I hate crowds when I surf but if there is a shark in the water I’m ok with crowds . Why were you surprised there is a shark in the ocean ?
@davidgwoodward16794 жыл бұрын
I was surprised because I've been surfing that spot for over 20 years and have seen many sharks glide by without the slightest interest in me. This location is a known Great White nursery, all the sharks I have seen have been less than 8 feet, most around 6 feet. None has ever given me a second thought and if they keep on going I've kept on surfing. Prior to this video, I was always on a shortboard which sits about a foot deeper in the water. It doesn't slap the water like the long boards do. Maybe the slapping noise caused this shark to investigate. In any case, I was definitely surprised when this one abruptly turned right at me. (I should mention that we do have very rare adult or sub-adult Great Whites in this stretch of coastline. I haven't seen one, but if I do, I'll be riding the next wave in.)

Born and raised in Hawaii, I’ve encountered a shark several times when I surfed. Just gotta stay calm and hope the faka no bite you. One time I had to swim for canoe to canoe during practice. The canoes where about 100 feet apart and I had to swim to the other one and we’re at the entrance of the bay, the deepest part, and I hop off and as I’m swimming my coach yells there’s a tiger shark next to me, did my best to swim smoothly so it didn’t look like I was a dying or injured sea animal 😂

What a stupid comment. It's not like you see a shark every day. If you did, thousands of people would be dying every day. sh4rk b4it There is a lot of hate for sharks, and certainly, they do attack people (I’m an Aussie, and there are several fatal shark attacks here every year, and that’s excluding the many non-fatal), but the reality is, if those sharks wanted to actually eat the people that they bit, then there would be no actual body to recover. If a shark wanted to eat a person, it’d just fucking eat the person! Sharks are big, and have a massive bite force with hundreds of teeth that do a lot of damage, but if you actually see the shark before it bites you, you’re probably going to be fine, as it already knows you’re not dinner, and more often than not (even though it’s probably little consolation), once it’s taken an investigation bite, it’ll realise you’re way too lean, and far too bony, and it’ll move on...of course, that one bite may remove a limb. But hey, it’s got no hands to see if you’re a seal, or a turtle. Sharks are amazing creatures. We’re killing them in their millions, and they don’t deserve the bad rap.

Also there’s a need of education about sharks guys. The major part of the shark attacks can be avoided in some ways, for example: swim or surf with at least one person if you’re not sure it’s safe, don’t go into the water if it’s dirty because of the rain, when you wait for a wave turn your board in different directions because from the bottom you look like a predator and not like an injured or dead animal in the surface, if there’s one close avoid slapping the water when swimming, the first is not to attract their attention. But if they come, you need to remain calm, you can change their curse by putting your hand on their nose and turn them to other side if not attacking, and if they attack, aim your fingers to their eyes because they are so sensible. Obviously there’s the need of being cold minded and everything.

thats probably true in some cases but the thing about great whites and also other shark species is that they will circle around you for some time before they eventually move in closer and closer on you and suddenly they will bump into you for a test bite. A test bite from a great white can be fatal and is very dangerous. If you see a great white like this surfer did you need to leave the occean in a controlled manner. If he stayed longer its very likely that the shark would eventually take a test bite. Great White Sharks often do surprise attacks but a test bite isnt a surprise.

I was out at Jax Beach FL as a teenager with my brother in the outside break on a pretty big day. While we we sitting on our boards with about 5 other surfers around us, I saw a bouy on a braided line being dragged by something underwater. We all just sat there watching that bouy going through the water coming in our direction. I saw the number on it as it made a first pass. Then it turned. Just at that moment a HUGE dorsal fin surfaced just like the one in all of the Jaws movies, then a pectoral fin about 10 feet behind it. After freezing in absolute horror, I looked left and right to my brother and the rest of the surfers. They had already turned to paddle and leave me. I remember everyone saying "dude, great white, great white." As I turned to depart, the fins went under as it was heading in my direction. The shore was about 300 yards away and I paddled so hard. We were all just thinking to outrun the next guy, but I was last and that bouy was coming for me, so I had a choice. Catch the wave and risk wiping out, or stop and hope it will go right past me, and wish for the best. Everyone was so far ahead and then they caught the first wave in the set leaving alone in the water. At that point, I knew I only had one true choice, to catch the next approaching wave and hopefully outrun it because the bouy was causing drag. So I paddled hard to catch it slashing like crazy in the water. I caught it, but the wave was roo huge to belly ride so I had to stand up. Then I dropped in the face of this huge wave and right at the bottom turn... BAM, I totally ate it. Those were the longest 30 seconds of my life and I prayed like I have never prayer before as I waited for the huge intense bite. After getting knocked around for a bit, I surfaced and gasped for air while trying find my board floating 8 feet away. I finally got to my board and got on. I was totally disoriented and I was looking around for the direction of land, while waiting to be eaten. THANK GOD I caught the white water of another wave and I took it most of the way in. By then, my brother, the 5 guys who were out there and the rest who were in the inside break were all standing on the shore with the lifeguard. Everyone was out of the water and EVERYONE thought it got me. It was like a Jaws movie. Everyone was hugging me and saying, "wow you made it!" So I told my uncle, who was a scientist, that we had seen a great white and he said, "there are no great white's in FL." I told him what we saw and the number on the bouy. My other uncle who was a marine biologist said he read about a group of marine biologists who were tagging Great Whites with numbered bouy's up north before the winter came. We later confirmed it was a GW that had been tagged. Osearch now uses digital tracking and data shows GW's regularly go offshore near Jax beach. Scariest day of my life.

