I do believe that some people are talented, and talent influences the rate in which someone can improve IF they put the time, effort and dedicated practice. My siblings are talented in drawing and make good art ever since they were young. And being the one who doesn't have the talent for it, I was jealous and wanted to be able to do the same, but my drawings were just really bad and my sister often made fun of me for how I often tried to copy others artwork and failed because it looks so bad. I was just thankful that I didn't get discouraged because I was kinda dumb to understand any form of insult aside from ones personally directed at me and not what I make. Fast forward to the present, I can confidently say that (although it's not god-tier or anything) my art is better than anything my siblings could make now because I spent years trying to improve. While they had the talent for it, they never bothered practicing or getting better so they were stuck with whatever they could make in the past. But since they are talented, I believe if they had also put the effort then they could have also achieved what I am able to make in way less than half the time it took me to reach my level.

so you need to spray pastel paintings if you frame them?

Fixative can make your drawing darken with age. I found this out the hard way. One of my favorite drawings is really dark now. I'm glad I have a photo of the original.
Most importantly do not use Winsor & Newton professional spray it absolutely Ruins your artwork and leaves shinny blotches!. I've used all other brands on my charcoal and graphite drawings with no problems Windsor & Newton was recommended to me at my local art store with a new employee and this is the 2nd piece of artwork it has ruined on me and I do know how to use them I've been drawing and painting for 50 years. DO NOT USE WINDSOR NEWTON SPRAY!!!

It's really up to you. If I were you, I would give it a very light fix and definitely have it framed behind glass as pastel is very delicate. Best of luck

Any reason why this woman can't be Countess Jacquline of Bavaria/Hainaut/low countries/ she married a noble Frank of Borselle in 1434, rumours she married him in secret a year or 2 before without the knowlege of Philip the Good and Philip put him in prison then released him. Jacquline's father died of a mysterious dog bite and her uncle was poisoned in the Hague. The woman in the portrait is wearing gold bands and the man silver. suggesting she is more important, as would be in this case. Gold and silver tinctures refer to heraldry/guilds/military ect. Frank of Borselle was a member of 2 chivalric orders the golden fleece and knights of St Anthony, Jacquline was a member of the Order of St Anthony like her forebears. Jacquline died in 1436 and Frank outlived her for some considerable time and never remarried. She did have a stillborn plantagenet child with Duke Humpfrey of Gloucester. Could this painting be a legal record of her handing all her lands to Philip the Good ? Philip said he would only allow the marriage to Frank if she did this.

I just bought it, based on their videos and comments like yours. Thanks! Did my first try at it yesterday--a half-assed try--and it turned out better than anything I've ever drawn before. I'm getting ready to draw the Mona Lisa today just to hang it on the refrigerator door and surprise my wife.

Nice technique ideas! And I understand the usefulness of such techniques, especially when likeness is not optional My question is this though: is there a risk that by using a crutch to handle the proportions and positioning of the various facial features, we never actually develop the artistic skills and experience needed to one day be able to get rid of the crutch? I'm just wondering if those skills still grow in the background even if we use tracing paper or your printed-model-superimposed method. Of course I'm also aware that the skills don't magically grow just by repeatedly "falling down" and failing. TBH I don't really know what's the best way to get those skills to grow. I'm wondering what your opinion is on that.

Hi, I think this tutorial is great! I just have two questions. 1. Do you find a glossy laminate is better than a matte one (it looks like you use a glossy finish laminate)? 2. And do you think a 3mm thick laminate would be better than a 5mm so the colors of the photo will looks as accurate thru the laminate as possible?

Nice video and good suggestions. I do have one suggestion, use a bowl or plate to shape the brushes and not your hand. Skin is porous and whatever is in that brush is being pushed into the skin. I have painted for decades and with very good hygiene habits, but have developed allergies to pigment, resins and solvents. Remember your body is absorbing whatever touches your skin or whatever is contaminating the air in your studio.

I want to let you know how much this video means to me. I’m doing a memorial piece for 5 close losses I’ve had this year. Brandon lake has a song called graves into gardens, it says “you turn mourning to dancing, ash into beauty, graves into gardens” my grandmother loved the azaleas her ashes are scattered by her favorite bush, I’m doing a work make with charcoal (ash(not her ash, wood ash))but wasn’t sure how to make it all stay nice and pretty, my schools art teacher recommended workable fixative, but I had to clue where to start. My art skill are in 3D art and auditory art, so this is different for me. You’ve given me the courage to continue this project. Thank you so very much.

As I said in the video, (albeit unclearly) - I usually don't fix my dry media artworks unless I'm posting them or feel it needs a little protection. If it's going into a frame, I might use a bit, but it'll always need glass in front. If the frame has acrylic glass, it most definitely should be sprayed due to the static charge of the acrylic glass attracting any small particles.

I feel like It's challenging to plot things and confusing do you have resources that can help as I practice. I'm good at free hand landscapes but never plotted any art always just did it by eye never had any real teachers😅
@tommullinerart9 ай бұрын
This method IS doing it by eye. Instead, you're correctly plotting the key points of the objects before drawing in the lines. This is just another way to draw that I developed further from the way drawing is taught in Ateliers - among the myriad of ways to draw accurately (some more accurate than others). It's good to try different methods and pick and choose the ones you like or manage with the best. Then select the method best suited to your subject matter.
