I’m a farmers son. Have shot, hunted and fished all my life. But now coming to the conclusion pheasant shooting is ethically questionable. 10 or 20 bird days alright, they might be consumed. 100+ bird days. They’re not being eaten. And we’re bringing millions of pheasants and partridge in to the countryside without a care for the ecological consequences. It just doesn’t sit well anymore. Interested to see who’s in a similar position.
@JonathanMMcGee2 күн бұрын
@@irishmiddle I believe it’s dependant on the shoot rather than taking a sweeping generalisation of the entire activity and community. Releasing pheasant or any game bird into a landscape in no doubt has more benefit than it does harm. Shoots have formed the landscapes here in the UK with hedging, borders around fields, cover crops, woodlands planted etc etc. Not only this but game shoots are one of the only sources that feed wild birds and reared game all season. Economically they have a greater net worth than most activities, more than Golf here in the UK! In many rural areas shooting and its associated activities form a vital part of seasonal income, there is yet no way of offsetting this. With regards to birds being consumed. I’ve yet to visit a shoot that doesn’t have a market for its game, be that human or pet consumption. Either way if the game is eaten I can’t see an issue. Although it’s harder than ever to get people to eat game it one of the healthiest meats around and you can guarantee it’s an as wild product. Thanks and stay tuned for more films.

I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I can’t say I’m convinced by your response, I think the industry and community needs to take a look At itself, but thanks all the same.

@@JonathanMMcGee it does look like a terrific shoot. extremely difficult. A question on game consumption though. "Wild food" is a bit of a stretch when poults are in some but, not all cases, shipped great distances to shoots. Even from France. Also, i think (pls correct me if needs be) that game farms use antibiotics to keep disease down in rearing pens. So in fact, bred game does not meet the standards of, say, an organically farmed chicken. I also think the sheer number of birds put down by shoots across the UK (which I believe outweighs the entire biomass of wild birds of all descriptions) is problematic. Whose insects are these birds eating in the warmer months? Facing up to these truths - which would be utterly unpalatable to great swathes of the population - is the first step to preserving this glorious sport, with the great social and economic benefits its brings.

Anyone can miss when they are being filmed.missing birds that they would normally knock out the sky.the more you miss the more tense you get and become self conscious of the filming taking your mind from the job.its easy to become self conscious of misses but you must relax and then focus on individual birds.there were some great drives on that shoot and some brilliant filming .thank you.

Ben is an amazing sportsman. I use to try watching his videos a few years ago and did take his advice on 2 3/8 chokes on both barrels, which was a winner 👍. Still use them today. Problem was in his old videos his accent was so heavy back then it was like trying to watch a Guy Ritchie movie without subtitles. So Im glad to see he has gone to a more clear and neutral way of speaking.

I have mixed feelings regarding Mr Husthwaite, but that comment is quite appropriate. The movement, the feeling and the technique can all be perfect, but you can still miss because you slightly misjudge the bird, be it lead or be it line. Quite right