My father was stationed at Camp Pendleton for about 6 yrs, we camped at San Onofre many times. Its an awesome place to dig in the tide pools at low tide. I learned to surf, and body surf there, of course that was 40+ years ago. I read in 2013 I believe, that marine biologist found out that San Onofre is a pupping area for great whites. They stay in the area till they reach maturity, which can be 10-13feet. Juveniles only feed on fish and other sea life, their teeth are not mature enough for larger sea mammals, such as seals.

Sharks are, like many other animals, curious about new or unusual objects or creatures in their environment. Obviously they don't have hands, so the only way they can interact with other things is...by using their mouths. The grand majority of shark bites are simply them trying to figure out what they hell they are looking at. I mean, can you blame them? I've seen some freaky lookin' folks at the beach.

I've been closer...and I didn't have a surfboard. I was snorkeling in Molokini Crater, totally clueless, and had swam off a little by myself, when a tiger shark started following me. He was super casual about it, but when I went left, he went left, when I went straight he went straight. The guy who ran the snorkeling boat spotted him and got on the loud speaker and is like, "Yeah, that's about an 10 footer but he probably won't bother you, you aren't on his menu. Just head towards the boat." I know that feeling when you start moving fast, lol, at any minute expecting a hard tug from under the water. But I just moved quickly and really, really steadily even though my heart was pounding. I was just a mom from Chicago! I didn't know anything about sharks until I saw that one. All the comments I see show how ignorant the average person is regarding shark sightings and attacks in the southern California area. "Why go in their habitat, man?" Literally millions of people swim in local CA beaches every year without having any encounters with sharks. Yes, there are some years where a few people get attacked and unfortunately lose their lives but this is extremely rare. You're infinitely more likely to be killed by a Grizzly Bear while visiting Yellowstone National Park but where is the outrage regarding that? As far as swimming alone - what most of you don't understand is that even when you go out in the water by yourself, usually there are at least a few other people in the water who could summon for help if something did go wrong. The surfing community is tight. This guy in particular was at San Onofre and it does look like there wasn''t anyone else around but most beaches will have at least a handful of people in the water or on the shore.

Fact is Grizzlies and black bears kill humans often, sharks not often kill humans. Now a human will bleed out when bit by a shark, where a bear will actually eat you! The idiot that was living with the grizzlies in AK, knew he would be dead soon enough. If you surf IG you can see juansharks, and he free dives with GW off of Baja, been for years and years, NO cage, and is fine. Not saying you can't get killed by one, but for sure more people die being eaten by bears.
@JoeMillerG7 жыл бұрын
When grizzlies attack people, they get euthanized. There should be prevention measures in place to protect human beings. There are systems that have worked to protect people for years in South Africa and Australia. They should be in place here too. Saying that it's "rare" isn't good enough. Tell that to the 3 kids whose mom was severely injured just the other day.

Well if you factor in the millions of people that are in the So Cal ocean daily, and one lady got bit out of say 100 Million people in just say 1 months time, it's very rare indeed. Again Grizzlies will actually target and consume a human, sharks do NOT do that! The lady that got bit was waiting for her bf to bring back the board she fell off of, had she had a leash on she wouldn't have had a baby seal swimming around her legs trying to hide.. why she was bit.

You aren't addressing my point. A danger being rare (or unintended by the animal) is not justification for ignoring it. We spend more time/effort/money on finding treatments for rare diseases that kill fewer people than sharks. For those three kids, their mom is everything. Not just a rare statistic. Don't you think she is worth protecting? Even if our only means of protecting her takes out a few sharks?

I grew up in Hawaii and this fear never escaped me while surfing. I tried to go to clear water beaches and stay close to other surfers to minimize my chances of getting bit. Scary shit

Dude - you disembarked that board way too early. I would have run it aground before I got off in chest deep water. But then, I’m a chicken🐔

The ocean is so beautiful and I'm always in complete awe at the amazing life going on down there, it's like a whole other planet,that being said, I'm terrified of sharks and so I will respect their home and admire from afar 😍😍😍

I've been flying drones looking for sharks for the past month now and I've grown such a respect for the ocean and the life that's in it. At the end of the day that's their home and we're merely guests in their house.

I petted one once, when I was too young to know what I was dealing with, and Jaws hadn't yet been released. I didn't even know what a Great White was. From the top, he didn't look too bad, but when I paddled up close I saw his body was much bigger than I thought at first. He was at least eight feet long, he had those big black eyes, and his teeth were enormous, but not like a regular shark, but more like four inch brown needles. It was like a mouth full of broken porcelein from an old sink. The top of his body was brown, with white streaks like someone had been finger painting on him, but underneaath he was pure white. He acted like he was asleep, until I reached out and touched him along his back and along the side of his upper fin. Then he flicked his tail and took off like lightning and I never saw him again. Later on I described what I'd seen to a professional underwater photographer, and he said he had no doubt it was a juvenile great white. I treasure that moment, but knowing what I know now, I wouldn't dream of doing it again.

@@mrsx7944 That's because you're trapped in a dull existence, where nothing happens, and nothing ever will, and because you have no imagination, you can't imagine it's different for other people, and so you project. But I assure you, if you're in the ocean every day for years, you will run into many living creatures. Imagine! Living animals in the oceans. Amazing!!!

@@hardinmichael1981 again, too young to know what was dealing with, literally means he didn't know it was a shark, u must be like what, 2 at best? Cause hell i knew what a shark was above 4/5 years old, being movies or anything.. and if still you're too young to know, "not a regular shark teeth", how u compare with other sharks if yoy didn't know anything to begin with, come on

Closest you've ever been to a shark that you're "aware of" lol You do appear to be a potentially delicious looking meal flapping around on the surface like an injured seal ! Mr big tooth could use your board as a toothpick afterwards 🤣
