That is sweet! I’m guessing that the fine quality print is due to there being no ribbon between the type and the paper. I noticed the XKGB letters and immediately thought of 💩tin. 😝 Although I suspect once a KGB always a KGB. Go 🇺🇦!

Once again you've saved me a long weekend poring through the Selectric service manual to fix something that wasn't really that big of an issue but was still slowly driving me insane trying to track down. Thanks!

An easier way to do this is to lift up the black tap/lever on top of the font ball and loosen the screw underneath. Manually rotate the font ball with your fingers until the desired position is achieved. Re-tighten the screw and snap down the tab. Thanks for the video

We used to have little plastic strips with white out behind it that you could manually insert in front of the paper and just overtype the character. It was a little challenging because you'd have to find an unused part of the plastic strip, like the smaller one next to the match strip. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correction_paper

Unbelievable! That’s the problem I had on my 1974 Smith Corona Galaxie 12. I had to use a needle nose curved pliers to close the tip while my other hand lifted the spool. What dumb idea on smith corona’s part.

Mine had the opposite issue, where the bell worked but the right key stop didn't. That turned out to be the little arm reaching down to the margin stop (you can see it if you pause at 6:28 just above the 2 key.) It had gotten bent up so it wasn't engaging the key stop mechanism. Bent it back down and the right margin worked properly again.

I have an old electric smith corona 210 that my grandpa game me, and the belt is absolutely messed up. The machine works but it’s loud and freaks out sometimes. That and the belt holder shakes like crazy. I was wondering if rubber bands would be any good as a replacement, I’m just scared to try since I don’t want to break the machine. If you have any suggestions on what replacements I could use I would greatly appreciate it.
@phoenixtypewriter21368 күн бұрын
Shakes because the typewriter sat for 40 years and the belts are now out-of-round, Rubber bands won't work, I show the replacements and product number near the end of the video, did you watch ?
@Vicente_Fernandez8 күн бұрын
@@phoenixtypewriter2136 dang, sadly didn’t watch it all the way through 🫠🫠🫠 thanks. Ended up using a rubber band. Turns out it didn’t engage the spinning wheel enough to move the keys to the full position so they only came up half way. I make sure to look things over more thoroughly next time

No, been over 30 years since those rollers have been available If you have the roller, try re-inking with stamp pad ink or paymaster ink

Thank you for this. I'm a computer tech, but we will take a stab at fixing anything if the customer pays the diagnostic fee. I spent several hours trying to figure out how this thing is supposed to work, and why it wasn't, and after getting those cables off I had no clue how I was going to go about getting them both wound back around that thing. I should have searched the issue here in the 1st place, as I would have saved a ton of time had I seen this video 1st.

I have a 1975 Smith Corona Galaxie 12. I want to change the ribbon but the one that is in the machine has a center plastic that stays attached to the ribbon cradle in the typewriter. The surrounding ribbon I can remove. Can I remove that center smaller spool from the machine or do I need to order a special spool?
@phoenixtypewriter21369 күн бұрын
Spools should come off all the way leaving just a spindle shaft, The model with plastic spindle have tips that get warped and jam ribbon on But I can't see your typewriter, so just guessing that's the problem You can post pictures on the FB typewriter group, link in description

Hmm. Kind of surprised you didn't put any glue in there before you melted the reinforcing ring in there. We all know the propensity of parts to slip away from such things. Nice being able to fix it like that without pulling it, though. Well done!
@phoenixtypewriter213610 күн бұрын
Yea, I have or used to put glue in the split, pretty confident ring sunk deep enough is good, Like I said in video, also used to put epoxy over the meld, but not sure it adds to the strength. Only one I have seen fail was one I didn't get the ring melted in far enough, it lasted 5 yrs anyways.

Epoxy alone might not hold it well enough. One method would be to stick short pieces of wire into the plastic, then pour the epoxy over.
@babsstevetillett60014 күн бұрын
This method has proved to be a very handy thing to know. I’ve used it to repair knobs for typewriters and other plastic parts. Thanks for spreading the word about “melding “
@bwhog14 күн бұрын
The key here is to heat the metal sufficiently above the melting point of the plastic that it can sink into it without burning it and also without it going through, If you go too deep, you just cut a hole in the plastic with the ring and now you've made yourself a much bigger problem. So a single loop of a key ring is probably better. Thin, but still metal and enough to give extra support to the bond. Temperature, depending on the plastic, is probably 50 degrees F above the melting point. So that when you get it in there, it sets pretty quickly around the reinforcing ring. For many such things, clear epoxy may be the better choice. After all, if it breaks again, you can use a dental pick to remove the old epoxy and then try a new method.

So how does the roller get inked? Seems like it wouldn't store enough ink for one page. Is there a reservoir that feeds it? Also, how does inking actually work? Does it turn the next letter down to dab on the roller before it strikes, or is it just rolling ink on all the "petals" as they come around?
@KateSparkes14 күн бұрын
Thank you! I just picked this exact typewriter up at a thrift store. It’s filthy and the keys don’t come all the way up to hit the ink ribbon, but I’m hoping to at least do some proper cleaning and see what comes of it. This video is exactly what I needed!

This is a fascinating find. Thanks for the tip. In looking at my own '49 5 series Clipper I notice that the manual adjustment with the H 6-2 L lever attaches to a short spring, then a small plate, and from there to an arm attached to the universal bar. None of the settings on my machine effect any actual change because the entire assembly is loose from start to finish. Your machine in the video does much the same as I can see the spring attached to that lever hangs loose as you move from the L to the H settings. Given the screwdriver settings you're showing, I'm wondering if that Touch Selector is a vestigial appendage from the 4 Series days? I do notice another nearby unused arm on the universal bar with a hook-like end on it that the spring might have been attached to to provide actual tension. Unfortunately I only have a few 4 series machines to compare with (and their assemblies are dramatically different) and don't have any other 5 series machines to see what the proper connection setting for the manual touch selector should be. As far as I can tell, no one's done a proper video of the manual touch selector assembly on the 5 series machines, if in fact they ever worked at all. Perhaps something to add to the list of videos to produce the next time a 5 series Smith-Corona comes through.
