My auld lad was forever doing this. He loved irish music. Everything from the Dubliners to céilí to this and everything in between. He was a massive planxty fan as well.

I miss so much Bob Hoskins, he was such a brilliant actor. What a bore the wife is in this 1st episode. I have a sharp memory of really being engaged in watching this series when in the 1970´s or latest at the beginning of 1980´s it was shown in TV in my native country in Northern Europe. Of course, I hardly understood the essence of the series, but I was utterly captivated by the acting of Bob Hoskins, Cheryl Campbell, Emma Craven and other great actors and actresses, and by the general plot on the level a child can follow. Now, at a mature age, I want to get this series on CD. Little did I know at the time that my life would take me to UK: I am back in my native country, unfortunately, I have always felt an outsider in this country. It certainly is really puzzling how I have early on been very drawn to the British culture, instinctively. I had no such influence in my early or even later surroundings. At the time, there was no internet, mobile phones or similar devices. In my country´s TV there were only two channels. Now, it does not matter, but someone who believes in previous lives, would definitely think I have been English in recent past lifetimes. Now, starting to watch the glorious British acting, directing, script writing and music of the 1970´s. By now, 2024, it´s all changed, no quality.

THE ORIGINAL TV SERIES, WAS BLOCKED FROM SHOWING ON US TV, FOR TEN YEARS. THIS WAS THE DEAL STRUCK BY THE BBC AND THE FILM STUDIO, WHO MADE THE MOVIE VERSION; REASON ? THE HOLLYWOOD FILM WAS POOR, AND BOMBED. THEY KNEW IT WAS, HENCE THAT STUPID( FOR VIEWER'S) DEAL. I BOUGHT THE DVD OF THE FILM VERSION, AND WHILE IT WAS WATCHABLE, THE MUSIC CHOICE WAS NOT GOOD, AND OF COURSE, CERTAIN SCENES AND WORDS, WERE CUT. THEY WANTED TO REACH LARGER AUDIENCES

When I viewed this series as a 14-year-old boy - I missed the beginning - I tuned in to hear -You Couldn't Be Cuter - for a few moments I believed Bob Hoskins was the finest singer I had ever heard - but then I realized these were 1930's recordings and it was Al Bowlly who was the finest singer I ever heard.

So I guess this was born from the banning of instruments by the Brits. It's beautiful and heartbreaking, like all things Irish apparently.

my grandmother was half Irish, her father was an Irishman that died when she was in her teens. she's always told me about him singing under his breath but it was never words, and it would go on and on. she never knew what it was. I think I may have just figured it out 🥺❤️

I think it would be a good investment to purchase a hall to hold these weddings in. You could rent it out for other venue's. It could pay for itself in a short while. You'd be making money on both ends🎉

I'm reading a biography of Dennis Potter, and I now understand how brilliant he was with this. He's always been a hero of mine, based on "Blue Remembered Hills" and his interview with Melvyn Bragg. before he died. Now, as someone in her 70s, I am really "getting it."
