@@metalgearsolid241 @metalgearsolid241 I'm not sure. People have used this technique on several models of epson workforce. If your cartridge has the little carbon tab, then it should work. If you go to the website in the description it explains how to find and remove the tab (scroll to the bottom of the web page)

So far it's not working on my 7100. maybe they fixed that on later models knowing so many were doing this.

This even worked from a European XP 7100 33 and 33XL to a U.S. 410 and 410XL after you swap the chips (keep your empty cartridges and swap chips from those - it may even work vice versa)

Wish this still worked, but sadly it doesn't. I'm sure not updating the firmware on my other Epson printer.

Epson did a firmware update and then I got the error message saying ink was empty. After calling Epson and going to customer complaints, they admitted that the "security" update also checks to see if you are using 3rd party ink. He said to but Epson ink ( twice the price)and it will work. I told them that they have no right to dictate what ink I put in. It is my printer and up to me. I understand that the warranty will be void and I take that chance. It is like buying a Ford truck and they do a software update which means it will not start unless you but the most expensive gas from a Ford dealer. I do not know how this is even legal. His reply is that the manual says to only use Epson ink.

Hi,i had epson SC T3160X(ink tank) A1 plotter. after request maintenance box replacement n i replace with new one.the display not recognized n still showing replece maintenence box. I try in on or off positions still the same, also turn of power cord expecting hang is off ....still not working. Do you have tips for this issue.. Many thanks..

I was going to try the hack of scratching off the carbon but the cartridges I use don't have it. I use ones from EZ Ink for the Epson WF 645. I guess I'll have to try the firmware reset.

Hmmm. Cool hack. Unfortunately, my brand FastInk doesn't seem to have a "something" to scratch off. Really mad that I hit the update firmware button. Wish there was a quick way to undo my update.

Yes you can downgrade the firmware. Instructions on how to do it are available here on youtube.

Hi my chip doesn't look like it has a silver rectangle in looks more like letters and numbers, is that what I should scrape?

It's a black line drawn by magic marker. Take acetone and qtip. My ink is 100% EPSON INK BUT THEY COVERED IT UP WITH LINE & STICKERS

It worked perfectly for me. Unfortunately my printer did an automatic update (forgot to cancel it) and this tip no longer works ... Do you have a solution?

Hi, sorry to hear that the new update wrecked things. I don't know of any other solution. This was the only one I found when researching how to get around their update scam.

Sorry to hear that. The only advice I can give is to make sure to scrape the strip away thoroughly in the middle or it won't work. The first time I tried I didn't scrape away enough and it failed, then I scratched more off and that did the trick. Dude this totally worked for my Epson XP-7100! After months of frustration, I did it and it worked first try! I used an air spray can to get rid of any debris before installing. Thank you for these videos

This makes no sense. A company sells you a "carbon line" style cartridge and expects you to scratch it off to work? I don't think so.

Don't be silly. Nobody should *have* to do this but Epson are a bunch of scumbags who introduced a firmware update to prevent the use of non-Epson ink cartridges. This is a work-around. The manufacturer of the cartridge did not expect people to have to do this or they probably would have designed it differently.

Hi. I am trying to find the small silver strip on my cartridge (I have an Epson XP-4100 which uses Cartridge 212) . But I am not sure where it is. Do you have any idea how to solve this problem in a different Epson/Cartridge? Thank you!!

Hi, look for a small silver strip on the corner or edge of the chip. Just a little silver/grey rectangle. It's not always in the same place. The brand I use has it in the top right corner. Make sure to scrape it away thoroughly in the middle or it won't work. The first time I tried I didn't scrape away enough and it failed, then I scratched more off and that did the trick. This worked Thank You so much Scott Charles! Anyone doing this, it takes time so if you install and it doesn't work, that means you need to use your knife and keep scratching until the board turns a little white. That way, you know you are doing it correctly! I also wiped my knife with a napkin periodically. Good luck!
