Dehumidifiers are great when humidity is very high & you definitely notice the difference. You don't pour water into refrigerator. There is a water hookup in back of refrigerator that attaches to piping inside kitchen wall that is connected to house's water pipes. When system is turned on inside refrigerator, it automatically cools drinking water & makes ice cubes as they are needed. (It sort of works like a water faucet in a sink but it has automatic sensors to determined if it needs to open valve so water can flow in to be chilled or frozen to make more ice.) We have top loading & front loading washing machines & dryers. Neither style is harder or easier. People buy style they like best or suits their laundry room. I've have found it harder to use front loading washers because I have to bend over to put clothes in & out & it is hard to see inside to make sure you got all clothes out of it. Yes, advantages and disadvantages. Front loaders use less water/energy and it doesn't treat your clothes like you are beating them with a rock; clothes last longer. On the other side, you need a floor that doesn't mind a puddle, time to time. Get too much detergent, or have the filter plug, and you'll be on hands and knees draining the tub thru that 1/4" rubber tube into a skillet, emptying that into a bucket; a 30+ minute project. Then there's the horrid sewer-like stench if you don't open the door w/in a few hours after washing is complete, if you accidentally close the door, and/or don't run it thru an occasional "tub clean" cycle. If your clothes were still in the washer, it takes 2 or 3 washings to get the bacteria out of them.

As a dry cleaner, I do a lot of clothes cleaning. The best use of a dryer is to infuse air into the fibers of a clothing, especially cottons. After I wash my loads, I place them into the dryer for about five minutes on low heat. Then I take them out to air dry. Those five minutes fluff up the fibers, and this softens the clothing. If you hang dry your clothes straight from the washer, they tend to get hard and stiff with just hanging them. Also with the dryer, after they dry on the hanger you most times don't need use an iron.

A dehumidifier was ESSENTIAL when I had a condo in a 1900's Victorian house directly on the coast in New Jersey. Each of our units were individually air conditioned, but the entrance, hallways and stairwells were not. The humidity build-up in the summer would cause the wallpaper to peel and get moldy.
@wittsullivan81302 ай бұрын
There are parts of America that are so humid, you can use a specialized dehumidifier that specifically collects distilled water for drinking or other uses. I had problems with mildew in my bedroom closet. I bought a powerless dehumidifier that was just a perforated bag full of silica beads, like they use in diapers and packets. It had a bag on the bottom that collected a half gallon of water in days. 50% humidity is considered a "dry day" where I live (north Mississippi). 80 degrees F and 80+ humidity is the norm outside. Most central heat and air systems have air filters so dust and stuff won't collect in the machinery and dirty up the ductwork and make it inefficient or cause fires. Most houses with central heat and air have sealed windows that can't be opened, so there is less dust indoors. You can only open the doors in most houses. Back in the day, attic fans were common where you could open specific windows and turn on the attic fan and it would suck the air in making for a very comfortable summer evening and night. We had window screens to keep bugs and debris out, of course. Water dispensers in refrigerators are slow to dispense water because the water goes through a filter and then through a cooler. One of of my friends blew our minds with an on-demand water tap in their sink. The previous owner was a prominent doctor, he had all sorts of high end stuff installed when he remodeled his kitchen, including an on demand water heater in the wall next to his kitchen sink. You get scalding hot water immediately for instant coffee, tea, or cocoa straight out of the tap. If you're going to boil water for cooking, you can fill your pot from it to reduce the time it takes to boil water on the stove. Usually on demand water heaters are used in showers very far away from your water heater so you don't waste water flushing out the cold water. They also have remote controlled ceiling fans with lights that screw into a light socket. Instead of hiring an electrician and/or a carpenter to reinforce their ceiling for the weight of a fan, they just replaced the light bulb with a lightweight, but fast and powerful ceiling fan/LED light combo. You can also dim it or change the colors and light values. Before I started making instant coffee, I rarely drank it at home. I actually used my coffee maker to brew tea, using tea bags in the basket instead of ground coffee. Now I use a kettle to heat up the water on the stove, making a cup of coffee and a pitcher of tea at the same time, using a portion of the water in my cup and the rest in my pitcher. When I cools, I add some lemon juice and add water to make an even two quarts of tea. Most top loading washing machines have steel lids, not plexiglas. I have no idea why there's a need for clear lids in the door, unless you're super scared your kids or pets will take a ride. :)

