Great video! I found it really helpful seeing the different variations. Keeping track of the root note has even helping me to finally start seeing the notes on the fretboard. Thanks for posting this!

Your videos are really good - I love the way you explain things, and bring up "bits" that make learning about music interesting and fun. I was jotting down the two stacked tetrachords and looking at the modes of the Major scale, and found that two other modes (Dorian Minor and Phrygian) have stacked tetrachords as well. Of the modes of the Major scale, only those three (Major, Dorian and Phrygian) have stacked tetrachords. I'm sure you already knew that, just tossing it out there...

Sure. Work with each of the four patterns and make sure you have each one learned across a string pair. Drill them until you don’t have to think anymore (and change the Root note regularly). Then try the links to the upper Tetrachord to play the full scale. Start with one octave then try linking two (and beyond). Always look out for the changing patterns across strings 3 and 2.

Ry, is the diagonal pentatonics also explainable with tetrachords?
@Rynaylorguitar9 күн бұрын
The pentatonic comes from the major scale, so there are some similarities. The pentatonic scales eliminate two notes to avoid the (potentially problematic) half step in the major scale.
@Phoboss329 күн бұрын
@@Rynaylorguitar How could the half steps be potentially problematic? Could you elaborate more on this? Maybe because students forget often about the half step between BC and EF notes or is there more?
@Rynaylorguitar9 күн бұрын
@@Phoboss32 If you’re using a C major pentatonic to solo over a C major chord you want to avoid notes that rub or clash with the chord tones. F is a half step from E (the third of the chord) B is a half step from C (the Root). So they would both be avoid notes over a C chord. Hope that helps.
@Phoboss329 күн бұрын
@@Rynaylorguitar Got it! And this clash of nearby notes is because they tend to be dissonant to each other. So, this is why it’s easier to learn and play pentatonics in a more musical way. I had a huge Aha-Moment! Thank you, Ry!

Great video... now when I can understand it all at once in under a nanosecond, then I might be able to make music 😅. I'm an engineer, is there some kind of workbook to get this stuff in my head faster, I'm thinking like my calculus text book, problems and practices.

Thank you I think this will help me. I have understood what a triad is since I was in high school in piano class. I am now 34, and trying to figure out how to memorize them on a fretboard. Specifically, I am trying to memorize each interval of each of the inversions on every string set. I know the shapes, but I can't pick out the intervals. It results in me playing the wrong inversions sometimes, because I have just memorized the shapes and not learned how to apply them correctly. Ultimately, I am trying to learn to think in intervals altogether, but I want to start with wrapping my head around triads, then arpeggios. I am pretty comfortable with scales, but I want to be able to visualize the fretboard from multiple angles. I really think learning intervals will help me connect everything together.
