the idea of "enjoying rather than enduring" is something I have struggled with rationalizing and justifying. thinking that it was wrong and too hasty off me to quit a part of my life that I had been doing for years and put so much effort in, having everyone judge me and view me as a quiter made me really feel really guilty. but something about hearing what I've been wanting put so simply comforted me, so thank you. also, your art is so beautiful!!

Listening to your journey really reassured me that I'm doing the right thing. Just like you, I always loved art and wanted to be an artist. And my mom was fine with that until I got to highschool and she realized I *actually* to go into art and that it wasn't just a little kid's dream. She convinced me that I was too smart to not go into a STEM field (engineering), that artists are doomed to poverty, and that I would start enjoying engineering because I would be good at it. In my senior year, I did a dual enrollment program at a community college where I took the first year courses required for an engineering associate's and I did the worst I've ever done in school for a variety of reasons. But I think the biggest reason was that my heart wasn't in it. Even so, I kept telling myself "just a couple more years," "you'll make lots of money," "you like math, so you'll like engineering." It wasn't until recently, when I had the worst suicidal thoughts I've ever had that I realized *something* had to change. I felt that I had nothing to look forward to in life and that I would never be happy. But then I remembered... I'm an artist. And as soon as I entertained the idea of dropping everything I was doing and going back to art, I started feeling a prickle of hope again. And I want to chase that feeling to wherever it will take me. And if that's a dumb decision, so be it. I'm tired of feeling apathetic about my life. I'm terrified and ecstatic at the same time. I'm not sure what I should do next, but I think that art school is probably a good place to start. I didn't mean to share my whole life story, but I saw a lot of myself in you and that felt so comforting. Thank you.

But knowing someone else was in a similar spot yet still managed to get there was really inspiring !! So thanks so much for making this video

I’m a senior currently creating my portfolio to submit to various different art schools, I was feeling very unmotivated and unsure of the strength of my skill compared to others my age. However I fail to realize the beauty and creativity that comes with genuine enjoyment of creation rather than photo realism. Seeing this portfolio full of gorgeous abstract pieces helped me tons.

i wanna give you a tight hug! a person with ture intentions gets something which they want. i learnt that watching from you. i'm in 2nd year of junior high school, and just 2 months ago i decided i want to pursue art for sure. since i'm a perfectionist(i know i shouldn't label myself), i tend to match the standards of other people's artworks. but all the RISD porfolio's i saw, the work is so individual and personal to them and it somehow frightens me. i'm taking a year off next year and try my best to blossom more. since i'm an international student, i'm kinda taken aback because of college fees, but that shouldn't stop me from trying!!!!
@aerthnaut3 жыл бұрын
this is such a sweet comment. i totally understand what being a perfectionist feels like, it can be hard to just give yourself space to breathe and grow without the weight of expectations. but we have to try and let the people we look up to be sources of inspiration rather than comparison! it’s wonderful that you are taking a year off, i hope you find fulfillment and continue nurturing your enthusiasm! 💜

I’m aiming to pursuit a master degree in Fine Art since art has always been something important on my life but never something that o believed I could do. My graduation is fairly unrelated to art so I’m scared of not been “good enough” to enter the school that I want. Thank you for doing this, I’m sure many others are inspired by that like me 💖

Omg I have never related more to someone. I also got into RISD but for the year of 2021 and I also dropped everything I was doing Junior year of highschool in order to pursue my art. I had been doing the IB program for three years at that point and I dropped it. Similar to what you said everyone advised against it but I knew what was right for me. Also, I went through a really traumatic mental breakdown between 8th grade to 10th grade and it was hell to get through. I didn't enjoy art for so long and I lost myself in the process. There are still remnants that effect me to this day. I am really happy to see that I am not the only one that experienced this journey!! Thank you for this!