He has actually since purchased a smaller refrigerator that better fits the space in his kitchen. Don't worry, it's still large by European standards. The USA has both top load and front load washing machines. What's nice about a top loading machine is that you don't have to crouch down to remove items from it. You stand in front and reach down instead. Top load machines often have that agitator column in them but some do not. In the US, you can get both front loader and top loader washing machines. It is personal preference. I'd suspect most people probably have front loaders, but lots of people have top loaders. I think top loaders technically wash your cloths better because of the agitator they have that front loaders do not have. They really do a fantastic job of agitating your cloths, letting them scrub against themselves much more effectively than a front loader where the cloths are agitated by just tumbling. The ice in the refrigerator is made internally by the refrigerator itself. The fridge is hooked to the water supply so has its own water. The fridge will have a filter in it as well, so the chilled water and the ice is filtered. My tap water is _fine_ but I drink almost exclusively the water from the fridge because it is filtered, cold, and I just prefer the crisper taste over my Texas tap water.

In the USA, you can buy top or front load washing mashines and front load dryers. They're quite functional. We've only had the front loaders available to us for about 20 years. I'm not sure where the confusion is about a top loader for a washing mashine. The water comes from the top, you put in your soap, and it does its thing then you take the clothes out and put them in the dryer. The newer top loader machines actually spin those clothes almost completely dry so drying time is cut down a lot.
@blatherskitenoirАй бұрын
The dehumidifier he shows seems small to me. It looks like the type meant for a single room. This sort is usually placed in a garage, shed, pantry, or storage room to prevent mold in that single space. The smaller ones have to be manually emptied of the water they collect every few days. There are much larger ones which can handle an entire basement or attic, which can be connected to a drain so they automatically empty. And there are whole-house ones which are built into the house's HVAC system. Fridges with ice and water dispensers are connected to the house water supply. There is a mechanism in the freezer which automatically fills an ice cube mold with water, waits for it to freeze, and then tips the ice into a storage bin. The ice maker can tell the when the bin is full and will pause on making more ice cubes until some are used. When you press your cup under the dispenser, ice cubes from the bin drop into your cup. The bin has a little turn arm which stirs the ice cubes and moves them forwards to be dispensed. Fridge ice dispensers almost always have options for crushing the ice. You can select if you would like whole cubes, partially crushed, or fully crushed ice, and the dispenser will crush or not crush the ice cubes as they come out. The water does tend to take a while to fill a cup. As you can see in the video, the stream is very small. The water which comes out is chilled to much colder than tap water, and it is filtered. Fridges with ice and water dispensers are considered "fancy" and they are often mentioned on forums where people discuss being poor as a child. It is a very common story for someone to go to their "rich" friend's house as a child, see the fridge with the water dispenser, and view it as an enviable sign of wealth. Another common practice is for young families to have a basic fridge while they're starting out, then upgrade to a fancy fridge with a water dispenser, and the basic fridge is then moved to the garage and becomes the "garage fridge" which is most often used to keep beer and drinks cold. The very first washing machines were developed in the US and were top-loading. Americans became used to this style and have the space for them, so they continue to be made and are very popular. The reasons for their popularity other than familiarity are: they hold a considerably higher amount of laundry per load, are often mechanical (through technology-enhanced ones exist, and one is shown in the video) which means they are extremely durable (they are estimated to last 5-10 years longer than a front load machine), very easy to maintain and fix, and they tend to be $200-300 cheaper than a roughly equivalent side-load version. They also do not get the mold issues that side load washers get. It's unusual in the US to see someone hanging laundry out to dry. I've only ever seen it in Amish country. You might air dry a few delicate pieces of clothing, but most everything will be dried in a dryer. It's fast, it's cheap, and it's less work. Plus the humidity in some regions means you could be waiting forever for your laundry to dry if it is hung up. Having the dryer as a separate machine enables it to, again, be a purely mechanical machine. Which makes it more durable and last longer than a machine with complicated computer elements. Electricity is much cheaper in the US, so the cost of running it isn't really an issue. Dryers require a vent to the outside of the house to work, and these vents often get clogged up with clothing lint that can reduce your dryer's efficiency and possibly cause house fires.

