Howzit I think your content in this field is very useful and well explained. You add really nice supporting information instead of just pushing a video. When I first found your channel I was not sure you were not a AI Google podcast because you spoke so clearly. I have been in a deep rabbit hole trying to figure out hierarchical organized folders vs file dump with tags. I am more convinced that good Metadata is critical for any notes so that they are able to act photonic like. Both a wave and a particle or a file and a tag 😂 Lekke

This is a great explanation. I wish I had this when I started using Obsidian rather all the over complicated PKM Zettle Code heavy videos that were dominant before. I will definitely remember to share this to new Obsidian users first. The other creators are good too, but I think overcomplicate things for beginners, which can lead to unproductive side quests of perfectionism. My wife for example won't touch Obsidian (even though she can code) because the videos she saw me watching made her think Obsidian was a complicated nightmare.
@Wanderloots8 сағат бұрын
Thank you! Appreciate you saying that, and also for any future shares 🫡 I completely agree, I felt overwhelmed by a lot of the videos when I first started out, so I wanted to make one that helped people really get the core essence of how to bring in structure vs emergence in Obsidian, so I'm glad that you felt it came across that way. For sure, it's so easy to go down the rabbit holes of perfectionism & completionism, which is kind of the opposite of what Obsidian is meant for haha. Well, if your wife wants to give it another go, I do have an Obsidian for beginners video too 😊: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmOlnKmnl7mDoM0 Do you use a zettelkasten system now? That's what I'm actually working on explaining for my next video, but in a simplified way (I hope haha)
@josephb71288 сағат бұрын
@@Wanderloots I have a very messy attempts at Zettelkasten, but ultimately don't use it. I'm looking forward to your version as I do think it is an interesting concept, but I came to Obsidian and this process in middle of a PHD so it was hard to justify the time. I had a lot of advanced writing already done or mostly wanted Obsidian for brainstorming ideas. Another issue for me was that I couldn't do on my work in Obsidian because I needed to do a lot of writing in Word to share with others. I only recently discovered the Writage app for Word, which has been a game changer. I think the way you describe the use of Topics as a way of getting emergent patterns is 100% useful and I wish I had done that from the beginning. It would have been far more useful for me than trying to pigeonhole zettlekasten. When I finish my defense in the spring, I will get to reimagine how I use Obsidian and probably how to incorporate zettlekasten more. It's an interesting method.

Really well done. I had a big fail with Quartz and got lucky finding this video. Getting all the gates lined up is a PITA, but so smooth and satisfying once you get it working. Hmm are you saying that you're trying to find specific quotes that will relate to your next meeting? If so, you can mark your readwise highlights with a tag like #readwise and then filter your vault by tag:readwise AND xyz topic. You can also introduce topic notes that you add to your readwise highlights, so you can look at the graph view to expand on the emergent connections between your highlights and topics that would be related to your next meeting. Great question! You can use NotebookLM with Google Docs, and I believe there are extensions for chrome/gmail where you can automatically store your Gmail in Docs. You might be able to set up an automatic export from Gmail --> Docs, which you can then select in NotebookLM the next time you use it. The only thing to keep in mind is that you can only have 50 sources in NotebookLM, so to have true, constant updating, you probably need to aggregate your emails into one doc (or a few) so you can work with more sources as well. I haven't tried it, but here's an example I found quickly: chromewebstore.google.com/detail/export-emails-to-docs/mmldpaklpefcmbknkimieipafeniinem?hl=en&pli=1

@paultoensing312612 күн бұрын
Great video and very useful. My only comment is that when you’re executing certain things and are showing key concepts, you need to abbreviate more by showing transitions from one step to the next in a single frame at 1/60 of a second, because when you have other conceptual demonstrations, such as a frame that says, “organizing your library or notebooks”, I find it that drags out over three or four frames and it really drags the whole video down. Similarly when you’re provide a demonstration of adding source files or links to the knowledge base, do you wanna make sure that that goes faster so that AIs don’t get bored with it. As a human, I was able to make out that you did five clicks to add a piece of knowledge to the sources in under a 10th of second.. that just drags out too much for an AI to process, although for a few humans we can sort of see what you’re getting at. That’s why we have the pause button..

