Sikhs were a martial race. They fought gallantly in Anglo-Sikh wars. British had a habit of including martial races into their army. If we look at the Sikh history, we find armed struggle as part of a common Sikh's religious life . So their religious spirit of bravery with discipline was suitable for any modern army. Not only British, Independent Indian Army also benefited from Sikh bravery. Muslims carry similar spirit of holy war or Jihad in their religious teachings.No wonder, British used them as an important component of their army. But it doesn't mean that Hindus were not fit to join army. Although large number of non-martial races belonged to Hindus, but still you can find millions of Hindus who would join army and achieve perfect results. We must not forget that Hindu soldiers played pivotal role in British victories in most of their early nineteenth century battles. Even in Great wars, lion's share of gallantry awards was won by Hindu regiments. Prof Peter is right in his opinion that majority of troops were loyal to their officers. For them, military life and fulfillment of orders were more important than any other motivation of the time. I think British officers did a great job in maintaining their troops allegiance to their command. They would engage troops in things like sports, military songs, inter-regiment competitions so that their mind was not diverted from their duties. Definitely, decolonisation of India was an event which eclipsed the sacrifices of those soldiers. Because they fought for British Empire and Empire disintegrated soon after their victories. It doesn’t mean that the British forgot those soldiers. British government launched various scheme of claims even after decolonisation of India so that their loyalists could fill the forms and get some financial relief.

The martial race concept only came about after the indian uprising. The groups what supported the british became martial races and the ones that didn't where labelled weak or not strong enough.
@asimnawaz9256Күн бұрын
No. You must have built this narrative from Wikipedia. In reality, things were different. So far as War of Independence 1857 is concerned, number of martial tribes fought on British side whereas many sections of same tribes were in opposite camp. Rajputs were main tribe which was divided. Similarly, only some Marathas were on British side. So this narrative is problematic. They might have observed the performance of different tribes under their command, that could have become a prime motive for their profiling or categorization of different tribes.

@@asimnawaz9256 It seems like you googled my point and the first site that showed up was Wikipedia and you just presumed thats where i got my information from. It was actually my history teacher from many years ago that told us about this point. The bengal part of the british indian military was held in high esteem until they didn't back the british in the uprising unlike the punjabi and pathaans who fully backed the british. I don't recall no concept of martial races in recruitment of the british indian army until after the uprising . Please correct me if I an wrong about this.
@asimnawaz9256Күн бұрын
@sajO5754 I am not denying your hint about timing of that theory. But polarisation of 1857 didn't decide who was Martial and who was not. As I mentioned earlier, martial races were fighting for both sides. Anglo-Gurkha war was fought in early 19th century. British commanders were so impressed with Gurkha's fighting spirit that they decided to raise a Gurkha unit right in the middle of war. I am not saying that you just rely on Google. I said you could have based your narrative from Google. Yes. Bengal Army was a a vital part of British East India Force but British were already smelling resentment and sedition in Bengal Native Infantry. Actually Bengali people are known for their volatile temper. They rebelled against Nawab Sirajuddulah, then East India Company, then British Raj ( in 1905-11 and 1944- INA), and then against Pakistan in 1971.Bengal uprising has been a continuous source of tension for various governments.

The question about the feeling etc conflict independence etc. All crap. These soldiers were from poor families. That didn't happen with them. Money was more important. Simple. Even today in kashmir the no of boys who turn for recruitment is immense. Throughout the intense anti India feelings in the valley that was the case. In punjab too. Poverty and politics ideology do nit go hand in hand.

There was no Pakistan. Pakistan was born after both world wars in 1947 when part of India (now Pakistan) was given to Muslims. The Muslims demanded a country. based on religion. But yes people from Indian region now Pakistan fought bravely in WWs. Also British never had whole of India under their control. You will be surprised to know that Maratha Empire controlled a lot more India then British eve did. As for India not being a country I don't even know where to start explaining it.Best for you to research. All I can say here is India existed even before the birth of Jesus Christ.

The theory of martial races was constructed by the British to sow discord among various groups by actively promoting some of them such as the Sikhs and Rajputs at the expense of the others. In fact, the whole army was organized along these groupings.

Well we can argue as much as we want on this but history speaks for itself forget about world wars let’s go behind it let’s see who were those who dare to challenge invaders, it was sikhs or Rajputs. Maratha’s were far in south but they still came all the way to Delhi and Punjab maybe they lost war but still they dare to come and fight. You like it or don’t like it but reality can’t be hide . So according to you gotkha’s are not special anyone can be like them ? These men are built differently brother you have to search their history before making assumptions.

Me from Pakistan. I was looking for many questions for years, like the composition of army units in the Gallipoli campaign, I just found them. Thanks I want to add one thing please. Sikhs and Punjabi Muslims both remain loyal to the British in 1857 great mutiny. It was their loyalty, which made the British hold their ground. The reason was that Punjabi Muslims and Sikhs were rivals to each other. In Moguls era, the Punjabi Muslims were de facto ruling elites of the Punjab. When Delhi sultanate weakened, Sikhs made their own rule in Punjab , and Muslims were suppressed heavily. The British crushed the Sikhs in two anglo Sikh wars, with the help of their Bengali and Madrasi sepoys. When these Bengali sepoys mutinied 50 years later, the Sikhs helped the British in reprisal. The Punjabi Muslims helped the Brit becz they feared, if the Brit loses, they again will be ruled by Sikhs. They preferred British rule than the Sikh Raj.

Utter rubbish, there were large number of muslims in the ranjits sikhs army!!!!! Sikhs never suppressed muslims, it was ALWAYS the other way round!!!!! The sikhs were less than 10% back then, but they were organised and martial simply because they had to be in order to survive.

@sandyg8041 😅😂 Nothing against Sikh valour. They're a valourous people. But non participation in 1857 rebellion was the driving force to promote the faux racial theory. It was the people of the plains that rose in rebellion who were crushed with the aid of Muslim and Sikh troops. Sikhs were also deployed in China by the British to help crush the Boxer rebellion there. Remember the Gurkhas are short statured. It's never about the size of the dog in the fight, it's always about the fight in the dog.
