Gurl, this video is singlehandedly the reason I got into RISD. I was in a similar spot as you - halfway through high school with nothing to show for it art-wise. But knowing someone else was in a similar spot yet still managed to get there was really inspiring !! So thanks so much for making this video <3

I’m a senior currently creating my portfolio to submit to various different art schools, I was feeling very unmotivated and unsure of the strength of my skill compared to others my age. However I fail to realize the beauty and creativity that comes with genuine enjoyment of creation rather than photo realism. Seeing this portfolio full of gorgeous abstract pieces helped me tons.

Hey, I think I had similar experience, I used to love art until I got into highschool. I was really pre occupied into school organizations, school works and others that I made very little progress on my art (I did made art but most of them are a collaboration project I directed). Now I really want to get into art school to persue product design but barely had and art suppliment to submit this december. Should I rush making my art porto or just not submit any?

Omg, I litterly watch porfolio videos, because after highschool I want to apply to Art University, but I haven't gone to any art schools ect. Altho some say that Im skillful in art, thats not enough, I applied to some courses that that University organizes, but still I was scared how can I make my pirfolio in 2 years and make it stand out between all those pro artist kids who have been drawing from an early age. You gave me hope, thank you really much!

I have to say, I am going through almost the same exact thing you went through. I suddenly fell in love with art again during my sophomore year, but I had done so much for academics and other areas that I felt obliged to not completely switch what I want to do. But I decided to take the risk and make a portfolio to try for art school. You really inspired me to keep going and putting in my best effort because I sometimes feel like I can't do it because I started so late. Thank you for sharing this and I wish you best of luck on your journey :)

This video was so motivating for me. The story you told in the beginning of the video is exactly what I’m going through, like to a T. I’m a sophomore, and finally admitted to myself that I don’t like the sport I’m playing and never did. But simply continued it out of obligation and people always saying I have talent. This video is exactly what I need

thank you so much for this video!! i'm about to graduate on college here in brazil and i've been considering getting a graphic design mfa overseas, so risd is, like, one of the best options for me :') although i really want to persuit a career on the illustration field, i find a lot of comfort in graphic design, so seeing how you combined two of my favorite "worlds" was really really helpful. your work is amazing and so is your kind soul! <3

hello, thanks for great informative video. i just want to ask a few questions: 1. How did you come up with these ideas, where did you take inspiration from? 2. what we need in a good portfolio? 3. can i prepare portfolios in 3 months for foundation programs, what are your recommendations for applying foundation programms? 4. Can we also show them our works that we did in our sketchbooks? should i go over the requirements when it comes to number of portfolios? should i submit as much as i want if they are so beautiful? Thanks in advance...

I want to start saying thank you. This video was SO inspiring. I’m aiming to pursuit a master degree in Fine Art since art has always been something important on my life but never something that o believed I could do. My graduation is fairly unrelated to art so I’m scared of not been “good enough” to enter the school that I want. Listening to your saying that you pieces were done in 6 months, your explanations, your inspirations… everything was incredible, besides the great music and editing. Thank you for doing this, I’m sure many others are inspired by that like me 💖

@@buggygutz yay thats great, it's good to hear that you're content where you are! Just a few questions: What specific things are you grateful about in terms of being a student at scad? Would those things be difficult to have through risd? it Also seems like you have a lot of opportunities being at scad; is that true? (I just took a quick look at their website so I thought I’d ask) Lastly, in terms of your portfolio, was scad easier to curate your portfolio to compared to RISD?

Listening to your journey really reassured me that I'm doing the right thing. Just like you, I always loved art and wanted to be an artist. And my mom was fine with that until I got to highschool and she realized I *actually* to go into art and that it wasn't just a little kid's dream. She convinced me that I was too smart to not go into a STEM field (engineering), that artists are doomed to poverty, and that I would start enjoying engineering because I would be good at it. In my senior year, I did a dual enrollment program at a community college where I took the first year courses required for an engineering associate's and I did the worst I've ever done in school for a variety of reasons. But I think the biggest reason was that my heart wasn't in it. Even so, I kept telling myself "just a couple more years," "you'll make lots of money," "you like math, so you'll like engineering." It wasn't until recently, when I had the worst suicidal thoughts I've ever had that I realized *something* had to change. I felt that I had nothing to look forward to in life and that I would never be happy. But then I remembered... I'm an artist. And as soon as I entertained the idea of dropping everything I was doing and going back to art, I started feeling a prickle of hope again. And I want to chase that feeling to wherever it will take me. And if that's a dumb decision, so be it. I'm tired of feeling apathetic about my life. I'm terrified and ecstatic at the same time. I'm not sure what I should do next, but I think that art school is probably a good place to start. I didn't mean to share my whole life story, but I saw a lot of myself in you and that felt so comforting. Thank you.

from what I've seen, RISD likes to see a lot of different mediums. You can probably put digital art in your portfolio, but don't just do one thing. I would try to contact someone at RISD or look at their website to make sure.

the idea of "enjoying rather than enduring" is something I have struggled with rationalizing and justifying. thinking that it was wrong and too hasty off me to quit a part of my life that I had been doing for years and put so much effort in, having everyone judge me and view me as a quiter made me really feel really guilty. but something about hearing what I've been wanting put so simply comforted me, so thank you. also, your art is so beautiful!!

At first i was surprised that ur video already have ads considering ur channel only have almost 400 subs. And then i was hooked by how u tell ur story on the artworld. So inspiring for me, by the way, i am a very very very late bloomer in art(i'm an accounting graduate and also had religious education, i don't have any art school education, already 61 yrs old, i love art but experienced much procrastination). Thank you so much for this video, now i know why youtube decided to put ads on this inspite of 300+ subs. I definitely subscribed on your channel, again thank u for the inspirations. 😊👍 (I am not sure if I'm your 399th or 400th subscriber bec. when i viewed this video i checked that ur channel has 398subs but with ads at the start of the vid already)

Omg I have never related more to someone. I also got into RISD but for the year of 2021 and I also dropped everything I was doing Junior year of highschool in order to pursue my art. I had been doing the IB program for three years at that point and I dropped it. Similar to what you said everyone advised against it but I knew what was right for me. Also, I went through a really traumatic mental breakdown between 8th grade to 10th grade and it was hell to get through. I didn't enjoy art for so long and I lost myself in the process. There are still remnants that effect me to this day. I am really happy to see that I am not the only one that experienced this journey!! Thank you for this!

i wanna give you a tight hug! a person with ture intentions gets something which they want. i learnt that watching from you. i'm in 2nd year of junior high school, and just 2 months ago i decided i want to pursue art for sure. since i'm a perfectionist(i know i shouldn't label myself), i tend to match the standards of other people's artworks. but all the RISD porfolio's i saw, the work is so individual and personal to them and it somehow frightens me. i'm taking a year off next year and try my best to blossom more. since i'm an international student, i'm kinda taken aback because of college fees, but that shouldn't stop me from trying!!!!
@aerthnaut
@aerthnaut 3 жыл бұрын
this is such a sweet comment. i totally understand what being a perfectionist feels like, it can be hard to just give yourself space to breathe and grow without the weight of expectations. but we have to try and let the people we look up to be sources of inspiration rather than comparison! it’s wonderful that you are taking a year off, i hope you find fulfillment and continue nurturing your enthusiasm! 💜
