Costa Rica was part of the Federal Republic, they only got fully independence in 1838. I think you used wikipedia has a source, but even in wikipedia it metions in one occasion 1821 and in other it mentions 1838. If you go to central america part you would see this sentence "Following full independence in 1838, Costa Rica had no regular trades routes established" i don't blame you, i know it's difficult to find sources on the history of central america in english, i speak spanish so it's easy for me. Chiapas was the only province lost.

Chiapas was an integral part of guatemala but wanted to remain part of mexico, so their was a disute until mexico pressureed them. (Fum fact: Guatemala left mexico bc it didn't want to be hamstrung by the newly formed liberal republic as opposed to the empire)

Costa Rica fought a civil war in 1823, the “War of Ochomogo” which was fought between Republicans who wanted costa rica independent and within the Republic of Central America against the Imperalists who wanted to stay in mexico, after a few hours of fighting and after 20 people were killed the imperalists lost and soon afterwords costa rica left the mexican empire.

@@epic_bear698 Different countries with different incomes, problems, and egos don't mix well. They may share language and regional history, but at the end of the day each one is really looking out for itself. Just look at other examples like Yugoslavia, Gran Colombia, or the EU today. It's just not a recipe for success. They can work together, sure. But as a single country, one or more countries would likely be paying more than they should or else be entirely ignored by the state. And that is before you mention the issues concerning rampant corruption which would only get worse if they are united because now criminals have a larger state appartus to take advantage of. Just look at Mexico. Countries like El Salvador would do best to cooperate, but not unite as a country, with their neighbors so they can all benefit from working together without risking their sovereignty. That way they have more options to deal with current or emerging issues and goals.

@JanusXAlvarenga I'd much rather have no military. Bloated budgets contribute to each country's corrupt military industrial complex. That alone is why CR would probably never join. That said, too much time has elapsed. They probably resembled each other closer over 100 years ago. But now, each has their own egos to stroke. Cultural attitudes they may not share anymore. And too may naunced differences. (Salvadorans never respected nature like Costa Ricans have) What binded the North and South after the American Civil War was their united stance against the crown despite their own differences. Then they had to repair and mend that after the war because each provided resources to the other. I don't think we would have that much success and unification in today's time where overpopulation is abundant and poverty is rampant in the region.
