I moved up in my company from a medical assistant to a registered nurse. The plan was to train me but my boss refused giving me a raise. On the day before I was to start training I emailed her with the pay range for RN’s in my area and asked For a raise. I got it. I had been told many times by my boss and hers that I was an asset to the company and a great employee but they were unwilling to show it with pay. I showed them that a fair wage was expected and I would have undoubtedly quit if it hadn’t been granted.

At the risk of sounding self righteous because I am not, I, like many of the people who have commented here had a lot of very negative and somewhat hideous things happen to me which I won't go into here, many of them or the result of them are still going on to an extent but I have learned to not get involved with the people related to them at least for the time being because I cannot change them not can I be responsible for them but I can stay away from them and not allow them to affect me until hopefully they manage to get their issues and problems sorted out. In all of that the only thing that saved me from going down the road to drug/alcohol/substance abuse to deal with it all (I did kind of fall down a bit with alcohol but couldn't go too far because I had others to care for) was my faith, has it been easy - absolutely not but focussing other people/family/friends etc, not on me or my problems just getting up doing everything I needed to do, work, day to day life, praying etc and looking to my faith in God and allowing him to take my problems and not trying to take them back has freed me and hopefully I will not go back down that rabbit hole - though in terms of time lines it was a short trip thankfully I came back.

I've started to really disagree with this guy, people who are abused as young children by parents who are supposed to look after them. They don't go to therapy because their lives are complicated.