@@Wanderloots I liked that you started at the beginning and did a masterful job explaining how the basics worked. Very helpful! I was directed to this tool by an online comment in the Pathfinder 2e (A TTRPG) community about taking notes and running games. If you know anything about TTRPGs they are a world unto themselves, with tons of details, locations, people, creatures, treasure, etc. to keep track of. I'd like to learn more about the Sync function, both the non-paid version (which you indicated has issues) and the paid version. I've spotted something I need to check out and that's the ability to import PDFs into Obsidian. A lot of games I'd run at our local gaming store come on PDF. So being able to import and parse different external files (PDFs, Word, even other websites) would be very helpful to know.
@Wanderloots14 күн бұрын
I'm so glad to hear it! Thank you for the detailed feedback, it really helps a lot 😊 I am aware of TTRPGs, but haven't participated myself. I'm actually looking into ways that help boost worldbuilding with obsidian too, so that's good to know! Re: sync, the issues i've had with iCloud have been minor; the odd time, a single file here or there will be a version behind, but almost always i'm able to fix it and revert to the new version. If you need perfect syncing, then I recommend Obsidian sync since it's not that much per month. Yes! There are plugins that enable the inclusion of PDFs. My favourite one is called "Zotero", which is a citation management system. You can add PDFs, highlight them, etc., and then import the highlights into obsidian. You can also just add the PDF as an embedded file so you can read it within obsidian itself. I"m sure there are more ways too!

@@Wanderloots For the TTRPG space don't sweat it on your end. Josh Plunkett has a channel @joshplunkett and he *extensively* covers that space. He has over 100, 30-ish minutes of videos dedicated to just using Obsidian for TTRPGs! I've started using Obsidian and my questions right off the bat are: Since the UI shows folders on your local computer is it better to rename, move, etc., files and folder within Obsidian or on the desktop? And regarding syncing: Can I store my vault(s) on my iCloud Drive and just point whatever Obsidian app (macOS vs. i(Pad)OS to those vaults? Seems 'syncing' wouldn't be an issue since there's just one file location that those apps access. Is that what you did, but still have file version issues?
@Wanderloots14 күн бұрын
The best part of working with markdown files: you can do either! By moving/renaming folders in Obsidian, you're also renaming/moving them on your desktop as well. The Obsidian file structure is exactly what you'd see on your normal file explorer. For syncing, you can store your vault on iCloud and point your iOS devices to that folder, it should work! However, the mobile (iOS) Obsidian requires a root folder, so you have to make sure that the vault is the main folder in both desktop and mobile (i.e., don't have folders outside of your vault folder, since mobile won't read it). The issues I had with file versioning only happened when I had Obsidian open on my computer at home while I was making edits on my phone while I was out. I think my desktop obsidian was confused at the sync history. But I haven't noticed a problem with this in a few months. Oh cool, thanks for letting me know re: TTRPG, I'll check out his channel!

