Joliet yard is pretty empty these days, they could stage and tie down trains their. Although they could also just route them to Franklin Park use the ihb to Blue Island and then use the GTW to either Markham or to Griffith to go to Kirk. Intermodal don't run via Franklin Park via Franklin Park unless they want to because of a derailment. I think there's trains hiding in places that may not be showing up on atcs because CN is usually busier than what is showing on atcs.
@Railroadfan53836 ай бұрын
That abandoned aggregate facility you were checking out, the tracks are called Avondale yard. The last time I saw it used was in 2009 and there was a rail grinder train sitting in the yard, I'm assuming waiting to be moved somewhere. Before that I think there was a lumber business in the early 2000s that got Center beams. But when they're used to be much more industry along the Harvard Sub in that area decades ago, that's what the yard was primarily used for. Also the Metra train you saw heading engine first into the city was a Heritage Corridor train. They run engine first from Western Avenue coach yard to Union Station to board passengers every weekday.

Awesome video from down in Chicago land! (Or at least I think it's Chicago mainly because almost every train has something cool on it, and also because of the train meet at 6:17 as well)

Is the Chicago Heights area A safe place to sit down and railfan?
@RR19769 ай бұрын
Well... it's a pretty urban type area. No places to like... get out your lawn chair per se. Although Matteson (which is a stone's throw away from there) has that viewing area of the loop. I use ATCS which has GREAT coverage of CN through there. I'm usually not at the same place for more than an hour at a time, cuz I'm driving between Matteson and Chicago Heights depending on what's happening. There is some gang/drug activity in the area, but it's mostly blue collar work'n folk around there. Don't be nosey and no one will bother you.

New lightweight construction is no better. Burn times from time of ignition to fully involved are only a matter of a few minutes. Don't believe me? Look it up here on KZbin.
@RR19762 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily a matter of believing you or not believing you. I do know that newer construction buildings (apartment buildings NOT houses) of this size here in Chicago are way more fire resistant. Now... if we're talking about regular family homes... then yeah... you are correct about that, but at least all new construction homes (at least in cook county) are fire rated and there is a slight more measureable degree of extra safety than houses out in the burbs/sticks. But here I'm talking about structures that are more referred to as buildings (not so much houses) due to how many more people/families they are designed to hold.

On that "electrical connection" on tanker trucks...my first guess would be "ground".
@RR19762 жыл бұрын
Having worked on electrical stuff myself it is somewhat obvious, but with so much metal on metal contact throughout the entire truck assembly seems a little redundant, but... when dealing with flammables, I suppose redundancy is a good thing. Also by ground I did mean that as an electrical connection because ground is an electrical connection term. I do work electrical stuff.

I would like your input on what Railfaners would like to see or help your rail experience at the Park Forest Rail Park. I am sending over some information to the village because I think this park could be a real fan draw. Thank You.
@RR19762 жыл бұрын
Absolutely the number one thing that would help is to take all the trees and high standing vegetation down that obscure all parts of the loop area. As the years trail on and these things grow bigger and bigger you see less and less. Is one of the main reasons why I don't really come here as much as I used to.

@BossSpringsteen694 жыл бұрын
Part of it. The high numeral tracks 47 - 66 are gone. Currently it's not active. They now switch cars in Yard 9. Cars are switched from the opposite end of where humping operations were. All flat switched now. Kicking cars and shoving to rest. Most cars are not kicked into the hump because it's uphill but, Yard 4 the yard directly east is downhill so it's kicked most of the time.

BossSpringsteen69 that makes sense now. They still have a couple in North Platte but are also stored. They’ve been stored there for years as far as I’ve heard.
@BossSpringsteen69 Жыл бұрын
@@GMTX-kg8ep One of the mechanics told me they were sidelined because of fuel leaks and cracked frames. I suspect the units that had cracked frames got scrapped. If others just had fuel leaks they got sold. Just speculation on my part.
@BossSpringsteen69 Жыл бұрын
@@oakcreekrailroadproduction3907 There were a handful still active to my knowledge. Several were already stored in yard nine for years prior to this video. As a railroader they can be a nightmare putting the handbrake on when the electric handbrake motor goes kaput with the 60-80+ hard turns of the hand crank.
