaissance easier for someone who *does* want into your network with mal intent. On the other other hand, it's not that hard to figure out a network layout. There's software built to do just that.

Exactly the battle that goes on in my head. I trust my firewall but on the other hand, I don't trust it. So to err on the side of caution I have to hid a lot more than I would like to. God bless!

Happy New Year. If you have a lot of APs, how do you make sure they don't interfere with each other. Can you use software in the switches or do you have specialized WIFI equipment?
@NetworkAdminLife12 күн бұрын
Great question. These APs will scan the channels it uses to see which ones are in use nearby and how far away neighboring stations are. It will try to select a channel that is not in use. For the 5 gig radio this is fairly easy but for the 2 gig radio we only have a choice of 3 channels. Again, we try to let the AP work out which channel it wants to use but for the 2 gig radio many times it will select a channel that is in use by its neighbor and we have to manually adjust that. Otherwise we get something called co-channel interference. A bad thing. God bless!

I had a situation like the eng. central. plant where it would involve tearing up a road. I ended up using bidi 10gbps optics and got the redundancy - I understand some people don't like them, but I got what I needed. (Yes, my org uses all of the RFC1918 spaces, with the exception of 192.168.0.0/21 to avoid colliding with vpn users' home networks.)

I could not agree more about exposing internal resource addressing, regardless of RFC1918 allocation. We've heard you mention over the years about logging in from home, hence a management VPN being accessible on the DMZ. The whole idea is to make life as difficult as possible and increase the time and effort a nefarious actor would need to learn about the network, if an intrusion was to occur. It's none of our business and I imagine most of us would agree with you. There's the old saying, loose lips sink ships. Carry on my friend and God Bless.