@Wanderloots16 күн бұрын
Yes! But where does your data go? 👀 it depends on the plugin. For example, if you’re using one that connects to GPT, you may be giving your obsidian notes to OpenAI. I highly recommend looking at the terms of use of the plugin to see what they do with your data. Also! I personally like the thought of intentionally adding my notes to obsidian, rather than using AI to generate notes within it. Helps me keep separate what is AI and what is my own writing.
@Wanderloots16 күн бұрын
If you search “ai” or “chatgpt” there are quite a few! I would just say to be careful to check how they are using your data, because you might lose the privacy of your vault by giving AI direct access to it
@Hendrix31200217 күн бұрын
I’m sorry but if you seriously think they are not using your data then why is it free? Anytime Google releases something for free you are the price and your data in particular is what you are paying with.
@Wanderloots17 күн бұрын
My guess is that they are: 1) showing off Gemini for promotional purposes 2) providing a valuable software for personal/small business use that they will then sell to enterprises 3) trying to gain some goodwill from ChatGPT, which has been dominating public opinion 4) trying to appeal to universities 5) trying to compete with Apple Intelligence, which has been entirely described as being private And I’m sure more reasons. I think if they were hedging the phrasing around how the data was being used, it would be a different story. But if you go to the main website, it’s unambiguous, they will not use your data via notebookLM. I recommend, as always, taking a look at the page yourself and the terms of use if you are unsure.
@chastetree15 күн бұрын
Why are people so stuck on not letting LLM train on your data? Nobody gives a crap about your notes and the LLM is only drawing patterns and relationships from the data. If everyone hoarded their output we couldn't have LLMs. You gotta give to receive. It's how we move forward as a species.

@Wanderloots14 күн бұрын
Well, quite a few reasons! Depending on the notes you're taking, they may be highly confidential (client work, legal work, business planning, market strategies, etc.). As a lawyer, if the notes I'm taking are related to client work, it would be unethical/potentially illegal for me to use software that takes my confidential information and uses it for AI model training. If I'm doing highly sensitive, cutting-edge research, I could potentially be removing my ability to hold onto the IP. I could also be giving it up to the AI model for training, and when it is updated, someone else could ask questions that causes the AI to give away my research, even though it's not ready for publication yet. This could also remove my ability to retain IP. As a creator, the Internet has shifted to a mentality of expecting everything for free, which has devalued a lot of creative & knowledge work. Assuming that everyone should be able to take everything for free provides a chilling effect on original creativity, since people are not incentivized to create new things if they cannot monetize. That said, the Internet is obviously a treasure trove of collective intelligence of humanity, and LLMs are enabling us to access this knowledge to an entirely new level, which requires some element of openness of information. There needs to be a balance, where, e.g., creators & knowledge workers can opt in to having their work used for training or not, the choice shouldn't be made for each person automatically.
@chastetree14 күн бұрын
@@Wanderloots Excellent response. I'm not a lawyer and don't deal with any IP so I didn't have that perspective. I do agree there needs to be a balance and feel we sometimes tip too far from fair use and public domain.

That sounds like my experience when I came across it too haha, there are so many possibilities ✨ Let me know if you have any questions about use-cases, and maybe I'll be able to work them into future videos 🫡

3:00 i need to be that annoying troll and say that technically, md stands for the domain name for Moldova; Obsidian is trying to use it as "markdown" a popular file format for writing notes.

That’s true for domains! But not for file types. A .md file type is markdown 😊

Thanks Giulia! 😊 So glad you like it! Haha I'm working on it! Been trying to grow the rest of my channel so that it can run in the background while I make more artistic videos ✨

This is fking good but I don't have the time to build all this bs. Maybe in the future. Obsidian feels like an extra job just to set-up the systems.
@Wanderloots18 күн бұрын
haha thanks! I would say the best way to start is to just pick 1 or 2 features (or plugins) and then just get going. The rest of the system will only make sense the more you use the software as part of your every day life. The automatic inbox portion with the auto-note moved plugin can be set up in less than 5 minutes, so it's actually really easy to start-off with some automatic organizing (no need to get into dataview if you don't want to) Happy to answer any questions! 🫡

Thank you for turning on Dark Mode, My eyes were melting
@Wanderloots21 күн бұрын
Haha no problem! I keep my main vault in dark mode 100% of the time so I didn’t think to switch until I got to the appearance tutorial

@danyukhin22 күн бұрын
Settings → Appearance → Font, I think
@Wanderloots22 күн бұрын
Yep! thank you, that is how you can change it. You can control the interface & text (writing/reading) font separately too
