Sharks are part of surfing if you are afraid of sharks then surfing isn’t your thing.

There was a blog a few years ago where a guy flew a drone over the venice beach area and great whites are present almost continuously. Some days not at all but 8 times out of ten they were present and many times they would glide right beneath swimmers who were totally oblivious to their presence.

Whatever possesses people to put themselves in the feeding ground of sharks is beyond me. Mad🤡

The shark turned because he made splashing noises, the number one trigger. Stay still and quiet and most likely it’ll keep on going by.

Having lived in HI for many years, there’s some rules I never break when it comes to the ocean, two of which were red flags in your opening text: 1) avoid the ocean soon after a rain and especially avoid river outlets, as sharks flock to runoffs looking to feed on trash/debris/dead animals washed from inland 2) if no one else is in the water, there’s usually always a very good reason why (sharks, jellyfish, riptides) 3) avoid dawn and dusk, prime feeding hours for the swimming razor blades. Part of being wise around the ocean is also knowing when it’s probably best _not_ to enter it. Glad you made it out safe, that dude definitely looked to be prospecting you.

Well, that was exciting, compared to staying home and watching other people surf on KZbin. I'm the other people.

“It was the fifth Juvenile Great White I've seen in the water in the last two years there, so I wasn't too concerned ...” Check the current statistics! Juvenile GW sharks seem to be MUCH less predictable than adults, and seem to count for MOST attacks by a GW. Next week the “experts” will reach a different conclusion I’m sure but, for now, that seems to be their consensus.

"That's the closest I've ever been to a shark in the water." I very much doubt that. Most people would be shocked -- and many, I'm sure, would be terrified -- to know just how often and how close sharks get to swimmers and surfers, without them ever knowing it. If you've ever gone swimming in any of the traditional shark hot spots (Florida, Outer Banks, New England, Australia, South Africa, etc.), you've probably been within 100 yards or so of at least one decent-sized shark.

Solitary surfing is like solitary caving. Bad. And there’s no reason to still be using a completely black or black at all, wetsuit.

Probably so. It may have been smartest to just bring my feet up on the board. My instinct was to try to catch that wave in but it wasn't close enough to breaking.

Recognized the background so I clicked. I live here…. Looked at the date this video was posted and 9days after this a boogie board was attacked by a great white about a 1/4mile up the coast from this trail. He’s got to be incredibly lucky!

Man that's nothing. I was snorkling in Aruba when I noticed some baby-barracuda's swimming near the surface. Pretending they didn't notice me. They must have been at least 10 cm long.
