Great video thanks! The elephant in the room for me is that when we talk about propagation of phonons we imagine that on the right-hand side (cold), something is different than on the left (hot). There is a thermal energy propagating. But we use a plane-wave model where the phonon is completely delocalized. Is there a simple analogy to bring the two notions (particle/waves) together? Would a wavelet decomposition help? Or some other description?

Some updates are needed, I think. Einstein's model does the job for the optical phonons branch of the dispersion relation. For the acoustic branch, then yeah, you gonna need Debye.

Aaaaaahhhh!! I'm so torn! I am torn between Materials Physics (Solid State Physics) Solid State Chemistry, Physical Chemistry. This is really helping me sort it out but I swear for my entire life Ill be involved in all. Now to find the best PhD programs. Someone chime in. Who has gone all in and what are your thoughts??

All the formalism with translation by 2pi/a was messing with my head and I couldn't see how a random geometric unit cell contained all the answers. "Wavelengths shorter than the atomic spacing carry no physical meaning" (paraphasing) is what gave me the "Uh huh!" moment. Thank you!

Yea, I have to agree with others on all your videos. The talking is a bit too fast on SOME things...AND you're out of sync which makes the information useless unless you're using this as a refresher especially at this part 4:30 where you mention 'these atoms experience positive displacements and these atoms experience positive displacements." I think I get it, but that isn't the point. When you studied this, were you shown out of sync information? I don't think so...so why do you speed through this? Wasn't the purpose to teach and not to confuse? Also, show how you get results.
