For fabrics which perhaps have too much drape or stretch to work with easily, a good heavy starch does wonders! It washes out easily unlike interfacing, and is much more affordable. Vano liquid starch can be used straight from the bottle, either sprayed on or by dipping the fabric in and squeezing out excess. Then iron (with a press cloth) to a paper-like stiffness which handles like a dream for fine patchwork! If you hate ironing but have some time, you can also simply soak the fabric in starch then smooth it onto any smooth wall, just like wallpaper. It will dry overnight, then you can remove it with no damage to itself or the wall whatsoever. It may work against a large window to get a smoother appearance. I would not try it (without testing) against a flocked wallpaper, but normal painted walls are fine.

This was a wonderful tutorial. I have been using men shirts for fabric for about 10 years now, but your method is more organized and focused, making it much faster and easier to keep track of all the pieces. I like how you make 10 inch squares 4 inch squares and 5 inch strips out of each shirt. Thank you so much!

Thanks for this video. I would like to know if I can also use dresses and skirts for fabric to make my quilts?
@TIME4MEworkshops5 жыл бұрын
Yes of course. You can use any fabric you want. Just make sure it's stable and doesn't stretch. If it does you can apply a layer of light iron-on interfacing to the back before cutting out the squares.

@@TIME4MEworkshops Do you know if there is anything at a thrift store that would be good to use as batting?
@TIME4MEworkshops5 жыл бұрын
Mary Carpenter I'm in the UK so don't know if our charity shops are similar to your thrift stores. There are always old blankets available but `I would say that if you're going to put a lot of work into your quilt top, it really is worth getting a proper batting. Blankets and curtain interlining could be used but you won't get the warmth and drape you will get from batting.
@stitchengramie5 жыл бұрын
@@TIME4MEworkshops Thanks! With the money I save from buying items from a thrift store for making the quilt. I can afford buying the batting. Never thought of it this till now.

Much easier to place the zipper on top of the fabric by doing it from the wrong side of the fabric. Also, instead of sewing just the two ends and leaving a gap, turn the regular stitch to basting, place the zipper on top, sew, then remove the basting stitches. Way faster and easier.
@tanjowil97436 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial. I would never had thought of tacking but do a basting stitch instead.

hi Mrs price, I am creating a quilt from some shirts of a friend who lost her husband recently. you made several sized blocks from the shirts...now I need to know how to put it together. I am using 16 shirts. would u suggest I quilt as I go, use interfacing...etc. I am traveling uncharted waters here. please help with suggestions or videos of where to go from here. this is an act of love that needs to have a good outcome. thanks so much. sewawesome316

I am trying to do the same thing but for my dad out of my grandpas old clothes. I've done Halloween costumes without patterns and I know I didn't use the right technique but it was just for Halloween. I'm so nervous to start cutting into these clothes or start sewing and mess it up since you have to be precise with quilts or it will throw the whole pattern off. Most videos I've seen just go right into cutting unused fabric for quilts and this was the first to actually show how to cut into the shirt and about how many shirts you would need. I'm excited and nervous to get started in my project and glad I found this video and a link to her website.
@Sharon-pb7so7 жыл бұрын
sewawesome 316... With 16 shirts you will have enough fabric to do at least 2 big quilts. I buy men's dress shirts at the thrift store and make quilts out of them. Bonnie Hunter has a tutorial called... Deboning men's shirts. Watch that for how to take a shirt apart quickly.

Hi Ms Price, I love watching you just getting so much out of a shirt and so much out of what looks like "Scraps you would discard". I want to get into quilting. The first step I have done is to wash the old clothes that I want to use in making my first (1st) quilt. I see that you have a number of rulers, a rotary cutter & also (what looks like a cutting table). Is it expensive to start quilting?
@TIME4MEworkshops9 жыл бұрын
Lsu2012Bama Doesn't have to be expensive. Just a 12" ruler, a rotary cutter and a cutting mat you can use on any table. Good luck!

These videos are in a series of six and are all available from my Time4me website. They are designed to show the 6 stages of making a cushion using 6 useful techniques. These are 1. Ribbon Ties, 2. Adding piping, 3. Adding a frill, 4. Adding a button Closure. 5. Adding a zip Closure, 6. Adding the back. So the final stage where the piping is enclosed by the back, stitched and then turned right way out to reveal the piping, is covered in video 6. Sorry for the confusion!
@TIME4MEworkshops11 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment Cathie. I normally cut my bias strips 1 1/2" wide. Piping cord is really a matter of choice but if you like a chunky binding that will be a feature, I would use 4 or 5 mm. The piping will indeed be on the inside until you turn it the cushion the right way out when it will then be on the outside. But this video doesn't show you attaching the back of the cushion.
@CathieH8811 жыл бұрын
I'm with you, maybe she went around around with the back or front on top of that piping.
@CathieH8811 жыл бұрын
Great, but how wide did you cut your bias strip and how many mms is the piping cord. Is there a general rule about this.

I'm sure this would've been super, if one could have seen what was being done. But I have a couple of bits of constructive criticism: Next time, I would consider using a contrasting colour of thread for this tutorial, like red or black, so that the stitching can be seen by the viewer. And more close-up videography would be helpful. As it is, just when you're hoping to get a close look at what Margo's done, the camera pulls back, and you still can't see. Great technique, though. I'll try it!
