@CryptoGuide21 сағат бұрын
Yea I will probably do that in the next little while. The short summary is that *many* folk screw up BIP39 passphrase, particularly with Trezor as it is on by default and folk don't understand what it means when they enter a password into the hidden wallet prompt in Trezor Suite. The main issue with folk who intentionally use a passphrase is when people have just memorized it, rather than write it down. I do also get a bunch of folk who have typos in 12 word seeds. Then there are folk who have got funds stuck in either crap/new/nonstandard wallets or apps.

Good job! There is no safe boot here like the jade diy? So it is less safe than the jade diy?
@CryptoGuideКүн бұрын
It's just like the Trezor One in that the release bootloader locks the system down the first time it runs, so has the same type of tamper resistance and trust model in terms of running official firmware, etc. (Same as Trezor, Coldcard, basically anything running an STM32 MCU) It's less secure than Jade in the sense that the encrypted private keys still live on the device and are decrypted using only your PIN, whereas with Jade, your device needs some data from the blind oracle (Which needs your PIN) to be able to decrypt the keystore.

If I try to test my 25th word passphrase with a temporary pin and it’s wrong do I have multiple tries?
@CryptoGuide2 күн бұрын
It's just the same as the normal pin, basically if you get three incorrect guesses then it will wipe the Ledger. That said, if you know your non-passphrase PIN, you can just use that to unlock it and it will reset the pin-fail counter back so that you get another three tries.

Sipeed MaixCube is all in one already packed and supports Krux. It would be great if Jade firmware could be modified to power it on
@CryptoGuide21 сағат бұрын
Basically Jade runs on ESP32 and is basically running on bare metal, not something like MicroPhython. It would actually be easier to port Krux to ESP32 or STM32, as Krux runs on MicroPython and this makes it easier to move Krux to other platforms that also support MicroPython.

Hi, I find your videos very helpful. However I am a bit confused about open source firmware of the Coldcard, in your document from your website it says that coldcard is not 'open source firmware license' is that a good or bad thing? Are our coins safe in that wallet because of that or not? Or as long aswe can verify our transaction on the blockchain, that is ok? Please explain me like a 10 year old. Thank you so much :)
@CryptoGuide6 күн бұрын
Coldcard isn't open source. The source can be viewed on their GitHub, but other developers and companies can't build on it, so there is no incentive for actual technical people to be working on their codebase. (Which is very different from something like Trezor) So basically Coldcard doesn't have the full benefit of distributed review that something like Trezor has...
@Mantas-cl3zy6 күн бұрын
@@CryptoGuide I have read your comparison document and I see that you have ranked Coldcard and keystone 3 pro at Top 3 safest of security score of 95. I am long term bitcoin only holder. I am experienced hardware wallet user, currently using trezor safe 3, which you ranked at 76 security points. Am i correct to assume that despite Coldcard not fully open source is a safe wallet for bitcoin only holding? Because i can see my sats on blockchain..? My goal is the safest device for long term Btc hold. I take full responsibility for risk. I am grown man and not tik tok type of kid :) Specifically my intuition said Coldcard Q + Sparrow is the best choice or am i wrong? Thank you so much for your answer and taking your precious time answering my questions :)
@CryptoGuide5 күн бұрын
Coldcard is probably fine in the same way that Ledger is probably fine... If you look at the feature breakdown, you will see that the difference in score between something like the Coldcard and something like the Safe3 is related to multisig functionality and offline-by-default operation. "Best" will really come down to how you plan to use it and your technical ability, so if you are a less technical user and want something similar to a Coldcard then something like the Foundation Passport or Keystone offer similar functionality but are much more accessible. That said, if you are prepared for the learning curve, then Coldcard Q is fine too.

Thank you for your info: I have a question about the attack scenario on a DIY jade without secure boot. Even if the attacker grabs physically the device and flashes a malicious firmware, how can he extract the private key that it is behind the "pin server" virtual secure element? I understand that after 3 failed pin the part of the encryption key stored on the pin server is deleted on the server side.
@CryptoGuide9 күн бұрын
Basically the state/memory of the device is preserved when you flash new firmware over the top, so if you don' thave secure boot and flash encryption, malicious firmware could simply wait until after you have unlocked the device and then retain/leak them after that.
@drew72_ita9 күн бұрын
@@CryptoGuide Understood thanks, so in this scenario the maliciously flashed device must be returned to an unwitting owner.
@CryptoGuide9 күн бұрын
Not really, malware on your PC could remotely flash it as soon as you connect it over USB (Or at any time after) and then facilitate the exfil of all the private key material. Reflashing it would take less than 60 seconds and the only thing you would see on the screen is the device would reboot unexpectedly.
