Well shoot I'm all caught up ... Yeah I too miss the faint rock station in the background was helping me build a kick butt playlist I call "Phoenix Typewriters"! Very cool Remington. So why did some have super long carriages? Was it to write in landscape or maybe there are long documents in landscape? Certificates maybe? So you can pop the platen out and use it for a rolling pin in the kitchen, look honey it works in the office AND in the kitchen! I wouldn't doubt it as they were doing some crazy match ups like that in the 40's and 50's. I saw a boot or shoe dryer that was also a toaster. Mmmmm, yummy lol toasty shoes and toast that taste like shoes!!! Mmmmm--hmmm just like Mom use to make!

Interestingly, this system of automatic reverse is very similar to the Royal 10 system, save for the fact that the the reverse mechanism is built into the spool on the Royal and into the typewriter on the Remington. For YEARS growing up, I wondered what the thing on the spool was all about but never knew. I wonder which one took the idea from the other. Seems like this difference is a way around a patent. Remington is the older company, but they made up-strike typewriters before making front strikes. Royal started out with front-strike designs (before Remington changed to them, IIRC) but had no automatic reverse.

The cloth ribbon that's wrapped around the main spring on mine is connected to the spindle but hangs loose ... I'm pretty sure this is the main reason it doesn't work, but have no idea where it's supposed to attach (?) any hints much appreciated, many thanks :)

Got it. THEN needed to go back to this to figure the ribbon, lol ... ended up fixing / replacing the draw band with a black shoelace and a picture hanger - LOVE these old machines !
