My husband likes to rough and tumble play with our daughter. She loves it and I can see the benefits. I never had that rough and tumble play and I think it would have helped me a lot as a kid.

When I was newly teaching in a school for teenage street kids, my boss encouraged me to go ahead and wrestle or spar with the kids. I remember when a boy jumped me and we were grappling, I told him, "careful, your head's right next to the corner of a table." After that he really did a good job accepting guidance regarding schoolwork and how to interact. Grappling done well builds intimacy, trust, and permeable boundaries.

I think I missed this as a a kid, I'm 26 now and I'm constantly yearning for combat. I have a younger brother but he's not interested in such things and I think he wouldn't be able to handle it, he'd probably become angry and not want to take regular part in it

There was a talk by Jordan Peterson about children, where he talked about children who are afraid because they can't make friends on the playground. He advised parents to go to the playground with the kids and tell them to just watch other kids to let go of their fear, and the next day tell them to walk a foot away from them to watch those kids - anyone know this video?

it also shows that bigger people are stronger than the child.. children always get hurt, even slightly.. it teaches them respect for their elders

i'm completely against violence, and i have been wanting to teach my future kids to avoid any types of violence at all costs. i didn't want them to learn what violence was at an early age either, because i was scared of my kids hurting each other and growing up to become monsters because they learned how to be violent at a young age. im realizing violence in children is kind of like sex. they don't know what is is, therefore they can't really do it unless something really bad happened to them and made them do it. i realize that letting your kids play fight is very important, and im going to keep that in mind. thank you so much.
@panokostouros76094 жыл бұрын
Yes, "rough and tumble" play is the precursor to intimate sexual play, which is why I believe adults are terrified of playing with kids. They recognize the parallels but can't distinguish between them, which leads to a false association between _molestation_ and _play_ . Now I'm not dismissing the presence of sexual predators, but it's still a useful thing to keep in mind with your own children or children close to you. I'd wager poor physical socialization is partly why teenagers are so eager to sleep around today, to "get it out of their systems", because they haven't been provided the necessary limits to physical interactions from a very young age and so they seek to learn them from each other sexually.

Avoid violence at all costs? What about when another kid is violent toward your kid? What about when the kid is an adult? What if the “cost” is your kid and his/her family and friends are hurt because your kid will never fight back? You mean well, but this is abusive. Teach assertion and proper boundaries.

There's nothing I enjoy more than wrestling with my 2 year old daughter. Her laughter makes me feel young again. I love knowing that she feels safe enough to continue... but I can also sense just the right amount of playful fear in every shriek when she runs away... We like to play monsters. lol Fuck I love her. Hug n' kiss n' wrestle those damn kids every chance you get... soon enough they'll be where you cannot chase them. :(

My godson parents don’t believe in play fighting, one time i picked him up & threw him on the bed. Kids usually love that & start to laugh, but instead he froze up & looked like he was about to cry. I honestly feel bad for him and his future, he isn’t going to know boundaries when he is playing with other kids. He is 4 btw

That is kinda scary to start off like that. Maybe play box with him first. Get him comfortable with the physical aspect, gradually he'll be open to the idea. I even do this with my son and he's a late teen. I'll play box with him, and gently tickle poke him to show where he is open to defend himself.

I dont know if I was played with much like this. I was a preemie and my parents first child. So they were pretty helicoptery. It doesnt help that my brother was born when I was 2 so I learned to be gentle instead. Now I'm scared to try things physically. I'm not sure if it's related but I also have very poor balance.

When you said helicoptery, I thought you meant that your parents would do wacky fun stunts like lift you in the air and spin you around :(

Thank you for sharing. My first child shares a similar background to you. And I also had my second child soon after, they are 21 months apart. And I can see the softness on my preemie. But I also try to toughen up with rough play and teaching to speak up for what they like and not like. You guys also share poor balance. Do you have cp by any chance?

Ive taken my son who is 6 to juititsu along side his same aged cousin. My son alway had lots of play fighting , his cousin didn't. My son is excelling and getting praise weekly from the coaches. His cousin doesnt even fight back and is basically a lifelike mannequin for the other kids to throw around. My son gets bashed up by bigger/older kids during sparring and loves it. his cousin cries as soon as he gets a bump as i dont think hes used to it. We are raising a competitive little man that can live with other men . My sister is raising a sweet soft little gentleman. Lets see how this works out.

Remember when Jordan Peterson's own mentor, colleague, friend & advocate of over 20 years, Bernard Schiff, finally attended Jordan's lectures and realized that Jordan's teachings were extremely dangerous because he announced conjecture as truth? Bernard has spoken about this, which you can easily Google if you don't believe me. This wasn't just some random man's account, it was a dear friend of Jordan's for half their lives up to that point. When Bernard told Jordan this, even Jordan agreed on countless occasions with him that he's misrepresenting personal opinion and bias as fact. Bernard has even said, "[Jordan] has done disservice to the professoriate." This video came up before I had a chance to click away after watching a fantastic video by Some Other News breaking down the many hypocrisies, dangers and shortcomings of Jordan. I understood this is a pro-Jordan page, but even still, you should watch the video and at least be open to why people critique Jordan and have many critiques to offer. I watch similar videos on political representatives I support and read articles/books/personal opinions/podcasts/etc calling out those I support simply because it's healthy to step outside the echo-chamber and because maybe you'll even learn something. I sure have and I acknowledge the many shortcomings of those I support..in fact, I've stopped supporting people I used to root for altogether based on what I've learned from multiple perspectives. I am no doubt prepared for my comment here to be deleted or to receive a plethora of comments berating me for daring to speak out against Jordan, but I still had to share this here in hopes that even one of you is simply just open to hearing feedback about this man.

Mr.Peterson I have a 6 year old that’s not seated well in his body. He was a stay home child that didn’t get much interaction with children. He missed that gap between 2 and 4 interaction with peers. I want to be a good father to my children. Please help. What can I do. I have a 2 year old that I won’t make that same mistake. I’m a 43 year old dad.

Okay, but what exactly do you say to a person who's screwed like that bedside that they are screwed? Sorry, I might be a little late to the party with this. But I grew up as the well-behaved yet shy kid adults adored, and kids kinda disliked. I rarely ever experienced rough play, and it is only now in my late 20s that i feel the consequences of that. Now I'm socially anxious, i don't like the company of other men, and I'm totally non-confrontational. For some reason im bisexual, so i have not remained depraved of sex, gay men love me, straight men have no interest in my company, and I'm mostly invisible to women. I have no idea how to approach them, I hate dancing, I have no interest in sports, and I'm socially awkward. I want to change, but I don't know how... I have just been to a wedding, and all of those inadequacies of mine resurfaced all at once. I didn't engage in dancing, I barely spoke to anyone but my family, and when the groom threw the garter, I did participate because SURPRUSE, SURPRISE I'm one of the single ones, all the guys danced around and pushed each other around playfully. I remember one pushing me and I just stood there.. I didn't dare push back ad I think he felt that and just ignored me... I feel so unprepared for all of this. I have no girlfriend, I have no friends and my life is pretty much a man-child like state. I hate it and all I'm hearing from you is that I'm done for because I didn't experience it in the right period of my childhood. Well, here I am... ready to end it all, my suicide note is on my computer... my therapist doesn't really help either, so What do I and so many like me do?
