Did this today. Getting to those three bolts at the front isn’t as bad as you might expect. The tiny ratchet is a must though.

To remove those small 7/16" front bolts, I used a 7/16" 12 point universal combo socket and an extension. 1/4 drive, of course. I had to special order this socket from a tool place, but it worked like a charm. To get as good a seal as possible, I also pounded the oil pans 19 dimpled holes flat with a hammer and a piece of wood.

I have found that the thermostat housing is a great place for a leak to develop, so I do use a good sealant in combination with the gasket. (I use Hylomar Blue, but others are available, as the saying goes). Importantly, because the thermostat studs go straight into the water jacket, leaks can often occur at that point and sneak past the gasket via the studs, so IF they're not rusted in place, remove, clean the threads and apply six or so turns of PTFE tape before replacing; preferably, use new studs and clean the threads out with a tap. The threads in my (1966) cylinder head are 5/16" UNC and I'm pretty sure that all models are, but CHECK before tapping the hole!

I know this is 6 yrs too late, but nowadays '75 -'80 MGB brake masters are avail. for around $50-60, not $200. Good quality aftermkt, made in UK, about to replace one on an '80. Thanks for posting this helpful info Tom!

I tried to remove a oil pan of a 1968 Mgb 1800 and it is impossible to remove the front bolts , 1/4 inch socket fits but there is no space to fit a ratchet, and even I cannot see the bolts just feel them, I think not all the models can do this job.

Yup, you are right. I have a 70 MGB GT and that clearance is maybe 3/4"!!! I had to buy this crazy ratchet set from O'Reilly to get them loose. Then, I had to use an open end box wrench the rest of the way. It took like what seemed an eternity! I did not raise the engine because I was afraid something would break! But I might try raising that 1/2" next time. Good luck!

thanks Tom! if I may add 1 little thing - I found getting at those difficult front bolts was made easier by jacking up the pan itself ... just a tiny bit, like 1/2"; no more (so the motor mounts won't tear). small 1/4" drive ratchet then fits in there, just my 2c worth :)

this is just 1 of many potential MGB windshield area leaks - the rest are addressed by applying thin bead of windshield and glass sealant to the gasket (glass to frame), frame-to-body seal, side post seals, wiper posts, and washer nozzles. bit of work but worth it!

thanks for the idea, but a word of caution ... repeatedly forcing the wing window open beyond 90* causes a bend in the hinge that can eventually break the pin (male portion) and/or wallow out the female part (attached to the frame). I now need to replace the female part on my '72 BGT after 5 yrs of this kind of use. Just my 2c here, thanks from MG Rescue Miami LLC
