how did you take the body off without a car lift.

I lifted the back with a motor hoist, for the front I made a wooden A frame with an electric hoist, I used two wooden beams under the floor rafters against the side rails for support, to these beams I attached the hoisting cables, I routed the cables through the ventilation hatch out to the hoist, in my case it was just an empty shell to hoist.

weten een van jullie waar in een ruitje voor een spitfire/seafire kan laten maken? of kan dat eenvoudig zelf?
@TheLM1961 Жыл бұрын
@rutgerokkie4245 Жыл бұрын
@TheLM1961 Жыл бұрын

This might be such a dumb question and if that’s the case pls excuse my ignorance. Could one build the chassis from scratch in aluminum? Has anyone attempted this?
@TheLM1961 Жыл бұрын
.As far as I know no one has done or tried that, of course it is possible, but aluminum takes a lot of know-how to do it right, it can easily lead to disaster, for example the fatigue resistance is very low, therefore it breaks quickly if it has to flex a lot, also electrolysis is a big problem so you have to isolate everything from other metals otherwise it will rot faster than steel. I think the cons outweigh the pros when it comes to chassis in my view. Greetings
@michaelmatejka1489 Жыл бұрын
@@TheLM1961 Thanks for the detailed reply. I did not have electrolysis on my radar, which would probably be pretty severe where the c-profiles bolt to the front subframe. The work you have done is absolutely awesome. A full body off chassis is the only way to go (if you have the time and space). I am inspired by your work and want to do the same (still looking for the space to do it). I am also looking what can be approved upon. I have a couple of ideas. (1) aluminum, which you have made a great argument against (2) increasing the size of the profiles by 2 inches. That would raise the whole coach, but also give you more clearance in the front (3) stretch the wheelbase by 2-3 ft. Might sound crazy, but Boeing engineers worked on the body and aircraft makers do that all the time. Thanks for all your pioneering work….remarkable!

Wow! Where to begin. That’s amazing. I will need to watch this dozens of times to absorb all that is going on here. The frame work caught my eye as did the interior/ dash build. If you don’t mind, … 1. What kind of steel was used for the frame rails and bogie box? 2. What was the subfloor material? Really great work. Thanks for posting this.
@TheLM19612 жыл бұрын
1. the original frame rails are mild steel, which is not special, i used s235 steel, which is also not special, most commonly used structural steel, i looked here in the netherlands to see what comes closest in dimensions to the original, what has resulted in a rail that is 3mm higher and a wall thickness 1.5mm thicker. 2. for the subfloor I used what we call here in the Netherlands Betonplex (concrete plywood) it is plywood with a hard smooth top layer, it is widely used here for concrete formwork, and also as floors for trailers. Thanks for the nice comment,

Is this a stock layout or your custom take on it? i can tell the brakes are aftermarket, but i'm just starting to learn about these beautiful works of engineering
@TheLM19612 жыл бұрын
Yes, the hubs and brakes are Fiat Ducato, the cylinder tank is 200L LPG in the back under a double bed, then the waste water tank is original and in its original place, between the rear wheels is normally two petrol tanks, in this case now an extra waste water tank (for washing machine) and a battery box, then comes the 130L clean water tank, which is normally in the back under the seat, then the front tank 80L reserve patrol tank, engine and exhausts are standard, the original radiator is replaced by an Audi RS6 radiator, which has a greater cooling capacity .
@lattitude012 жыл бұрын
@@TheLM1961 neat, very informative. may i ask how you removed the shell from the frame, i would assume some form of overhead gantry?

in my case, I took everything out so it was an empty shell, from the back of the cockpit all the way to the back, I placed two wooden beams under the floor trusses against the side rails, attached the lifting cables to these wooden beams and then through the ventilation hatches in the roof to the hoist. as it was an empty shell the unsupported overhanging cockpit was no problem.

I'm quite eager to see this project reach completion, and see what choices you took along the way. I've been dreaming myself with undertaking a similar project but if I do go ahead I will take a different approach. I will probably pick the GMC and a crashed tesla, and do an electric conversion. I'll transplant all the tesla hardware, including seats, door locks dashboard window regulators, etc into the GMC. Will need alot of fabrication but I think it is doable. for the interior I may go with a system that rises the ceiling, something like an accordion conception to get some extra space, for instance by putting the bead in the "top floor" there will be more space for a decent bathroom and maybe even a dishwasher and a cloth washer.
@TheLM19612 жыл бұрын
It is certainly something I am considering doing in the future, but for now the charging infrastructure at the campsite is not sufficient in my opinion, Jim Bounds, wants to reproduce the GMC again with this Tesla drivetrain, it is certainly something for the future!

@@TheLM1961 Indeed, I agree with you. I was thinking of using a very efficient diesel generator with thin, film like solar panels for those ocasions, but the diesel generator sort of goes against the goal. Anyway, thanks for these videos you've posted. I'll try to find more about Jim Bounds.