First off, your ability to determine an unfamiliar word's meaning with very little context is really good! Regarding the freezer and ice maker, with the model shown, it makes the ice for you from start to finish. The unit is connected to a water line, which feeds both the water dispenser and the ice maker. It will fill an internal ice tray with water, freeze it, drop the ice into a designated container in the door of the freezer, then start the process over again. You can then dispense ice from the front side of the door without having to open the freezer or handle ice cube trays yourself. The fridge/freezer combo I have will also dispense a set volume of water with the touch of a button, so I can set the cup in the door, tell it to dispense whatever volume I want, then walk away to do something else if necessary. It also doesn't take nearly as long to dispense water as the one Lawrence has. Yes, we have front loading washers in the US, but I find a top loader to be more convenient for deep cleaning loads (i.e., letting them soak for long periods of time). While top loading washers use a bit more water than front loaders and can be difficult to get items out of if you're short, I still prefer this to the front loading models. Pro tip: a step stool or pair of tongs can assist in getting those hard to reach items. My mother has a front loading washer, and I think it smells a bit from water pooling in the door seal, and leaving a front loader open to dry out means the door can get in the way. Meanwhile, you can prop the lid open on a top loader, and it's not going to catch you on the shin when you walk past it. There's also the time saving convenience of loading the washer while it fills with water.

I’ve definitely seen full sized refrigerators in the UK in the videos of content creators I follow. Some in the countryside who have larger homes with larger kitchens have full sized refrigerators. Top load washers are the older style and are not energy efficient because they used a lot more water. As for the dehumidifier, my house had a mold issue when I bought it due to uncontrolled humidity in the home for several years (it was vacant for many years and not cared for). My basement floods a couple times a year which can cause humidity to rise up through the house. I have a dehumidifier in the basement that runs continuously to control the humidity down there, and one on the first floor that I use in the summer to keep the house at a safe humidity level to prevent mold. I think it would be beneficial for them to be used in Britain considering how much it rains there. Especially for people who live in old stone homes that have damp and mold issues as a result. Mold can be very dangerous to your health and can destroy a home.
@truckerwifeonabudget62952 ай бұрын
4:40 yes. On the dehumidifier, you definitely can feel it-at least where I live. Normally here in the SE US, the dehumidifier is built into the central Air conditioner that is plumbed into the house. Also, the humidifier takes the moisture out of the air, making your sweat more easily and quickly evaporate, cooling you better. There are top and side loading washing machines here. We bought a large stacking washer/dryer last year. We spent just under $2,000. It takes up half the space and can handle twice the load as my old set. No more laundromat for pillows, comforters and such. I can put ten pair of jeans in one load. We have a refrigerator with water and ice in the door. It connects to the water line and makes the ice automatically to fill the bin. There is also a water filter for the water. So it’s more than just getting cold water.

The speed of fill varies from fridge to fridge and it will depend on your house's water pressure. A top loader is superior to a front loader and you cannot change my mind on that. If you are mobility challenged or otherwise disabled, that may not be true. I can wash all of our washing in my washer/dryer. Sheets. Towels. Blankets. And they get dry even when it's raining or it's humid! Oh....and in the winter, a blanket fresh out of the dryer? *chef's kiss*. Yeah, AC, fans, and dehumidifiers make a huge difference. I wouldn't use AC if it didn't get so damn muggy in the peak summer months. When I can, I much prefer to cool it off in here with good cross ventilation and strategically placed fans. But once dew points hit the 60s or higher, the breeze just doesn't cut it.

Stink bugs have caused me to remove all the screens from my windows & put tape around them so nothing can get through. I then cut the screens up & duct-taped them to my a/c units' vents so nothing can get in through there, either. Because of stink bugs, I can't enjoy breezes anymore from inside the house.

