Lovely set up. I really like the wood stall grills and wood fence. Have you had any major issues with horses chewing on the wood?
@ADifferentWay4 сағат бұрын
So far, I really only had one horse that tended to chew, and that was a case that had to be isolated due to illness. She was here much longer term than the others and got pretty bored. Certainly, anytime you use wood with a long-term resident, you’re likely going to suffer some chewing eventually. However, one of the advantages of the set up is I can easily replace boards as needed, though I have not had to do that so far.

Could a walipini work on the back or side of a garage, using the garage wall as the heat sink? Also, do you think a GHAT system is similar? I'm in the Northeast.
@ADifferentWay5 күн бұрын
Yes, the backside of the garage will work as long as it’s Stone or concrete block or something that actually has thermal mass. However, in order to take advantage of the ground heat, you’ll have to work around the footer for that wall. as far as a GHAT system, it would definitely complement this well and I talk about that in the second video.

Sorry you had to deal with this! Knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently when you built your house? Are there possible and practical ways to avoid getting into a situation like this to begin with?
@ADifferentWay6 күн бұрын
I didn’t build this house, I just bought it and the seller covered up the settling issues. Unfortunately, I was not there to see the house and I trusted the home inspector. He completely missed what should’ve been obvious. What I would’ve done different is buy a plane ticket, fly down and inspect the home myself. I would’ve noticed this issue and not purchased the home.
@patrickcleburneuczjsxpmp95586 күн бұрын
@@ADifferentWay I thought this was the house you built very recently. I just watched a couple more of your videos and realized you bought another house. In any case, do you know if the house with the settling issues wasn't built properly to begin with, whether anything could have been done differently from the beginning to prevent the settling issues from ever having developed? Thank you for the very helpful and informative video!
@ADifferentWay2 күн бұрын
The deeper we’ve gotten into the work on this house, the more we realized that the house was definitely not built properly or soundly. The builder took a lot of shortcuts, did not establish a solid foundation to begin with, and that is particularly important when you consider the home was built on a sandy slope. To make matters worse, when issues around the foundation began to develop many years ago, the owner of the home did not give the issues proper attention. He would also take shortcuts to simply cover up the problem, until eventually, he simply sold the home.

The morning sun does come from the east. I would have to review the video again to see what you’re referring to. The location of the tap hole does not have to be in relation to the sun. However, trees that see the sun more, can flow on days when shaded trees will not (based on temp).

You installed your stove pipe incorrectly. The male end or crimped end always points downward towards the stove. That way creosote will run down inside the pipe and not on the outside. Also, you will never get puffs of smoke coming out where the pipes meet when the male crimped end points downward.

In most cases you are correct, however, this is double walled pipe, the inside is as you describe, but the outside layer looks the opposite.

Your Vego garden beds are sitting on grass-- I assume you all weed eat around the edges of the garden beds? Does the metal get dinged up? Thank you!
@ADifferentWay20 күн бұрын
This is not my long-term intention, however, for now, you are correct. We do use a trimmer, and there is a risk of at least dinging up the paint. I am not at all worried about the quality of the metal, as it is tough, but I figure I can sand and touch up paint at the end of the season. On the very back side, which can’t be seen in the video, I planted a row-bed of sweet potatoes, and laid fabric and mulch right up to the vego garden bed. No trimming needed back there. Additionally, in areas where I might need to get too close for comfort with the trimmer, , we just pull by hand, which helps reduce contact. It worked for this season. I’ll probably make a few adjustments for next year.

@ADifferentWay23 күн бұрын
We did not make it weathertight, as we wanted to encourage airflow through the spaces between boards. We did put guides on the ground to prevent the barn doors from blowing around in the wind, but it’s not sealed at all from air. It does stay nice and dry inside, however!

Nice info, thanks. Maybe you could extend the inflow pipe under the water level of the first barrel to prevent wind. I don't see the need to run the water line under the weight of the barrels or under dirt for that matter. Can shut off the water supply to to the line and let it drip dry if freezing is possible.
@imtiazali935Ай бұрын
Just a thought. After you spread the fabric, pull extra from the tail gate so that it folds and over laps to half of the bed. So when you crank it you offload half of the load at a time. You may have to put a piece of pipe where you fold it so it don't kink or crease the fabric. If you don't understand message me so I can show you.

I would recommend reaching out to the company again and ensuring their answer is true and that they understood your question. If you read about the Chinese greenhouse you will be surprised about all its advantage especially if your about the latitude 40. higher north you are and less interesting is the Walipini greenhouse since the angle of the sun is lower and do not illuminate the ground of the walipini as well as if the ground was at the same level as the beginning of the glazing. A really good technique that does not require any energy to operate is: 1. Dig a trench of 6-8 feet deep inside the greenhouse perimeter; 2. put horizontal R20 insulation panels all around (this will prevent the cold from the ground outside from cooling the soil inside the greenhouse, which benefits from the warmth of the soil deep down. 3. place the excavated soil back into the trench to hold the panels in place, and compact the soil well at every foot if possible. You will end up with a warm soil perfect for the plants roots even if the air is under the freezing point.
