a funny part of the battle of tornio was that the division that conquered tornio ended up finding booze deposits in the city and getting drunk for days, ultimately ending up in them almost getting caught with their pants down.

7:56 the river shown here does not even exist. The lower parts of it resemble Kemijoki's course, yet the upper ones don't, as it crosses a watershed in your map. The correct river, Olhavanjoki, is way smaller, being only 29 kilometers long. You can't even find it on bigger, zoomed-out maps.

The govermnet of Finland and Germany werent close close, sure, but it was for example the government that didnt want to actually fight the germans until we were forced to. Also many high ranking ppl in military and government liked germany bc since we had been allies since out civil war, specifically with more right wing goverments. Also just before out surender to USSR we kinda asked germany to give is weapons, and they did so, once we promiced we wouldn't make a truce with ussr

i think you misrepresented the soviet demands. the soviet demand was for Karjala not Helsinki. its still a big deal (karjala was one of the most industrialized regions in Finland), i dont think it was necessary to pretend what they wanted was much more.

My grandmothers first husband died in the last days of war against Germany. It's wild to think that if he hadn't died I would have never been born. She later re-married and had 7 more children, one being my mother.

3:00 - This is incorrect. Finland participated in the war as a co belligerent of Germany, it was a joint operation, and Finland's aim was to re capture the land it had lost. The wording is abysmal, as it was not Finland starting a war.

2:37 As in any other video too, Finland's geopolitical situation is fully ignored. Take a look at the map in June 1941. Make sure you look at the whole Nordic and Baltic Sea region. Germany had occupied Norway and Denmark. Sweden did not want to participate in the upcoming war in any way. Finland had no land or sea route to other countries. They were completely surrounded by the Soviets and the Nazis, and they were well aware that their country was a about to become a battleground. As a free and democratic country Finland was more than willing to have a treaty with Great Britain and France *before* they had completely failed to help Poland or other countries or even themselves. Yes, the Finns were bitter for losing their second biggest city (Viipuri) and for having to evacuate over 10% of population elsewhere. But it is a huge oversimplification to say it was just about getting their land back. Many Finnish leaders did not believe in victory, not even in 1941 and certainly never later since the main objectives of Operation Barbarossa were not achieved in time. Despite Hitler's demands and threats Finland refused to cut the Murmansk railroad which was very vital to the whole Soviet Union. They also refused to bomb Leningrad. The Finnish government had a very careful approach in this matter. This was well known at the time. The Western Allies understood that Finland was in the worst possible situation and USA even maintained diplomatic relations to get them out of the war. The Finns were even so desperate that they suggested the UK and USA to make a landing in Lapland. This was naturally refused by them because Finland was not willing to surrender to the Soviet Union. Finland was allowed to keep its independence because they withdrew from the war at the right moment and drove the Germans away.

Maybe they were not bombing Leningrad, but they did participate in the blockade anyway, weren't they? And if they knew war would be lost... why didn't they offered peace in the same 1941? Did they hold this thought right to the 1944, when it really was already obvious? If they weren't grasping on any hopes of victory, wouldn't it be useful to offer peace when they were in position of power? They could offer return of occupied land and deblockation of Soviets second largest city.

Also, just checked-finns did capture part of Murmansk railroad in december. The soviets just rebuilt inaccessible parts further deep in their territory, so it was not cutted off for too long.
@scientifus
@scientifus 11 күн бұрын
Yes, the Finns did attacks to the railroad, but didn't aim to cut it permanently, even though they had the chance and power to try it. USA kept Finland well informed that it would be suicidal. Razing Leningrad was also not their objective, the frontline and original border was basically in the suburbs of Leningrad. Peace negotiations as early as in 1941 were impossible because it would mean immediate war against the Nazi Germany and an economic disaster. Finland didn't trust Russia, which was quite reasonable after the Winter War. Everyone knew the nazis and the soviets had divided the Eastern Europe in 1939 (Molotov-Ribbentrop-pact). In fact the nazis had already secretly planned to annex Finland at some point, and quite probably many finnish politicians suspected this destiny. The western allies were completely unable to help Finland at that moment.

"After the defeat of our army, Stalin lost his nerve" (Nikita Khrushchev, Liaison between Stalin and his generals). In 1944, all the nine (9)attempted breakthroughs failed - of one of them it says, "Red army failed to break through Finnish defences", and "some of the attackers managed to escape back to East". In one of the decisive battles (Tali/Ihantala), the Soviets lost 300 tanks in ONE DAY! Stalin gave up; the price was too high; also, he wanted to get to Berlin before the Allied; hence his coming to the negotiation table. Keeping in mind here; the orders to Red Army were very clear in 1944: "Brute and total occupation of Finland." "In Helsinki in a fortnight!" (Molotov). "In Helsinki by Stalin's birthday" - 18.12.1939 (Meretzikov). Alas! no Soviet boot trambled the streets Helsinki in 1939, not in 1944 (one of a few cities of Europe that was not overun by enemy forces). Ps. correction - Finland lost 25 000 dead in the Winter war, and 75 000 during the Continuation war.

My neighbour was from Finland, and was living there when the Ussr attacked. She saw her mother murdered by Soviet troops in cold blood. She was only about 10 years old at the time. It really messed her up. She passed away several years ago, but she was still very much screwed up over seeing that until she died. 😢