I have a water dispenser in my fridge - you have to buy and replace the water filters every 6 months, around $20 each. There is a tiny water line that comes off of the main through the wall that attaches into the back of the refrigerator that most houses have now. And it is not difficult for a plumber to add one. So it is not only cold water, but safer than regular water from an unfiltered tap. Though we do also have water filters that can be installed to faucets here as well, not very common to see. In general, US water from the tap is mostly safe, but most pipes are very old - do I feel safe drinking from the tap? Not so much, I prefer filtered water. Even our gas stations have water filters attached to their soda fountains.
@rw76682 ай бұрын
If you have copper piping for the house’s potable water (which is fairly common in the USA), there shouldn’t be a problem. I had the kitchen sink filtering system removed because it took up too much space and installed instead a whole house water filtration system. Works extremely well. I keep glass carafes of water in the fridge and the water tastes great! Even though the fridge has a very small interior tap (with a separate filter), I never use it. When I lived and traveled in Germany many, many moons ago, the tap water was undrinkable. You certainly won’t get tap water in a German restaurant.

A person usually has to get a plumber to connect the water feature on the fridge door to the main line water pipe that gives water to the other faucets that give out running water in the kitchen.

Faucet tap water isn't always filtered/treated the same way. Varies differently town to town, let alone state to state. Filtered fridge water is cold and filtered, so it'll taste better. I don't have filtered water through my fridge, but does have water piped to the freezer to make ice cubes. I filter water through a filtered pitcher on my counter. Love my ancient top load water... so going strong. I only had issues getting laundry out when i was 8 months pregnant, and mostly because I'm about 5 feet tall😂. Dehumidifier in basement to stop mold/ mildew, corrosion on pipes... laundry is in basement too. Air purifier I only use when our seasonal allergies get really bad or cook/ burn food that won't air out. We each drink 1-2 cups of coffee a day. I like instant too, but we're loving a pod coffee maker right now.

Our refrigerator also has an ice maker and water dispenser with a filter. It doesn't take long at all to fill a glass of water with ours. The Fridge is connected to the water source in the house so ice and water are 'automatic'. Top load washing machines are common, (they aren't any more 'difficult' than front load, really) but both our tumble dryer and washer are front load. They are in a separate laundry (washing) room. We don't have to iron our clothes--the dryer has a 'wrinkle free' cycle. As long as we take the clothes out as soon as they're dried, they aren't wrinkled. That dryer is definitely something I don't want to live without--I hate ironing clothes.

The beauty of a top load machine is that if, after you have started the machine, you find you forgot one or two items. With a top loader you can stop the cycle and add the items. No so with a front loader.

People in a desert use swamp coolers to cool off. Basically, it is hot air moving across water, causing the water to evaporate and form a cooling mist in the air. People in a swamp laugh hysterically at the commercials from desert dwellers, who say, "This tiny unit cools the whole room! Just add water, and...' People in the swamp get cooler by using dehumidifiers. See, the thing is, when the humidity is at 90%, that's just short of ACTUAL RAINING. It's hot as blue blazes, and you're sweating, which is what your body does to cool off. Your sweat is SUPPOSED TO evaporate, and thus cool your skin. But when it's ALMOST RAINING IN YOUR ROOM, your sweat will not evaporate. It just sits there, feeling icky and salty and making you wonder "How would I taste?" and "Should I just lick up my sweat to replace the electrolytes I'm losing?" But, get yourself a dehumidifier in your room, and you can go indoors to cool off, because at last, your sweat will ACTUALLY EVAPORATE! BLISS! Of course, people who have dehumidifiers also USUALLY have air conditioners, so when you walk indoors out of the swamp, you feel FREEZING COLD almost instantly. Why? Well, you're already drenched with sweat from being outside, aren't you? And it FREEZES ON YOUR SKIN (or feels like it), as it almost instantly turns from water to humidity in the air around your body, then gets SUCKED into the dehumidifier to dry out. It seriiously feels like you're freezing, which is why you'll see Americans wearing coats in the summertime, as they go from building to building, so that they will be DRY when they arrive to the air conditioned building. And then, when you walk out of the air conditioned building, you feel as if you are being slapped all over with wet, hot sponges, filled with boiling water. Coats are also hot, but at least they protect you from the BOILING WATER on your skin. And then, there are the people in more temperate zones who use dehumidifiers for health reasons. Because apparently lungs don't like to be full of water? Who knew?

