Peanut butter is a staple of childhood. PB&J is peanut butter and jelly. That’s a common way to eat it. Yes, we spread it on bread like butter. It’s also good on bananas and apples as a snack. One of our favorite candies is Reese’s peanut butter cups. That’s a chocolate cup filled with peanut butter. In the last couple of decades, some American children have developed an allergy to peanuts so it’s not permitted in schools like it used to be. Airlines stopped serving peanut snacks on flights. It can kill the allergic. But it turns out that you can “immunize” children if you give them peanut butter when they’re just learning to eat solid food. No one knows what caused the high numbers of peanut allergies in the first place but it might be due to overparenting and not letting kids go outside and get a little dirty. Who knew.

"Tell me if there are 51 state in some years": States in the US are like the Laender in Deutschland. We can make more, but once here, they stay. In addition to the normal acquiring new territory through purchase, war, or skullduggery justified by manifest destiny, we have three times added more states. At the beginning of the US, both New York and New Hampshire claimed to own a piece of land to the north. They both granted homesteads there. So, when some people paid for a new farm, they went there and found it already occupied. Since both families had paid different states for the land, and both had documents to prove it, this caused much strife. Therefore, the contested land became the new state of Vermont and New York and New Hampshire had to give everyone's money back. Also, when the country was created, the State of Virginia was much bigger than other states. Almost immediately, the County of Kentucky asked if they could please split off and become a different state, which they did. At the beginning of the American Civil War, Virginia broke from the US and joined the Confederacy, but northwest Virginia wanted to stay. So, they broke from Virginia and became the state of West Virginia. The US fought against Virginia, but not West Virginia (after we "liberated" it. After the war, both states were part of the United States. The Civil War is interesting because the Southern States voted to leave the US, but there is nothing in US law that allows a state to leave. So, they just said, "OK, we're done with you." The Northern States said, "no takesbacksies" and sent an army to prove it. In the north, this is known as "The Civil War" were some states fought against other states. In the South, this is known as "The War of Northern Aggression" where they were just trying to get on with their lives and the North sent an army to beat them up. The US is like organized crime: "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!" Here's an interesting question: If Saarland voted to return to France, would Germany let them?

Also, as an East Tennessean, we have an alarm system for in case the TVA has a nuclear reactor breakdown or similar; the alarm sirens have a ‘Test Alarm’ on the first Wednesday of each month at Noon. One of those alarms is right on the other side of the Interstate from my house. I’ve never actually been within 200 yards when it goes off though, so it was never too jarring, but I can hear it from inside even with TV on, so I do know it’s very loud!

18:33 This is when the Maryland Four Hundred held the line and protected the American retreat. Almost all of them were killed or captured, but they prevented the British from successfully pursuing the Continental Army. Few know the name now, but their legacy continues. Washington himself declared, "“Good God, what brave fellows I must this day lose" while he observed my neighbors pressing against the British lines. The quality and bravery of the Maryland regiments earned Maryland its nickname, "the Old Line State." May we soon prove ourselves proper heirs to their glory.

Samuel adams is a brand of mainstream craft beer in the US that had a rather popular advertising run in the 2000s. it's named after the second president, but for younger audiences, samuel adams would probably be known from the beer. The ads would have men ordering classy drinks, with the lat man having a sam adams beer, to sell the idea that the beer is classy and good. Dave Chappelle, a famous african american comedian made a skit making fun of this, saying that there is "sam jackson" beer, after samuel L jackson, the actor, who is known for his bombastic and violent performances: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnzTe5Jmrs14q8k

The joke a chicken has it's pecker on it's head means because it's beak pecks pecks pecks at the ground when it eats. The banana between a man's legs is also called a pecker. Why, I don't know, it just is. Probably because when a mans got his pants down it's as obvious as a door handle (yup, there it is). (or a zipper halfway down). But get a German drunk they're as funny and crazzy as a Mexican. Probably why Germans and Mexicans got along so well, especially South Texas. Conjunto Musica, savez?

