If they did a Sega Saturn mini I would want it to have some Japanese games since they had the better market of games. I don't want games like Tomb Raider and Daytona USA 🙄 And as for unreleased games, a playable yet unfinished build of Shenmue for the Saturn would be nice. Basically a demo of that would be nice. Or I would like it if they took what the indie scene is doing and take some of those fan translated Saturn games and put them on there such as Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Bulk Slash, and Grandia.

Hindsight is 20/20 but it feels like all of this would have been a non issue had 1. NEC/Hudson released the TurboGrafx-16 in at least the USA and Europe regions in early 1988 instead of 1989 and 2a. Never released the TG-16 Duo and instead retired/replaced the entire PC Engine TG-16 Platform for a Supergrafx Duo somehwere around 1991. 2b. Then actually make games for it.

I always find physical media in games interesting because looking at vinyl with music, and with film you got dvd or blu ray as a universal thing but with games there isn't a single platform that stands out that would be easier for games to go the way for vinyl like music, the closest we got really is the Dreamcast and the new games we get now for it

I've been interested in getting a Series X for "emulation" and backwards compatibility purposes; there are thousands of games released thru the Xbox' history that I have never played and seeing them in 4K would make the experience that more awesome. On the one hand gaymers complain about physical media/releases disappearing but then act like it's a completely insane proposition to still have your own physical media from years and years ago. They'll also buy things digitally and then act shocked when discs begin to disappear. YOU ARE THE PROBLEM! These hypocritical nerds.

Hey so one of the reasons that the hardware variants of the PC Engine are so incomprehensible all these years later is that they were caught in the middle of the partnership between NEC (who made the hardware) and Hudson Soft (who owned the HuCard format and developed the graphics processor), so NEC came out with the CD add on as soon as possible in both markets because they didn't have to pay royalties to Hudson on CD games that Hudson didn't develop. In that context, the SuperGrafx makes more sense if Hudson was pushing NEC for some kind of solution to the upgrade problem that kept the HuCard format. Ultimately the combination of RAM expansion cards and CDs won out as the long term solution to making bigger games on the platform. It's a bit like the 3DO situation with hardware you described in your video on that platform.

While it's true that a majority of the Dreamcast's best games have been re-released on other more accessible platforms, most of them are sub-par port jobs. Some of the worst offenders being the original Sonic Adventure (seriously, don't play DX: Director's Cut. There are several videos that document how bad of a port job it is compared to the original DC release) and Crazy Taxi (no analogue controls, original soundtrack is missing, etc.). They're more bearable with fan patches and mods, but they shouldn't have been botched to begin with. I'd love to see the Dreamcast GD-ROM versions of these games running on the DC mini via emulation instead of bad PC ports. It would be sweet if they could replicate the detachable VMU in the original controller as well, but that's a bit much to ask.

I think you're vastly overstating Xbox's effect on the market in light of their actual hardware sales. Xbox as it stands only effects the market because of their recent acquisitions scaring the shit out of Sony and Game Pass. But recent analysists have suggested that Game Pass and streaming services in general have flatlined so even that's debatable now Xbox isn't pushing hardware innovation because gamers don't care about pure horsepower as the Series X getting slaughtered in sales by not only the weaker PS5 and Switch but even its entry level counterpart the Series S show. And Sony isn't trying to compete with Halo, Gears and Forza but Mario, Splatoon and Zelda. Looking at gaming history overall only two hardware platforms are actually competitive with each other, the 3rd is just there. The 7800, Turbographix and Saturn all failed to make a significant impact in their respective generations and Microsoft themselves said the Xbox One failed to compete with Sony and Nintendo. The only times Xbox has been relevant are the 6th and 7th gen and in those cases everything was insignificant compared to the PS2 and Wii. Also have to laugh at the idea that Microsoft is keeping anyone honest when their current strategy is just Sony's classic buying of exclusivity on steroids. But they're keeping everything they bought multi-plat which makes you wonder why they bother even having a platform if almost everything they own is on PlayStation and Nintendo. And on the subject of physical media's decline I have to wonder if the flatling of subscription services and the resulting "cablfication" of them to combat the decline on top of the issues with digital rights that's supposedly causing a surge of piracy is going to eventually lead to a recreation of the home video market that first emerged under similar circumstances in the 80s? * Edited because one line might've unintentionally come off as hostile.

Sega made great games but there hardware was awful how they thought 100KB of memory would be enough for saves and dlc on a console going into the 2000s was a bizarre oversight. Even the Mega Drive that came out in 1988 had a 128KB memory cart for it's CD based game saves and the last gen Saturn had a 512KB memory card. Got to wonder what Sega were smoking at the time.

I'm still about the minis and I am patient. My range would be $175 to $250 (USD).

The only selling point for consoles for me personally is that it still has physical media available. I'm not buying a console without a disk drive. I might as well stick to PC exclusively in that case.

I love this video but it's important to remember that the Mega CD/Sega CD was not developed with the American or European markets in mind-- development started months after the American release of the Genesis and a year before the Super Famicom. Sega of Japan saw the CD add on as an ESSENTIAL maneuver to stay competitive with NEC's PC Engine CD add on in their weird, brief, and not well understood outside of Japan race to try and upend the Famicom. The Mega Drive was easily more powerful than the PC Engine, but it had launched outside the window of the Japanese economic boom of the late 80's and so NEC had the bigger install base of people who had bought "the new game system" in the late 80's when everyone already owned the Famicom. Sega thought, as they always did, that if they could just get their arcade tech into some games, in this case, Super Scaler they would have the upper hand-- and maybe getting some big new RPGs would help as well. In America, the strategy that had worked for Sega was to put the console on permanent fire sale to create an install base out of sheer force of will. Adding a 300 dollar boutique add on under such a business model was suicidal-- and trying to sell it on the wave of big RPGs and visual novels Japan was hoping for was also not viable. Given that, all they COULD sell it on was FMV games, especially given Sony ImageSoft's commitment to the machine.