I'm from Colorado, but I have family in Lousianna, so I know about both extremes with regards to humidity. You described high humidity rather nicely, except that you forgot to mention that it also tends to come with mold. Low humidity is unpleasant in a different way. It makes your nose dry and crusty, and heavy breathing (i.e. while exercising) can cause a burning sensation in your nose and lungs. It also dampens your sense of smell, and can definitely cause bloody noses. The winter is the worst because heating cold, dry air turns it into warm, very dry air. Since there's only about 1-2 months in the summer that are actually hot, air conditioners in houses are rare here, but most public buildings will have them. Swamp coolers can be nice since it's a relief to breathe in a bit of humidity after being in the dry all the time.

Family in CO, LA, NC and Singapore. Thank God for dehumidifiers and swamp coolers in the proper place. Top loading washers with agitators are the best. Front loader washers just get the clothes damp and slap them around. Might as well go out to the creek and use rocks

We have had both front load and top load washers. I prefer top load because when laundry is done, you can leave the lid up and the inside dries out very nicely. Many people have a problem with stinky mold in front load washers because they never get the chance to dry out. When you buy a washer-dryer pair, they are sized to work together, so that when one load is finished washing, the dryer has dried the previous load and it is ready for the next wet load. You will love this: our washer holds 4.6 cubic feet of laundry. (Have fun calculating the conversion.)
@4potslite1692 ай бұрын
Larger washers mean the clothes rinse cleaner. You can reach in to the top loader without bending over and trying to get all the way to the back. Most of us do not have the room in our homes to hang everything and in our humid summers nothing dries very quickly…the clothes can in fact start to mildew and smell before they dry. In winter, where I live, everything would freeze if you tried to hang outdoors (if you even had a yard to put up a clothes line) BTW…clothes and blankets dried in the dryer come out soft and fluffy and wrinkles are only a problem if you leave them sit after the dryer cycle is finished. Everything comes out great!
@alaina59582 ай бұрын
We run a dehumidifier in our basement and it stops mildew build up… works very well. The water from the fridge comes from pipes ran to it and it’s ice cold. Also there must be something wrong with his, it shouldn’t take that long. Top loader washer are better in my opinion, you can open it and ad stuff to it after you start it and if it brakes down you can take the clothes out without flooding the room. Most clothes here come out of the dryer just fine. Unless you leave them in for days lol

The refrigerator is literally plumbed into the wall. Water comes into the fridge, and through a water filter, which you replace every few months. Then, that water goes up to the top, where it fills the ice cube tray, which then dumps out and refills and fills the ice bin with ice, so you have a lot of ice ready to go, at any time. EXCELLENT for parties! The water also runs down to the port where the ice is DISPENSED (or given out), and you can also choose to have cold water dispensed. Unlike the water from the faucet, it is FILTERED water, and it is also significantly colder than sink water, especially in the summertime in Texas, when the HOT water actually comes out cool, first, while the cold water comes out cool, and then turns hot. Go figure. You want cool water? You get it from the fridge, either from a dispenser or from water you have poured and placed in containers in the fridge, to cool.

9:20 There's an automatic ice maker in the freezer. A tube is installed to feed the ice maker and water dispenser from the house's tap water, usually running it through one or more filters depending on how fancy your fridge is. The ice maker works the same way as a commercial ice cube maker, just smaller. It fills a tray with water, waits a set time until it's certain the ice is finished freezing, then there's some mechanism to remove the ice cubes from the tray and dump them into a reservoir that feeds the ice dispenser. Some freezers that don't have dispensers still have ice cube makers, they usually just dump the ice into a bucket that sits on the shelf below the ice maker.

9:15 half the year, the 'cold water' from the tap is not really that cold; and when you want cold water after a hot summer day, you want it really really cold.... also, the law says tap water should be drinkable, but in practice that situation varies from one town to the next; those fridges at least have a water filter built in

A lot of people in the US with basements use dehumidifiers because basements are just damp. And there are giant industrial ones for if your house floods and you get a disaster remediation service. My partner’s apartment flooded in the past (idiot upstairs neighbor decided to take an ice bath in his tub and didn’t account for displacement) and they brought in this giant thing with a hose that you shoved down the sink drain for the water to go down and it sounded like an airplane. But it worked! No mold or peeling paint. Washers: top loaders are more efficient, clean clothing better, and are much less likely to leak water everywhere when the rubber seal goes bad. And from what I understand, they’re cheaper and easier to fix too. The only annoying thing is when the old ones didn’t balance clothes right and they sounded like they were going to take off and fly away.