So our right to bear arms does not come out of the boston massacre. It actually comes from the english bill of rights, which is from the english civil war in the 1600s. England functioned on a system of militias. To enforce this, from the 1100s, the english had what was called the "assize of armes" (this means like: the counting of weapons), which was a law where people making a certain amount of money would be legally required to own certain weapons. Like if you held a "knights fee" (like you held big lands able to support a horse), you had to have like a lance, a helmet, a suit of maille and a horse. If you were just a freeman, you might just be required to have a spear and a gambeson, etc. And so on unto smaller wealth. There was even a requirement for rich men, that if they owned more weapons than they could use, they'd be forced to give them poorer men who lived under their control. This was to make sure that all of the english people would be armed for war or law enforcement if the need comes up. The way war worked was through the militia system. Like if your land was being invaded, all men had arms, and so reported to the lord and were diveded up into units and made fit for war. And for like law enforcement, there was the "hue and cry" where the sherriff (which in medieval times was like what you germans called the village "schultz") would declare that a crime had been committed, and he'd enlist (or as we say today "deputize") men from the community to hunt down the community...and since all men per the assize of arms had weapons, they'd be able to enforce the law with their sherriff. Anyway, in the 1600s, Charles II was a catholic king. In trying to fight against the protestant heretics, the king made it illegal for protestants to own arms. To this ends, the protestants, who unfortunately are the majority of the english, could not defend themselves neither in war, nor even against simple crime. Like they couldn't do the basic functions of local government against criminals! So when the perfidious english usurped their king finally, they made it a right in the english bill of rights that PROTESTANT englishment have the right to keep and bear arms. When we british who became americans finally made this our country, we took this same law and kinda reconfigured it to fit with the fact that A) we don't have a state church (maryland is mary-land, originally a catholic state) and B) we don't have a monarch or parliament (the original law had wording that implied parliament exists). So the idea of having a right to bear arms is just something that comes from our english history, but sorta deviated to deal with the fact that we're not a monarchy, and we're not state-protestants. We're religiously tolerant, and a republic, and so our law lets all men for the sake of the free state of the republic, have arms in it's defense.

In "das ist gut": oompah music is a type of music related to polka that's known in america from south german and yiddish immigrants, but may not be a type of music that's familiar in germany, or might be called differently in german. Iirc, it's a south german style of music with instruments like tuba and drums that has a sound that's like "oom" (on the tuba) and then "pah" (on the drum), hence the name. Something like danny elfman's showtunes takes influence from it, but I believe the original form of this music is like bavarian folk music or something. The joke you did not understand was making fun of hitler's aktion T4, which was a nazi policy. Hitler killed mentally ill and disabled people with this plan as a way of boosting germany's economic efficiency. The show said "euthanasia for the mentally feeble", which means "kill people who are mentally disabled". "Mentally feeble" is a kinda old fashioned way of referring to the mentally disabled, which is probably being used to throw back to the fact that nazis are "old fashioned" compared to today. For many jokes also, several years ago, some germans made scat bondage porno and it proliferated on the internet, and so became a stereotype for how americans think about your sexuality. To this end, you germans are thought of as deriving sexual pleasure from shit and humiliation. Hence the joke in mueeslix (lol for the extra e) and with the german plunger. I think you may have also missed the entendre. Franz Gutentag is really the nazi -- hans schlechtnacht. mr. goodday vs. herr badnight. Herbert's german pronunciation was probably a bit bad for you to rightly hear since I don't think the actor speaks german. short e an i sometimes merge in english, so schlecht might sound like schlicht or something else with an i like schlimm etc. Your video was really funny and I like the cultural and linguistic discourse that things like this bring out. To this, I'll sub. Keep it up that I might watch more interesting and fun cultural interchanges lol.

The "American Sandwich" is a thing in the US. The thing about the US is that Europeans often don't realize how big it is. There are places in the US where it is common to put french fries on a sandwich, but it's mostly a regional thing. The same is true of a lot of "American sauces" which are often an actual thing, but only common in very specific regions. This can be as small an area as part of a specific state. The thing a lot of Europe doesn't get is that the US is roughly the size of the entirety of Europe. Europe is only slightly larger and they are both around 10m sq km. A US state is roughly equivalent to an entire EU country. Europe is more densely populated in general as well. The most densely populated areas are along our coasts in general. There is an overall "American Culture" but there is also a similar, though not quite as extreme, level of cultural diversity here. Depending on where you are in the US you will see very different food being eaten just like you would in different parts of Europe. Though, yes. A lot of this is very much "faux American" and not things we actually eat.
